Recently, Gavaskar's celebration when Rishabh Pant scored a hundred in the second innings of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, won the hearts of cricket fans. Gavaskar wanted to see Pant pulling off his trademark somersault celebration. Pant, who scored a hundred in the first innings as well, finished on the losing team as England chased down a 371-run target with five wickets to spare.

However, head coach Gautam Gambhir quickly turned down the suggestion, claiming they were more concerned about his workload. "I think for us, managing his workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket going forward, and we know what he brings to the table as well. So, before he came to the tour, it was already decided that he was going to play three Test matches. But let's see how his body turns out," Gambhir told reporters in the post-match press conference. According to a report in the Indian Express, Bumrah is likely to miss the 2nd Test against England, starting July 2 in Birmingham. Before the team's departure to England, Gambhir had confirmed that Bumrah will miss two of the five Tests due to a workload issue. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri warned the Indian camp to think twice before resting Bumrah in the second Test in Birmingham. "If he (Bumrah) was looking at a rest, you may have to think twice. If you don't have him and then go 2-0 down, it could be an uphill task," Shastri said on Sky Sports.

So, you practice in a way so that you will give yourself the best (chance),' Gavaskar said on Sony Sports. 'I mean Cheteshwar Pujara has been part of the optional team. I have seen some of the coaching staff, not this one, Cheteshwar was not part of this team, they said, 'Can't you have a break or something?'' he added. 'Whether Jasprit Bumrah is fit or not, I think Kuldeep Yadav has to come into the team. I do believe that he should come into the team for Shardul Thakur because the Birmingham pitch will be one where there will be just a little bit of help for the wrist spinner. 'If things don't go well in the second test, maybe Sai (Sudharsan) and Karun (Nair). I don't want to drop them at the moment. Then I'd also look at Washington (Sundar), so that it really gives you a more solid batting, and also get a little more variety as far the bowling is concerned,' Gavaskar added.
