Orioles Pick Up Minor-League Catcher from Yankees, Put Gary Sánchez on IL
Orioles Pick Up Minor-League Catcher from Yankees, Put Gary Sánchez on IL originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After seeing catcher Gary Sánchez leave Saturday's 9-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves, the Baltimore Orioles needed to make a move. The Orioles pulled off an inter-division trade with the New York Yankees on Sunday. Advertisement Baltimore picked up minor-league catcher Alex Jackson and immediately added him to their 40-man roster. In exchange, the Orioles will give New York international bonus pool space, plus either a player to be named or cash considerations. Sánchez has been one of the veterans that Baltimore hoped would help them battle for the top spot against the Yankees in the American League East Division. This season, though, has not been what the Orioles had hoped it would be coming out of spring training. Sánchez was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a sprained right knee. For some context on the Orioles' catching situation, beat writer Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun posted on X that of 12 catchers on the IL in MLB now, 33% of them play for the Orioles: Adley Rutschman, Sánchez, Maverick Handley and Chadwick Tromp. Advertisement Additionally, Weyrich also reported on Sunday that Baltimore added catcher David Bañuelos to their medical taxi squad. New Orioles catcher Alex Jackson has some MLB experience as he fills Sánchez's spot Jackson, 29, put together a slash line of .226/.308/.463 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 44 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, reported. Jackson has thrown out 26.3 percent (10-of-38) of stolen base attempts made on him. He was the No. 6 overall pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 2014 Draft, and has appeared in 124 MLB games for four different franchises. Sánchez left Saturday's 9-6 Orioles victory over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Atlanta with right knee pain. He's hitting .231 with five homers and 24 RBIs in 29 games this season. Advertisement In another move on Sunday, the Orioles moved infielder-outfielder Jorge Mateo to the 60-day Injured List. Mateo is recovering from a left hamstring strain. Baltimore played an early game on Sunday against the Braves, looking to record a sweep of their weekend series. Holliday's 2-Run Homer Helps Rogers Finally Beat Braves as Orioles Complete Sweep With 2-1 Win
Jackson Holliday's two-run homer gave Baltimore an early lead, and Trevor Rogers ended his career-spanning victory drought against Atlanta by giving up four hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the Orioles beat the Braves 2–1 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Rogers (2–0) struck out six and walked two. Seranthony Domínguez gave up a homer to Sean Murphy with one out in the ninth and then allowed a single to Ozzie Albies before closing it out for his second save. Rogers, who was acquired by Baltimore from Miami last July, had been 0–7 with a 5.57 ERA in nine career starts against Atlanta. Braves manager Brian Snitker held outfielders Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II and designated hitter Marcell Ozuna out of the starting lineup for the 11:35 a.m. start. The Braves (39–50) have lost four straight to fall a season-low 11 games under .500. Key moment: Holliday had four hits, including the third-inning homer off Grant Holmes (4–8) that barely cleared the brick wall in right field. Key stat: Gary Sánchez became the fourth Baltimore catcher lost to injury when he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right knee sprain. He joined Adley Rutschman (left oblique strain), Maverick Handley (concussion), and Chadwick Tromp (lower back strain) on the IL. The Orioles added depth at catcher by acquiring Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees for international signing bonus pool allocation and a player to be named or cash. Up next: Baltimore and Atlanta are off Monday. The Orioles host the slumping Yankees on Tuesday night with RHP Brandon Young (0–3, 7.02 ERA) scheduled to start. The Braves open a series at the Athletics on Tuesday night with rookie RHP Didier Fuentes (0–2, 9.00) on the mound.

Yankees Make Unexpected Trade Amid Latest Losing Streak
Yankees Make Unexpected Trade Amid Latest Losing Streak originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If a savior emerges in the coming weeks to rescue the New York Yankees' season, it won't be veteran catcher Alex Jackson. Advertisement The free-falling Yankees traded Jackson, a 29-year-old backstop currently at Triple-A, to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday morning. Baltimore sent international signing bonus pool money, and will later give the Yankees a player to be named later or cash considerations. Baltimore recently lost three catchers over two weeks. Jackson's arrival could mean a trade involving ex-Yankees All-Star Gary Sánchez is imminent. Jackson, the 2014 No. 6 pick of the Seattle Mariners, is a career .132 hitter with six home runs, 24 RBIs, and a .456 OPS in 340 MLB plate appearances. He batted .122 in 139 at-bats for the Tampa Bay Rays last year. New York Yankees catcher Alex JacksonDave Nelson-Imagn Images It's been more of the same thus far, with Jackson posting a .226 average, 10 homers, and 34 RBIs at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Advertisement The Jackson trade comes amid the Yankees' six-game losing streak and catcher Austin Wells' lingering hand injury. Wells is playing through a circulation issue in his left index finger, and the Yankees haven't shown any indication they'll place him on the injured list. Only weeks after holding a seven-game lead in the AL East, the Yankees have fallen to 48-41 and trail the Toronto Blue Jays by three games. The 39-49 Orioles are 7 1/2 games back in the Wild Card race. Orioles acquire Alex Jackson from Yankees after Gary Sánchez becomes their 4th catcher on IL
ATLANTA (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees on Sunday after Gary Sánchez became their fourth catcher on the injured list. Sánchez left Saturday night's game against Atlanta with right knee pain and an MRI revealed a sprain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez's recovery. Advertisement Baltimore, which has 14 players on the IL, sent the Yankees international signing bonus pool allocation and a player to be named or cash. Two-time All-Star Adley Rutschman has not played since June 19 because of a left oblique strain, Maverick Handley has been on the concussion IL since a collision at the plate with the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. on June 22 and Chadwick Tromp hasn't played since June 30 because of a lower back strain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez's recovery. Jacob Stallings, who replaced Sánchez in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Braves in 10 innings, and Jackson, who was with the team for Sunday's game in Atlanta, will form the restructured depth chart at catcher. Stallings' contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. Advertisement Mansolino said he is confident Jackson and Stallings, who started on Sunday, have the experience needed 'to quickly catch up and make themselves an asset.' Jackson, 29, hit .226 with 10 homers in 44 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He made his major league debut with Atlanta in 2019 and also has played for Miami and Milwaukee. 'Obviously you have a whole lot of time in the big leagues now with multiple teams,' Mansolino said, adding the Yankees are a 'very forward-thinking organization.' Infielder Jorge Mateo, who last played June 6 due to left elbow inflammation, was transferred to the 60-day IL to clear a roster spot for Jackson. ___ AP MLB: Charles Odum, The Associated Press
