Sparky took over Rhyl bargain store and has created something very special

More info The seaside town of Rhyl has its challenges and many critics but there are also green shoots of recovery to show things are changing for the better. There's no surer sign of this than on the corner of Wellington Road and Windsor Street. It was Bargain Corner - a fairly typical budget catalogue store people would find in any town facing struggles and where average incomes are low. But in 2023 it was taken on by music loving electrician Gary Longworth. He has spent £250,000 refurbishing it into the venue of his dreams with a bespoke PA system - creating Deutch's Bar, the first custom-built dedicated venue in Rhyl for live music and creative arts. Gary, originally from Ashton-under- Lyne, Manchester, but now resident in Rhyl, said: "I first came to Rhyl as a child and had very happy memories of the town. So when I was looking for a venue I thought 'This is the place'. "I wanted to bring something different to Rhyl: a space to encourage creative people in all areas — not just singers and musicians but artists, writers and poets, of all age groups - to meet, and collaborate." It's early days for Deutch's but already the Open Mic nights are busy with performers of all ages and musical styles. The live music gigs and jam sessions are equally popular as are the karaoke nights. Gary, a keen musician, often gets up on stage and joins in, while encouraging and advising those who are just starting out making music. Professional musicians are on every Saturday and there are one-off events planned including a Bistro reunion night on Saturday August 16, which will recreate the sounds of the much-missed West Parade nightclub. "These premises needed a total refurbishment to transform it into what it is today," Gary said. "It took 18 months of hard work to turn it into a top grade music venue. "I chose the location for its long narrow shape and high ceilings. It's great for acoustics while playing music. The gallery shape is also perfect for displaying my late dad's artwork - he was a keen amateur painter." The story behind the bar's unusual name is an interesting one. "Dad's nickname was 'Deutch' as he worked as a plasterer in Germany (Deutschland) for a while. He also loved art and when he passed away he left a lot of his own artwork behind," said Gary. "This whole project started with me wanting to do something with dad's paintings and memorabilia. Which is why I named the bar after him." His father John Longworth's paintings cover the walls and the display includes a letter from Yoko Ono thanking him for a portrait he did of John Lennon after his death. Gary proudly displays them both in the bar, along with many more of his father's artworks. "I hope I've done dad proud,' he added "I couldn't bear to see his pictures rotting away. It's amazing to think that, after wondering what to do with them all those years ago, they are now here on display in Rhyl where everyone can enjoy them - and of course, the music too." Coronation Street teases who attacked Gary - but it's not Nina or Summer

