Medieval knight's tomb discovered beneath former ice cream parlor in Poland: 'Very rare'
Polish archaeologists recently uncovered an elite knight's burial in remarkable condition – all in the middle of a bustling tourist city. The tomb was found in Gdańsk, Poland, a historic city revered for its colorful architecture and location on the scenic Motława River. The discovery was announced this month by Polish archaeology company ArcheoScan. The knight's grave was found beneath the former site of Lodziarnia Miś, a beloved ice cream parlor that once stood at the intersection of Sukiennicza and Grodzka streets. Speaking to Fox News Digital, the organization said the area was once a 13th-century cemetery next to the remains of Gdańsk's oldest known church. Both are located in the city's historic center, known as Śródmieście. "This church was built of oak wood cut down in 1140, based on dendrochronological dating," the organization said. "It is currently recognized as the oldest wooden church ever identified in Poland." The tombstone, dating to the late 13th or 14th century, was buried in an early medieval stronghold within the city. Archaeologists said the site was a "key place of power, faith and burial" in medieval Gdańsk. The tomb likely belonged to an elite knight, having been made from limestone imported from the Swedish island of Gotland. The grave's carvings were also skillfully crafted, suggesting a high-quality artisan produced the tombstone. "Figural tombstones showing full-length armored figures are rare in Poland, especially from the 13th–14th centuries." Pictures of the discovery show the faint image of a male figure standing upright wearing full chainmail armor and leggings. "He holds a sword and shield [in the image]," ArcheoScans noted. "Despite some damage, the head, left foot and many details of the armor and weapons remain visible." Although limestone is very fragile, ArcheoScan said the tombstone weathered the centuries well. "The tombstone is surprisingly well-preserved, considering it was made from soft limestone and buried for centuries," the organization added. "The carved figure, armor and shield are still visible." It also noted, "Tombstones like this were very rare in Poland at the time and were typically made for important people. However, there is no evidence linking the figure to the Teutonic Order, and no inscriptions confirm that connection." During the excavation, archaeologists carefully lifted the tomb slab and uncovered the knight's complete skeleton. An initial examination showed that the warrior stood between 5'5" and 5'9" tall, which was above average for the time. "The bones were found in anatomical alignment, confirming the tombstone marked the actual burial site," ArcheoScan added. "The skeleton is well-preserved, although no grave goods were found in association with the body." Experts hope to conduct additional research, including genetic analyses to determine the knight's age at death, as well as his health history. Further isotopic analysis may shed light on his lifestyle and diet, along with any other possible links to other burials. "Together, the tombstone, the church, and the cemetery help tell a rich and layered story of early medieval Gdańsk." Archaeologists also plan to conduct a facial reconstruction. ArcheoScan stressed that the discovery is "one of the most important archaeological finds in Poland in recent years," shedding light on burial customs as well as medieval symbolism. "Figural tombstones showing full-length armored figures are rare in Poland, especially from the 13th–14th centuries," the organization concluded. "Together, the tombstone, the church, and the cemetery help tell a rich and layered story of early medieval Gdańsk."

