Over 140 suspects arrested during Ekurhuleni crime crackdown led by SAPS In an ongoing effort to address serious and violent crimes, SAPS members and other law enforcement agencies attached to the Ekurhuleni District conducted extensive operations from the afternoon of July 5 through to the morning of July 6. The operations included stop-and-search activities, vehicle checkpoints, tavern visits and roadblocks. As a result, four illegal liquor outlets were closed. During suspect-tracing operations conducted by detectives on July 5 across various policing precincts in Ekurhuleni, 142 suspects were arrested. Additional arrests were made during Operation Shanela, which was conducted across Ekurhuleni policing precincts and included SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, CPF members, community patrollers, crime prevention wardens, and other law enforcement agencies. In one incident in Norkem Park, police conducting a stop-and-search operation on Isimu Street in Birch Acres stopped a silver Suzuki Swift. Officers found the driver in possession of a Bronwyn firearm with ammunition and without a licence. The suspect was arrested and detained at Norkem Park Police Station. A two-day intensive Operation Shanela, carried out by police in the Sedibeng District in collaboration with Gauteng Traffic, Emfuleni Traffic, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Community Policing Forum, the Youth Crime Desk Programme, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Community Safety, and other law enforcement agencies, has resulted in the arrest of 137 suspects. The operation kicked off with a suspect tracing initiative, during which detectives apprehended 117 wanted individuals for a range of serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm , common assault, rape, house robbery, carjacking, housebreaking, theft, business burglary, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of stolen property, among others. On 26 June, multidisciplinary teams deployed across the district left no stone unturned, conducting a stringent roadblock along Moshoeshoe Road to ensure full compliance with road traffic regulations. Motorists found violating the law were issued hefty fines on the spot. The roadblock was led by Sedibeng District Commissioner, Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, accompanied by Sebokeng SAPS Station Commander, Brigadier Thembekile Kubone. Reporting on the success of the operation, police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane stated: 'We arrested 14 illegal immigrants, one suspect for possession of drugs, and another for possession of an unlicensed firearm. Additionally, two illegal shebeens were closed down, and 10 AARTO fines amounting to R5,000 were issued.' Sergeant Mokhachane also confirmed that 750 individuals were searched, 360 vehicles were inspected withc12 of them undergoing further testing, and 14 identified premises were raided. 'Malls, ATMs, spaza shops, taxi ranks, and second-hand goods stores were visited, and one stolen vehicle was recovered,' she added. An Imbizo was held in Kanana, Sector 2, Sebokeng, to address community concerns about crime in the area. Key issues raised included poor visibility due to non-functioning street lights and the need for quicker police response times. Major General Mukwevho extended heartfelt thanks to all stakeholders involved in the operation, commending their dedication and teamwork. She also urged officers to exercise patience in their duties: 'Patience is a virtue. Being able to wait calmly and not get upset easily is a valuable and admirable quality. Crime operation nets almost 300 suspects.

Police have been busy with crime clampdown operations over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of almost 300 suspects in Atteridgeville and Erasmia. The operation dubbed Shanela was conducted in coordination with key priority structures such as the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, who led the operation with the Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic and Tshwane Metro Police departments. According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, 290 suspects were arrested for various offences. Wanted individuals were apprehended, visible policing was enhanced through the deployment of additional resources and officers, and liquor regulations were enforced in the targeted areas. 'A roadblock was established in Atteridgeville, while two operational teams conducted compliance raids and law enforcement operations across the two precincts.' He said that as a result, 16 undocumented individuals were detained and are currently awaiting legal processing for deportation. Van Dyk said Tshwane detectives arrested 235 suspects for various offences, including gender-based violence (77), murder (1), attempted murder (2), armed robbery (3), assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (31) and rape (5). He said several premises and establishments were inspected, leading to arrests for possession of drugs and shut down of liquor establishments for non-compliance. 'Twenty-four identified premises and crime hotspots were searched and patrolled, leading to one arrest for drug possession and the confiscation of two sachets of crystal meth. Four liquor establishments were shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act, and alcohol was confiscated. Eight persons were arrested and fined for illegal gambling. Van Dyk said one individual was arrested and fined for public drinking, and 22 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. 'Sixteen Aarto infringement notices amounting to R15 750 for violations of the Road Traffic Act were issued as a result of traffic enforcement efforts.' He said a total of 1 101 individuals and 552 vehicles were searched.