Coronation Street's latest episode confirmed Gary Windass was in a coma amid a brutal mystery attack, but amid Nina Lucas fearing she'd done something, is someone else to blame? Gary Windass' attack on Coronation Street will be hot topic as fans try to figure out what happened to him and who did the crime. But perhaps two people have been ruled out despite it being heavily hinted they are involved. Gary was revealed to be in a coma in hospital during Friday's episode of the ITV soap. ‌ Prior to now it was thought he'd been staying with his mother Anna Windass away from Weatherfield, but when he didn't return home his wife Maria Connor was concerned. Then on Friday Maria got a text message from 'Gary' stating he was fine and at a mate's house, and would be home soon. ‌ Of course new information has come to light though that could well suggest Gary has been in a coma for days, and therefore did not send that message. Well of course he didn't send the text, as by the end of the episode we saw him in hospital and unconscious. So whoever attacked Gary must have his phone, and is covering their tracks. New spoilers had teased a cover-up was underway, ahead of Maria reporting Gary as a missing person with the police in upcoming episodes. Something will make Maria's blood run cold, sending her to the police station in a bid to find her missing husband. Amid her concern, someone, or more than one person perhaps, knows where he is, and knows what has happened. As well as keeping the truth from Maria and Gary's loved ones, the mystery attacker, it's soon revealed, has told the hospital a fake name for Gary while also claiming to be his next of kin. The attacker is clearly trying to stop the truth from coming up, going to desperate lengths to cover their tracks. These scenes will be delved into in the coming weeks as the plot continues. But Friday's episode appeared to confirm that it was Gary who Nina Lucas and Summer Spellman had seen the night they were on drugs. ‌ The girls were high on LSD when something sent them racing to the café, screaming and crying. They soon revealed they'd witnessed something bad, torn over whether to tell the police. During Friday's episode Nina broke down to her uncle Roy Cropper, and eventually she explained everything to him and detective Kit Green. We learned that what Summer and Nina had seen was a man "lunging" at them, before Nina pushed him and ran in terror. She claimed that before they fled the man fell and hit his head. She told Roy there was blood and the man was not moving, but fearing for her safety she and Summer ran away and did not say anything. ‌ Now Nina is convinced someone is hurt and it's her fault, asking Kit if a body had been found or if someone was missing. As no one believed the incident happened Nina struggled, sure that something was going on. She told Roy she'd hurt someone and that she was determined to find out who. In that moment we saw Gary in hospital, with it alluding that Gary was the man Nina and Summer saw, and that perhaps Nina was the one who attacked him. ‌ But a couple of things clearly rule Nina and Summer out. The fact someone has been posing as Gary and messaging Maria, this cannot be Nina as she has no idea who the man is and if it even happened. She's also confessed to everything, struggling with that's happened too, so for her to send messages or cover up the crime doesn't make any sense, let alone posing as Gary's next of kin. The same goes for Summer, and neither of them seem to be aware of the link to Gary. ‌ She also doesn't seem to be aware the man she saw, Gary, is in hospital, yet the person who attacked him does know he's there and will likely visit him given the spoilers about what the attacker does to cover up their crime. It just wouldn't make sense for Nina to be desperate to work out who they are and tell the police, and then secretly know the truth - so who did attack Gary? Whoever it is must have his phone, and must know he was away from Weatherfield amid their cover story. So far fans have wondered if Gary was robbed or attacked on his way home, or if, given it likely happened around Monday's episode, someone at the party was involved. A theory suggests teenager Brody might be to blame after he fled the party, after Gary's run-in with his dad Mick. Viewers suggested Kit may be covering for Brody, as other fans wondered if Lauren Bolton attacked Gary thinking it was Joel Deering. A further theory suggested Debbie Webster may be to blame after her recent arrest.

A former Democratic staffer and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) official has been released on bond after recently being arrested and charged with abduction with the use of force, sexual battery, and assault and battery. In a press release that was published earlier this month, the City of Alexandria announced, 'The Alexandria Police Department (APD), in collaboration with the Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD), has arrested 35-year-old Jeffrey Gary, a resident of Fairfax County, in connection with assaulting a woman on Friday evening near the Braddock Metro Station.' According to the press release, Gary approached a female from behind at 9:41 p.m. on a Friday night before grabbing her, wrestling her to the ground, and trying to restrain her. 'The victim bravely resisted, shoved the suspect away, and ran to safety before calling 911,' the press release stated. 'No weapon was used in the assault.' ABC 13 News reported that prior to the incident at 9:41, Gary assaulted another woman who was with her four-year-old child at the Potomac Yard Metro station at 8:45 p.m. The City of Alexandria confirmed that Gary has been charged with one count of assault and battery, one count of sexual battery, and two counts of abduction with force. According to ALXnow, Gary worked as an assistant division chief for the FCC until he was arrested on June 1. In a statement to The Daily Caller, the FCC said, 'Upon hearing of this disturbing incident we took immediate action against this employee. His employment with the agency has been terminated.' READ MORE: Top Democrat senator suddenly hospitalized in DC The Daily Caller reported that prior to working for the FCC, Gary worked as a staff assistant for Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) in 2015 and as a law clerk for Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) in 2017 and 2018. Court records obtained by ALXnow show that the former Democrat staffer was released on four bonds totaling $14,000 on June 13. The outlet noted that Gary is currently expected to appear in court on July 7. Following Gary's release on bail, Alexandria Commonwealth Attorney Bryan Porter told ALXnow that the city 'disagrees' with his release. 'The Commonwealth disagrees with the bail decision and is appealing the matter to the Court of Appeals,' Porter said. 'The defendant is presumed to be innocent, and the fact that he has been charged should not be taken as evidence that he is guilty. Given that the matter is pending, the Commonwealth cannot make further comment about the case.' A picture of the former Democratic staffer has been shared on X, formerly Twitter.
