Sarah Michelle Gellar gives huge update on Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot
Don't miss out on the headlines from Movies. Followed categories will be added to My News. Sarah Michelle Gellar is single-handedly keeping the memory of the 90s alive for millennials this year. Earlier in 2025, she announced that she'll be stepping back into Buffy Summers' stylish boots, and now she's once again seemingly risen from the dead with a surprise cameo in Sony's reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Gellar became a horror icon when she starred alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe and future husband Freddie Prinze Jr in the original 90s horror flick as enigmatic beauty queen, Helen Shivers. The Hollywood star has partnered with Uber One in celebration of Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer . Picture: Supplied Despite being perhaps the biggest star in the movie, Gellar's character is killed off in a heartbreaking moment that's considered among horror fans be to be one of the best chase scenes ever put on film. While Gellar previously rubbished demands to return to the reboot, reminding fans that 'she's dead', it turns out the screen icon was keeping her cards very close to her chest. Speaking with about her new partnership with Uber One on their new advert that sees Gellar once again come face-to-face with the film's eerie fisherman himself, she revealed that she does indeed make a surprise return in the new movie that's out now in cinemas. 'So the first thing I can clarify is that I never said I wasn't going to be in it!' she laughed. 'I actually didn't intend to do it.' She explained that the movie's writer and director, Jennifer Robinson, who just so happens to be one of her closest friends – they talk twice a day, every day – insisted that she would find a way to bring back the fan favourite character. But Gellar wasn't convinced at first. 'She told me about three years ago that she wanted to do this and I was like, that's great. I'll help you with Freddy and I'll anything you need with the movie. I just can't be in it. She's like, 'I'm gonna figure out a way.' And I was like, 'There's no way. I'm dead. I'm not going to be a weird twin!'' Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr at the premiere of the new horror flick. Picture: Getty. Gellar as Helen Shivers in the original movie. Picture: Sony Despite her initial refusal to make a cameo, Robinson eventually found a way to bring back Shivers that Gellar felt honoured the character well enough to walk back onto set in the cover of darkness. 'I was getting up at five in the morning, sneaking into this set. I was not allowed to go outside the entire day that I was filming. because I was in the costume. So I literally was inside for an entire day.' The horror flick was shot entirely here in Australia, and Gellar's collaboration with Uber One came about while she and husband Prinze Jr were living in a home in Rose Bay. 'I usually do all the Uber ordering at home. And before we left, I said to him 'You have to get Uber for Australia because you're going to need it to get around and to order food,' so he finally let me put it onto his phone,' she shared. 'Our first favourite [order] was this great coffee shop in Rose Bay. I wish I could remember the name but they had the most wonderful Turkish coffee and little desserts that we ordered at least every other day while we were in Australia.' The 90s icon went on to share how much she 'loves' spending time Down Under, admitting that it's 'the one place' where she could see herself moving with her family at some point in the future. Gellar's role as Buffy is considered one of the most memorable TV performances of the last three decades. Picture: Supplied. Gellar went on to reveal that the hugely anticipated reboot of the show is set to get into production sooner than fans may have first realised. 'We're getting really close. We have to make sure everything is done right. But I will say we are filming very soon,' she teased. Ever since the reboot was first announced fans have been eager to know which of Buffy's pals might be seen returning to the show alongside her. In the original show, fan favourite character Anya, who was originally supposed to be in a handful of episodes only to become one of the most beloved characters, dies in the show's finale. It's a brutal second-long scene and for years fans have felt she was owed more. When I quizzed Gellar on whether the vengeance demon, played by Emma Caulfield, could return, she confessed that she's very much 'on the list' to come back. Emma Caulfield [right] could be making a comeback to the Buffy reboot, as long as Disney gives Gellar the budget. Picture: Warner. 'I will do my best to honour the original show while also giving a chance to the new characters. I tell everyone to be patient because if we bring back all of the new characters right away, then the audience doesn't have time to like and get to the know the new characters. They won't give them the time of day. So I want to make sure I do spend the right amount of time establishing the new characters.' 'But anyone that follows me knows that Emma and I are very close and obviously, you know, they're all on my list. 'We have to get Hulu and Disney to give us enough episodes, over the course of a couple of years, so we can bring everybody back. All the budget as well!' she said. I asked Gellar how she feels about the legacy of acclaimed Buffy episode The Body, in which she gives an incredible performance as Buffy deals with the shocking sudden death of her mother. Despite being heaped with praise at the time, because Buffy was still seen as a teen-leaning show on a lesser network, Gellar mostly missed out during awards season, only scoring one Golden Globe nomination in the end. Discussing whether she felt respected within the industry at the time, Gellar replied: 'That's an interesting question. I know a lot of people behind the scenes and on the set did feel that they [awards and critics] weren't for me. But I make the show for the fans, not for awards and critics.' 'And so I really felt the love,' insisted the star. 'If there was a nomination for an award from fans, we always won and people loved it and and so for me, that was the joy that I got. 'And I do have a Daytime Emmy,' she chuckled. 'It's very nice!' Gellar's new I Know What You Did Last Summer campaign ties in with Uber One's partnership with HOYTS, offering perks for members including discounted tickets ($12.50 for general admission, $27.50 for HOYTS LUX) and unlimited free popcorn refills. Jennifer Love Hewitt says she hasn't spoken to Sarah Michelle Gellar since she was 18