Complete skeleton of medieval knight found under former ice cream parlor in Poland
The centuries-old complete skeleton of a medieval knight was found under the former site of a famous ice cream shop in Poland, researchers said. The discovery was made on a small plot in Gdańsk, a city on the country's coast. The site was once home to an ice cream parlor called Miś, which operated there since 1962 but has since moved to a new location. Researchers say several other archaeological discoveries have been made at the site in recent years, including the remains of cottages dating back to the 12th and 13th century and an ancient city street. Archaeologists from the ArcheoScan Archaeological and Conservation Workshop were working on the site in July when they found the knight's tombstone. The stone, made of limestone, was engraved with the image of a knight, the organization said on social media. On July 8, the headstone was moved to Gdańsk's Archaeological Museum. Early analysis determined the stone likely dates back to the 13th or 14th century. Two days later, the team found the complete skeleton of the medieval knight. He was buried about five inches under the tombstone, researchers said on social media. He appears to have been about 40 years old when he died, anthropologist Dr. Aleksandra Pudło said in an article published on Gdańsk's official website. The knight appears to have been between about 5'6" and 5'10" tall, researchers said. Pudło said the skull and bones of the skeleton were very well-preserved. Gdańsk's website noted that the skull is in worse shape than the other bones. It's not clear who the knight may have served, according to Gdańsk's official website. The city was captured by a German Catholic military order called the Teutonic Knights in the early 13th century. It's also unclear if the burial predates or postdates the event, researchers said. The knight may have also served the Sobiesław dynasty, which ruled Gdańsk during the 11th and 12th century. More research will be conducted on the skeleton and the tombstone, as well as other relics found during the dig. Researchers have found several other notable tombstones, though the knight's appears to be the most impressive. The tombstone will be examined with 3D software, and archaeologists will likely attempt a detailed reconstruction of the artifact. Pudło said that the skeleton of the knight will undergo a "thorough examination," and the results of that may be available as early as next year.

Poland's Gaz-System to get $593 million loan for country's floating LNG terminal
WARSAW, June 18 (Reuters) - Polish pipeline operator Gaz-System will receive a 2.2 billion zlotys ($593 million) loan from state bank BGK to finance the onshore segment of Poland's first floating storage and regasification unit near Gdansk, BGK said on Wednesday. The loan, sourced from European Union funds, will finance construction of a 250-km (155-mile) pipeline that will connect the terminal to the core of Poland's gas network, BGK Deputy President Marta Pustula told reporters. The loan will be repaid over 25 years, Pustula added. The floating storage and regasification unit will be based in the Bay of Gdansk and is expected to be completed in 2028. In January, Gaz-System completed the expansion of its LNG terminal in Świnoujście, increasing its regasification capacity to 8.3 billion cubic metres, which corresponds to nearly 50% of the annual gas demand of domestic consumers. Equinor, Polenergia reach €6bn financial close for Bałtyk offshore wind projects
Equinor and Polenergia have announced the financial close for the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind projects with a combined value exceeding €6bn ($6.8bn). The transaction represents the largest project finance transaction in Poland's energy industry, according to Polenergia. The Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 projects, jointly developed by Equinor (50%) and Polenergia (50%), have secured project finance packages of over €3bn each. This milestone involves around 30 Polish and international financial institutions, including Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), European Investment Bank (EIB), and Nordic Investment Bank (NIB), alongside guarantees from the Polish export credit agency, KUKE, and cover policies from Euler Hermes. Polenergia CEO Adam Purwin said: 'We have secured financing from around 30 institutions - the biggest players in the international financial market — and obtained exceptionally favourable terms in what has been a challenging market in recent months. 'We are now entering the construction phase so that in three years, clean energy from state-of-the-art turbines will flow into Polish homes.' The Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms, to be developed in parallel, will consist of 100 fixed-bottom turbines with a total capacity of 1.4GW. The projects were awarded Contracts for Difference in 2021, locking in power prices for 25 years, with inflation indexation. On 19 May, the joint venture partners took final investment decisions for both projects, advancing them into the full-scale construction phase. Equinor will oversee the construction and operation of the wind farms, with onshore construction already underway and marine operations set to commence next year. Equinor senior vice president for renewables Europe Trine Borum Bojsen said: 'With financial close reached for Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3, the last important milestone is passed ahead of full-scale construction. 'We appreciate the strong interest and support from lenders. This underpins the attractiveness of the projects and the confidence in Polenergia and Equinor as developers.' The initiative is set to significantly bolster Poland's energy security and independence, with full commercial power production anticipated in 2028, providing power to more than two million Polish households. Equinor and Polenergia recently secured the final environmental decision for the development of the Bałtyk 1 offshore wind farm. With a planned capacity of up to 1.56GW, Bałtyk 1 is being prepared for Poland's offshore wind farm auction in 2025. "Equinor, Polenergia reach €6bn financial close for Bałtyk offshore wind projects" was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
