Assam governor honours innovators, artists, educators with excellence awards
Guwahati: Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday presented Governor Assam Award for Excellence 2025 in different categories at a function held at Raj Bhavan here in the presence of chief justice of Gauhati high court justice Ashutosh Kumar and speaker of state legislative assembly, Biswajit Daimary. The governor presented Governor Assam for Excellence in Science, Engineering, Medicine and Environment to Bapan Das, an entrepreneur who promoted antibiotic-free poultry farming. The governor presented the Award for Excellence for Social Work and Public Affairs to assistant professor at Dibrugarh University, Amar Upadhyaya, for his initiatives like plantation drives, blood donations camps, campaigns on education, digital literacy, women empowerment, among others. The award in the field of literature and education has been given to former head of the Assamese department in Gauhati University, Nagen Thakur posthumously in recognition to his role in Assamese literature. The award in the field of art and culture has been given to Umananda Dowerah for his role as a curator and archivist of old Assamese gramophone records who established a gramophone records museum at Moran in Dibrugarh district. The award for trade, industry and commerce was given to Abhinash Hazarika of Kakojan Kamar, Jorhat district in recognition to his role as an educator and professional trainer. In the field of sports, the award was conferred on Debashish Roy, a footballer who has brought laurels to the state through his achievements.

Mobile passport seva van service launched in Northeast
Guwahati/Kohima: As part of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) program, 'Passport Seva Aapke Dwar', a Passport Seva Mobile Van Service was launched for the northeastern region to make the services more accessible to citizens in remote areas, officials said on Monday. A Nagaland government official said that Joint Secretary for the Passport Seva Project and Chief Passport Officer at the MEA, K.J. Srinivasa, launched the Passport Seva Mobile Van Service at Assam's Gauhati University on Saturday. The official said that the initiative is part of the MEA's ongoing 'Passport Seva Aapke Dwar' program, aimed at extending passport services to far-flung rural and remote locations in the northeastern region. The newly-launched mobile van service would be deployed across remote areas in the region, allowing citizens to submit their passport applications conveniently. This service is set to ensure the last-mile delivery of passports and related services, the official said. Currently, there are six Passport Seva Kendras and 19 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras operating across six northeastern states excluding Tripura, under the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Guwahati, while Tripura has a Passport Seva Kendra in Agartala. Joint Secretary Srinivasa highlighted that the mobile van is a 'one-stop shop' where applicants can complete all necessary procedures for passport application submission. He also noted that one mobile van has been provided to each of the 37 RPOs across the country, with plans to increase the number of vans in the future. 'This initiative is a testament to the Ministry of External Affairs' commitment to improving accessibility, efficiency, and user-friendliness of passport services,' Srinivasa had said and added, 'We are dedicated to reaching every citizen, especially those in the most remote areas.' The launch event was attended by senior officials from the RPO Guwahati, TCS, and Gauhati University. The new service is seen as a significant step in providing better access to passport services for citizens living in hard-to-reach areas. During his visit, Srinivasa also met with key stakeholders, including Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh, Additional DGP, Hiren Chandra Nath and Chief Postmaster General (CPMG), Colonel. Over 40k applications for 4.5k PG seats in GU & affiliated colleges
Guwahati: A rush for admission to Gauhati University (GU) and its affiliated colleges for postgraduate (PG) courses was witnessed this year, with the number of applications crossing the 40,000 mark. GU authorities on Saturday said this year, 15,000 students submitted 42,000 applications, a significant rise from last year's 28,000 applications, for admission in 50 subjects in PG. The total number of seats in PG courses, distributed in GU and its affiliated colleges, is around 4,500. While this trend is considered an encouraging sign for the premier public university of the state, it also exposes the dearth of an adequate number of seats in PG, with many of the qualified applicants being GU pass outs. Officials said this also highlights the need for students to prioritise other skill-based or professional courses that are available in Assam and under GU. However, the dearth of seats to accommodate the qualified graduates is a phenomenon witnessed across different universities in the country. GU looks to integrate northeastern languages into digital ecosystems
Guwahati: Regional languages of the northeast are all set to get integrated into a modern digital ecosystems at Gauhati University. The initiative aims to enable computers to process and understand these languages through parts of speech (PoS) tagging that involves assigning grammatical labels, such as nouns, verbs, or adjectives to words. A three-day-long national workshop on PoS tagsets for northeastern languages, organised by the IT department in collaboration with the university's Centre for Research and Development in Digital and Endangered Local Languages (CRD-DELL), was inaugurated on Thursday by state eductaion minister Ranoj Pegu. "From counting on fingers to digitalising everything, we've moved from ancient practices to a digital era, embracing AI and technology for a transformative future," Pegu said at the event. "We're proud to organise this workshop, which will help preserve and promote our region's rich languages through technology, ensuring they thrive in the digital age," Vice chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta said. "This workshop marks the culmination of a nationally significant effort for northeastern languages and seeks to finalise PoS tagsets, which are basically sets of grammatical categories for 12 languages of the region — Assamese, Bodo, Manipuri, Khasi, Garo, Mizo, Rabha, Karbi and others — thus ensuring their proper representation in AI, the digital world, and Natural Language Processing frameworks," said Shikhar Kumar Sarma, dean of the university's faculty of technology.