Jennifer Love Hewitt claims that she hasn't talked to her former costar Sarah Michelle Gellar in decades, as she dismissed feud rumors between the duo. The "I Know What You Did Last Summer" star, 46, told Vulture in a story published July 18 that she hasn't spoken to Gellar, 48, since the pair starred in the 1997 film of the same name. Feud rumors were sparked when eagle-eyed fans noticed that Gellar excluded Hewitt from an Instagram Story about the film, but the latter said that "I honestly don't even know what that was or how that all came to be." "I haven't seen Sarah," Hewitt told Vulture. "Literally, we've not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out. That's why it's so funny to me. People were like, 'Say something back.' And I'm like, 'What am I going to say? I've not seen her.' On my side, we're good. I have no idea where this is coming from." 'I Know What You Did Last Summer': Why Jennifer Love Hewitt was a 'nervous wreck' 'I just think people don't want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?" Hewitt said, telling the interviewer "I hope so" when it was suggested they may see each other at the film premiere. The Vulture interview purportedly took place before the "IKWYDLS" premiere on July 14 in Los Angeles. For her part, Gellar previously dismissed the idea that a rift existed, writing "for everyone asking" in an Instagram comment that "I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt who is fantastic in the movie. I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately JLH didn't come to the after party." In the 2025 version (released in theaters July 18), Gellar's husband Freddie Prinze Jr. stars opposite Hewitt, and the plot advances nearly 30 years after murders wreaked havoc on the small North Carolina town, as the pair reprise their roles. Gellar and Prinze, who met while filming the 1997 movie, and Hewitt all became teen idols after the success of the original. In the new film, new victims (played by Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon) are also targeted by a mysterious stalker and seek help from Prinze and Hewitt's characters.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' features shocking cameos by 2 award winners (spoilers!)
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the new I Know What You Did Last Summer revival. Guess we know what these two award winners — and I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise veterans — did last summer. Sony never tried to hide the fact that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. would be returning for the just-released 2025 revival as Julie James and Ray Bronson, who barely survived their own close encounter of the slasher kind with the hook-wielding Fisherman killer in the original 1997 film. But this latest Last Summer features a pair of shocking cameos by two other key players from the first movie and its 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Daytime Emmy winner Sarah Michelle Gellar and Grammy winner Brandy Norwood both return for the new film — which takes place 25 years after the events of the original — and their surprise appearances inspired loud cheers and applause in the screening that Gold Derby attended. More from Gold Derby How 'Smurfs' points to the dire straits of the Best Animated Feature Oscar race 'She dies with me': Shari Lewis' daughter talks Lamb Chop's final act - including a new TV show and that song that will never end Gellar's cameo was particularly shocking, because the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star was adamant in interviews that she wouldn't be joining Hewitt and Prinze — her real-life husband — onscreen, despite a personal appeal from the film's director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The reason for her resistance? The fact that Gellar's character — Southport, N.C.'s resident beauty queen Helen Shivers — didn't survive her first run-in with the Fisherman. "As I explained to Jennifer, I am dead," Gellar told Entertainment Tonight in 2023. "I am dead dead. On ice. "[Jennifer was] like, 'Are you sure you're dead dead?' I'm like, 'It's soap-dish dead. I don't have a head. You can't write for someone that doesn't have a head. I'm dead.'" And, for the record, Helen is still dead in the new Last Summer — avoiding the dual resurrections that Buffy Summers endured during the course of her vampire-slaying adventures. (If you need a memory refresh, Buffy was brought back to life by CPR at the end of Season 1 and via witchcraft at the start of Season 6.) Instead, Gellar returns in a dream sequence and greets her contemporary counterpart, aspiring beauty queen Danica (Madelyn Cline). Gellar's return is hinted at earlier in the movie when Danica's best friend, Ava Brucks (Chase Sui Wonder), is filled in on the lore of the Southport serial killer by a visiting true-crime podcaster (Gabbriette Bechtel), who has Helen's face emblazoned on a T-shirt. There's also a cameo of sorts by Helen's equally dead boyfriend Barry Cox, played by Ryan Phillippe — the one O.G. cast member who doesn't return. During a visit to a graveyard, two characters stumble upon Barry's tombstone and make a joke about the double meaning of his last name. Later on, Ava and Danica are being held at the police station when the latter falls asleep