Chennai-bound Air India flight returns to Mumbai after ‘burning smell' in cabin
A Chennai-bound Air India flight from Mumbai returned to its origin airport after a burning smell came from inside the cabin, the airline's spokesperson said on Saturday, confirming the return. The Mumbai to Chennai Air India AI639 flight made the precautionary air-return on June 27.(X/@Aviationa2z) The flight AI639 'safely' made the precautionary return to Mumbai airport on June 27. An Air India spokesperson said, 'The crew of flight AI639 operating from Mumbai to Chennai on Friday, 27 June 2025, made a precautionary air-return to Mumbai due to a burning smell in the cabin.' Our ground colleagues in Mumbai provided all necessary support to passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew remain top priority," the spokesperson added. In another separate incident, a non-specific security alert was detected on one of Air India's aircraft on Friday. The airline's spokesperson said that following security procedures, the aircraft was cleared for the next flight. "A non-specific security alert was detected on one of our aircraft. Standard security procedures were duly carried out, and the aircraft has been cleared for the next flight. Air India accords top priority to the safety and security of its passengers and crew," the spokesperson said. The flight, an Airbus A320 aircraft, was scheduled to depart at 10:40 am but took off after a delay of over 20 minutes, at 11:04 am. According to Flighradar24 website, the flight was expected to land in Jammu at 12:05 pm, instead was diverted back to the national capital. An Air India Express spokesperson confirmed the development and said, "An alternative aircraft was arranged to operate our Delhi-Jammu flight after the original aircraft returned to Delhi due to a technical issue. We regret the inconvenience caused." Of the deceased, 241 were on board the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight, while the remaining 29 were those present on the ground. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is currently investigating the tragic plane crash.

Tata Sons invested Rs 3,224.82 crore, and Singapore Airlines put in Rs 6,333.18 crore in Air India, taking the total fund infusion to Rs 9,558 crore in the financial year ended March 2025. 'Pursuant to the merger of Vistara with Air India in November 2024, the shareholders have together infused fresh capital of over Rs 9,500 crore in the fiscal year 2024-25. The said infusion is to meet the company's requirement towards capital expenditure, working capital and growth initiatives,' the Air India spokesperson said in a statement to PTI. Tata Sons Investment In Air India In March this year, Tata Sons pumped in Rs 3,224.82 crore, and Singapore Airlines invested Rs 1,080.68 crore in Air India, according to regulatory filings accessed by business intelligence platform Tofler. Through the preferential allotment route, Tata Sons was issued little over 523 crore equity shares and Singapore Airlines was allotted little more than 175 crore equity shares at a price of Rs 6.1632 apiece, the filings showed. The equity shares, having a face value of Rs 4 apiece, were issued with a premium of Rs 2.1632 per equity share. They were allotted on March 20. For the nine months ended December 31, 2024, Air India Group's loss before exceptional items stood at Rs 8,033.1 crore while revenues were Rs 56,366.8 crore, as per the provisional figures mentioned in the filings. Currently, Air India is grappling with the fallout of the fatal crash of its London Gatwick-bound Boeing 787-8 aircraft soon after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12. DNA tests identify 247 victims of Ahmedabad plane crash
A total of 247 victims of the horrific June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash have been identified through DNA tests so far and 232 bodies have been handed over to kin, officials said on Saturday. The Gatwick-bound Air India AI171 aircraft crashed into a medical college hostel complex in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar on June 12.(Bloomberg) The London-bound aircraft crashed into a hostel complex in Meghaninagar moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 pm that day, killing 270 persons, including 241 on board. One passenger survived. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition as the aircraft burst into flames or damaged on impact. "Till Saturday evening, 247 DNA samples have matched. Relatives of these deceased were contacted. So far, mortal remains of 232 victims have been handed over to families. The process is continuing," Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said. The 247 victims who have been identified comprise 187 Indians, 52 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals and a Canadian, said Joshi. Of the 187 Indians, a total of 175 were on board the ill-fated aircraft, he said, adding they belong to areas in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Diu and Nagaland. The state government had earlier stated that samples of 250 victims, including persons on board the ill-fated flight as well as those killed on the ground, were collected for identification.
