Whitecaps captain Ryan Gauld doesn't want to rush return from injury
VANCOUVER – Being back on the pitch doing some light training is a step forward for Ryan Gauld, but the Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder isn't rushing his return to playing. The 29-year-old from Aberdeen, Scotland, has been sidelined since March 8 with a knee capsule sprain. He was greeted with cheers from some of his teammates when he stepped on the field for a practice this week. 'It's nice to have the boots back on, be outside,' said Gauld. 'I still got a long ways to go, but it's a step forward.' Gauld was hurt in a March 8 game against CF Montreal. His recovery has been slower than expected and he doesn't want to hurry his return. 'I've got in my head how I hope things go, what it looks like, but there's no point getting too stressed on it,' said the Whitecaps captain who had a career-high 17 goals and led the team with 16 assists in 37 starts and 41 appearances across all competitions last season. 'I've got a timeline in my head but I don't want to get ahead of myself. I've got to make sure I come back at 100 per cent and don't suffer any more setbacks.' Two players who will be in the lineup Saturday when the Whitecaps visit the Colorado Rapids in a Major League Soccer match are midfielder Sebastain Berhalter and forward Brian White. The two MLS all-stars had been playing with the United States at the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. 'It's great just seeing the guys again and being back in this environment,' said Berhalter. 'I realized how much I love playing with these guys.' The Whitecaps (11-4-5) and Rapids (7-10-5) are both looking to shake themselves out of a losing skid. The Whitecaps head into the weekend second in the MLS Western Conference with 38 points but are 2-3-1 in their last five league games. Vancouver needed a goal in the 90th minute Wednesday night to beat Winnipeg-based Canadian Premier League side Valour 2-1 to win their Telus Canadian Championship quarterfinal. Colorado sits 10th in the West, tied with two other teams with 26 points. The Rapids are 1-5-1 in the last seven games and have been held scoreless four times in that stretch. Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sorensen said playing at altitude and expected heat will be a challenge for his team. 'The conditions will be a little different than we are used to,' he said. 'Colorado is a good team, they have some good players that can change the game on their own. 'We have to be ready for whatever faces us.' The Whitecaps play their next three games on the road. After Saturday they travel to Houston on Wednesday, then San Diego July 19. 'It's a tough stretch of away games against good teams,' said White. 'Everyone is going to be locked in, switched on. Hopefully you can come away with as many points as possible.' Sorensen said having Berhalter and White back in the lineup will make a difference for team chemistry. 'It's been a little bit frustrating because we haven't had them the entire time,' he said. As for when Gauld might return, Sorensen urged patience. 'It's not important for me when he's back, it's important for me how he's back,' he said. 'It's very important he has gained the strength he needs to play. It very important that he comes back strong.' White said it was good to see his friend practising. 'It's been difficult not being able to have him out here,' said White, who leads the Whitecaps with 15 goals in all competitions. Wednesday he continued to work in the gym. The day he steps on to the pitch can't come soon enough. The 'Caps are back in sunny L.A. Friday to take on L.A. Galaxy. They've got Jayden Nelson back from international duty … but now Andres Cubas is out. So is Ali Ahmed, who suffered an ankle injury on Canada duty. Ballater residents 'dumbfounded' by slow response to fire
Emergency services were called out to a blaze at a property in Swann Place on Saturday afternoon, where two homes were destroyed and a third was damaged. Terry Gauld, who was evacuated from his home in the area, told The National that 'everyone was dumbfounded' by how long it took fire crews to attend the scene. READ MORE: Firefighters tackling wildfires in Highlands for third day He said 'without a doubt, had there been a quicker response' only one of the properties would have been fully engulfed by flames. It took responders nearly six hours to extinguish the fire after they arrived. Ballater fire services were busy tackling a wildfire in the Highlands, meaning Swann Place residents had to rely on Aberdeen-based fire crews based over an hour away. 'The whole of Deeside was left without cover,' Gauld said, and explained that whilst there were a few community firefighters on the scene, there was 'nothing they could do' since their equipment was in use elsewhere. 'I could see the frustration on their faces,' he added. Four other homes were evacuated due to the thick plumes of smoke from the fire, and nearby residents were warned to keep their doors and windows closed. READ MORE: Wildfire blazes overnight at Moray wind farm Guald was one of the Swann Place occupants told to leave the area and he told The National that there was oil burning all down the road due to a tank in one of the destroyed properties exploding. He was able to return to his undamaged house around 8pm, though he was left without power until well after midnight. There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire. According to reports from The Press and Journal, a police inquiry into the cause of the blaze is currently ongoing.

VANCOUVER — Ryan Gauld didn't expect to be the Vancouver Whitecaps' biggest cheerleader this season. The Scottish attacking midfielder has been the team's top playmaker since he arrived in Vancouver in 2021, and put up 10 goals and 15 assists in Major League Soccer play last season. He's been limited to just three league games this year, though, after going down with a knee injury on March 8 — and when he'll rejoin the team remains unclear. His absence hasn't slowed the 'Caps. Vancouver (9-1-4) heads into Wednesday's matchup with Minnesota United (7-3-5) riding a 14-game unbeaten streak (7-0-7) across all competitions. The game will be a tune-up for a Whitecaps side that's set to play one of the biggest games of the club's history on Sunday when Vancouver meets LIGA MX club Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions Cup final in Mexico City. Missing big games — including a pair of Champions Cup clashes against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami — hasn't been easy, Gauld admitted. "I think at any point it's tough to be injured, but even more so when we're winning a lot of games," he said. "It does make it hard for myself, because you want to be involved. But it also makes it easier with everyone in good spirits … Hopefully I'm back soon, but until I am, I hope the winning continues." Gauld likes what he's seen from his teammates so far this year. The 'Caps sit atop the MLS standings and hold a four-point cushion for No. 1 spot in the Western Conference. Last month's game between the two clubs saw several players separated by officials after Minnesota's Joseph Rosales allegedly hurled racially insensitive remarks at Vancouver's Emmanuel Sabbi, who is Black. Rosales was later suspended three games for violating the league's non-discrimination policy. Emotions will be high heading into Wednesday's rematch, Sabbi said. "It's unacceptable the comments that he made. And we just look to get past it as humans," he said. "We've talked about keeping a cool head. And that's what we need to do for this game, myself included." Sorensen said he may also issue a reminder to his players ahead of kickoff, but that it "shouldn't be a thing that fills the room too much." Sabbi added that Rosales has not reached out or apologized for the incident. It's surprising that Black athletes still have to deal with these situations, he said.