and slips into a hallucinatory recreation of the beauty pageant that preceded her predecessor's gruesome demise. Even in the afterlife, Helen has plenty of attitude. After teasing Danica for her Fisherman-related fears, she gives the poor girl actual shivers as her pageant-perfect face decomposes into a talking corpse. Throughout her brief, but memorable cameo, Gellar is quick on her feet and quick with the quips — which gives fans all the more reason to look forward to the upcoming Buffy revival, directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao. Buffy's second life will also hopefully give Gellar a second shot at a Primetime Emmy nomination — something she was repeatedly denied during its original seven season run despite the show's acclaim. Her performance was nominated for a Golden Globe, a TCA Award, and a Gold Derby TV Award for Drama Lead Actress of the Decade in 2010, nine years after the series finale aired. Prior to her vampire slaying days, she received two Daytime Emmy nominations for her breakout performance as Kendall Hart on All My Children, winning the statuette in the since-discontinued Best Younger Leading Actress category in 1995 at the age of 18. Meanwhile, her Last Summer performance netted her a Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Supporting Actress, as well as an MTV Movie Award nomination for breakthrough performance. Make sure you don't run screaming from the theater when the Last Summer credits start to roll, because there's one more surprise in store. A mid-credits sequence switches locations to a suburban house where news coverage of the latest Southport killing spree is playing out on a living room TV screen. Watching the footage is none other than Norwood's Karla Wilson, who had the unfortunate luck to be college roommates with Julia during the events of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. And she's clearly not over the experience all these years later. "Why do people keep trying to kill this girl?" she marvels to her husband. But then a knock on the door signals that her past and present are about to collide. Sure enough, Julia is there to fill Karla in on what just happened — and what's going to happen next. Another killer is still out there and rather than wait for him to come to them, they're going to go to him. Stay tuned for I Definitely Still Know What You Did Last Summer in 2027. Norwood made her theatrical feature film debut with the Last Summer sequel, which hit multiplexes one year after she headlined the beloved 1997 TV movie musical version of Cinderella costarring Whitney Houston. Like Gellar, she was nominated for an MTV Movie Award and a Blockbuster Entertainment Award for playing Hewitt's friend and fellow Fisherman target. The film also arrived in the middle of Norwood's storied late '90s Grammy run, which started with nominations for Best Female R&B Vocalist in 1996 and 1997 for "Baby" and "Sittin' Up in My Room," respectively. (Funnily enough, she didn't record a song for the second Last Summer soundtrack, but Hewitt did use the film to drop her own single, "How Do I Deal.") Norwood struck awards gold in 1999 with her sophomore album, Never Say Never, featuring her blockbuster duet with Monica, "The Boy is Mine." That track received Grammy nods for Record of the Year and Best R&B Song, and won for Best R&B Performance by a Duo — a victory that the singers shared. Never Say Never was also nominated for Best R&B Album, but lost to Lauryn Hill's legendary solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. In an appropriate bit of timing, Norwood and Monica are hitting the road in October for "The Boy is Mine" tour. That's also when the new I Know What You Did Last Summer will be available for Halloween streaming. Now we know how '90s kids will be spending their spooky season... 'I honestly don't even know what that was or how that all came to be,' Hewitt said about speculation of a possible feud between her and Gellar. I was like, 'What are you talking about?'' 'I was 18,' the 'Party of Five' alum said. 'They were not taking script notes from me guys. Like what are you talking about?' Jennifer Love Hewitt shares her side after Sarah Michelle Gellar's IKWYDLS premiere feud comments
Jennifer Love Hewitt has addressed long-standing rumors of a feud with her I Know What You Did Last Summer co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar, revealing that the two actresses haven't spoken in decades. In a recent interview with Vulture published on July 18, Hewitt said she and Gellar have not kept in touch since the release of the original 1997 slasher film. 'I haven't seen Sarah,' Hewitt shared. 'Literally, we've not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out.' The 46-year-old actress explained that she has no ill feelings toward Gellar and doesn't understand where speculation about a feud originated. 'I honestly don't even know what that was or how that all came to be,' she said. 'I just think people don't want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?' The interview was conducted prior to the Los Angeles premiere of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel on July 14, which both actresses attended. Despite being at the same event, they did not cross paths. Gellar later addressed their lack of interaction in an Instagram comment, explaining that she missed the red carpet because she was inside with her children and didn't attend the after-party where Hewitt was also absent. 'I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt who is fantastic in the movie,' Gellar wrote. 'Unfortunately some things happen only in real life and not online.' Gellar and Hewitt starred in the original film alongside Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe, and Johnny Galecki. While Gellar's character was killed off in the original, she has remained involved with the franchise due to her connection to director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and her marriage to Prinze.
