Netflix now streaming World War 2 film 'more captivating than Dunkirk'

Gary Oldman won an Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, with viewers now able to stream the critically-acclaimed biopic on Netflix A fresh arrival on Netflix UK is Darkest Hour, the World War 2 drama wherein Gary Oldman delivers an Oscar-winning portrayal of Winston Churchill. Previously taken off the platform, Netflix users can watch the Oscar-winning picture again as of July 2025. ‌ Helmed by Joe Wright, who directed the wartime romance Atonement, the story unfolds during one crucial month where Churchill considers negotiating peace with Hitler or continuing the fight. The wartime drama garnered nominations across the Academy Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and beyond. ‌ The movie boasts an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus states: "Darkest Hour is held together by Gary Oldman's electrifying performance, which brings Winston Churchill to life even when the movie's narrative falters." ‌ Acclaim for Oldman's turn was virtually unanimous, though critics were divided about the merits of the overall film. As The New Yorker put it: "How badly we need another Winston Churchill film is open to question. Nonetheless, Joe Wright's contribution to the genre is welcome, largely because of Gary Oldman in the leading role." "It's an amazing performance: the only star turn I've seen in which a famous actor visible in nearly every scene would be unrecognisable if we didn't know his name already," said The Financial Times. ‌ However, Metro praised Wright for bringing his "trademark flashes of visual aplomb" as a director, observing: "[He] captures the peril of Nazi invasion with thrilling immediacy, despite being almost entirely confined to the claustrophobic corridors of power." Reviewers also drew parallels with Dunkirk, with the Radio Times' Damon Wise calling Darkest Hour a "near-perfect companion piece" to that film. Darkest Hour plot summary ‌ The World War 2 drama focuses on a brief but pivotal moment in British history. Beginning in May 1940, the story opens as Neville Chamberlain is compelled to step down as prime minister. Churchill, unpopular even with fellow Conservatives, assumes the role of PM whilst Nazi troops push westward. Facing pressure to broker a peace deal with Germany, Churchill confronts a cabinet poised for mutiny. Despite this, Churchill launches Operation Dynamo, also known as the Dunkirk evacuation . The film concludes with Oldman delivering Churchill's iconic 'We shall fight on the beaches' address to the House of Commons that galvanised public support for the conflict. ‌ What audiences think of the film Darkest Hour boasts an 82% 'fresh' rating with Rotten Tomatoes vieweres. One person commented: "The film has it's flaws, but Gary Oldman is phenomenal in this." A Google user was moved to write: "Darkest Hour is so well crafted on a whole movie level start to finish and so well acted and again I got teared up a couple times last night after seeing DH again finally and that to me is a movie doing its job being powerful as it is!". The top Letterboxd review, with 800 likes, joked: "I want a cage match with Joe Wright and Tom Hooper [director of The King's Speech]." Drawing comparisons to Dunkirk, another said: "An electric chamber piece that couldn't more perfectly complement 'Dunkirk' if Christopher Nolan wrote it, 'Darkest Hour' is as rousing and ferocious as Winston Churchill was himself.' Meanwhile, over on the MoviePassClub subreddit, a cinema buff admitted: "I definitely enjoyed Darkest Hour more than Dunkirk, as Dunkirk did not make us care about any of its characters, other than wondering what the writers or director thought killing off the youngster in the boat accomplished for their story. Anyhow, a whole lot more context in the Churchill story than in the Dunkirk movie."

‘The Pitt': Here are its 13 Emmy nominations — and 3 big snubs

Emmy voters indeed fell into The Pitt. The HBO Max hit received 13 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actor for Noah are the categories the medical drama got into — and missed. The medical drama has been the breakout hit of the year since its January debut. It quickly shot up Gold Derby's Best Drama Series odds and was in second place by the time of nominations. It's nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus. More from Gold Derby 'Squid Game' Emmys shutout: Here are all the nominations it missed for Season 2 - including Lee Jung-jae and Choi Seung-hyun 'Hacks' receives 14 Emmy nominations - but has 3 surprising snubs Wyle was the last one called alphabetically, but he's been first in the odds since May, a month after Season 1 ended and about six weeks after his tour-de-force performance in the 13th episode. This is Wyle's sixth Emmy nomination and first in 26 years. He was nominated in Best Drama Supporting Actor from 1994-99 for ER. The other nominees are Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Gary Oldman, (Slow Horses),Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), and Adam Scott (Severance). The Pitt only fielded two supporting actor hopefuls, Patrick Ball (10th in the odds) and Gerran Howell (14th), but they were boxed out by the flood of White Lotus (Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, Sam Rockwell) and Severance men (Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro), and Paradise's James Marsden. Unlike supporting actor, The Pitt had seven supporting actress contenders, but only one got in: Katherine LaNasa, who was seventh in the odds. She faces four White Lotus women — Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Aimee Lou Wood, and Natasha Rothwell — in addition to Patricia Arquette (Severance), and Julianne Nicholson (Paradise). Shawn Hatosy, who was second in the odds, and Mackenzie Astin, who was fifth, had both hoped to land nominations in this category, but only Hatosy made the grade. He's up against Jeffrey Wright and Joe Pantoliano (The Last of Us), Scott Glenn (The White Lotus), Giancarlo Esposito (The Boys), and Forest Whitaker (Andor). This category was always going to be a long shot. Rebecca Tilney, who played the sister of Astin's character as the siblings faced their father's end-of-life care, had the best chance: she ranked in 10th place in the Gold Derby odds ahead of nominations. The nominees are Gwendoline Christie, Merritt Wever, and Jane Alexander (Severance); Kaitlyn Dever and Catherine O'Hara (The Last of Us); and Cherry Jones (The Handmaid's Tale). The Pitt took a minor risk submitting three episodes, but it paid off as two of those made the final cut: the pilot, "7:00 A.M.," directed by by executive producer John Wells; and the first of the superb mass casualty episodes, "6:00 P.M.," directed by Amanda Marsalis. It probably helps that directing gained a seventh slot this year. They'll face off against installments of Andor, Slow Horses, The White Lotus, and two Severance episodes. The Pitt also submitted three episodes in writing, a category that has six slots, with two getting nods: the pilot, "7:00 A.M.," written by creator and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill; and "2:00 P.M.," written by Joe Sachs, the show's medical consultant who also worked on ER. They'll compete against episodes of Andor, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus. The Pitt was nominated for contemporary makeup (non-prosthetic), prosthetic makup, sound editing, and sound mixing. Best of Gold Derby Everything to know about 'The Pitt' Season 2, including the departure of Tracy Ifeachor's Dr. Collins Everything to know about 'Too Much,' Lena Dunham's Netflix TV show starring Megan Stalter that's kinda, sorta 'based on a true story' Cristin Milioti, Amanda Seyfried, Michelle Williams, and the best of our Emmy Limited Series/Movie Actress interviews Click here to read the full article.
