Egypt, Novartis explore expanding collaboration in oncology, cardiology
Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairperson of Egypt's General Authority for Healthcare and supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, met on Sunday with Gehan El-Emary, Chairperson and Managing Director of Novartis Egypt, to follow up on the progress of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February. The MoU, which aims to enhance cancer care, broaden cardiology collaboration, and promote medical training, has seen significant developments, according to an official statement from the Authority. El-Sobky highlighted the authority's goal to transform the Aswan Oncology Center into a leading regional and research hub for cancer treatment, with the involvement of international partners, including Novartis. During the meeting, El-Sobky extended a formal invitation to Novartis officials to visit the center and explore potential areas for further collaboration on-site. The meeting also focused on efforts to modernize clinical protocols for heart disease and breast cancer, alongside expanding training programs for healthcare providers in line with global best practices. El-Sobky emphasized the importance of increasing the number of physicians benefiting from these programs in partnership with Novartis to strengthen healthcare delivery across Egypt. In addition, the two sides discussed the possibility of launching a certified digital training platform designed to equip family doctors with the tools and skills necessary to manage non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and chronic heart conditions. They also explored innovative strategies to raise public health awareness and ensure continuity of care in underserved areas. Gehan El-Emary expressed pride in the growing partnership between Novartis and the General Authority for Healthcare, noting the tangible successes achieved through their joint initiatives. She reaffirmed Novartis's ongoing commitment to expanding its collaboration with the Authority, particularly in the areas of early detection, cancer care, cardiology, and chronic disease management.

Operating under its flagship initiative, 'We Care for You in Egypt', GAH has expanded specialised services in fields such as cardiology, orthopaedics, cosmetic procedures, and general surgery. The authority's facilities have seen growing demand following a comprehensive digital transformation programme that includes digitised patient records, automated booking systems, and integrated follow-up care protocols—all aimed at aligning services with international standards. As part of efforts to streamline medical access and financial processing, GAH has signed agreements with 25 international health insurance companies. These partnerships allow the authority to offer unified medical packages that address both the clinical and financial needs of incoming patients, including pre-travel consultations and post-operative care. These developments form part of a national strategy to increase Egypt's competitiveness in the global medical tourism sector. Key components of this strategy include strengthening digital infrastructure, expanding internationally accredited hospitals, and building a care pathway that spans the full patient journey—from initial outreach to post-discharge recovery.

May 13, 2025 Egypt is preparing the pilot launch of its first national artificial intelligence-based platform for remote medical diagnosis, according to Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare and Supervisor of the Comprehensive Health Insurance Project. The new platform will rely on the latest treatment protocols issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the goal of improving diagnostic accuracy and reducing response times across public health services. The announcement came during a meeting between Dr. El-Sobky and Dr. Nima Saeed Abid, WHO Representative in Egypt, as the two parties discussed strategies to advance the country's healthcare system. Dr. El-Sobky noted that the Authority is already a regional leader in adopting global medical standards, having implemented both the ICD-11 disease classification and ICHI intervention coding systems—becoming the first healthcare body in the MENA region to do so. These systems are expected to significantly improve public health tracking, inform national health policies, and support clinical decision-making at scale. The AI platform is part of a broader digital transformation plan aimed at aligning Egypt's healthcare sector with international best practices. The collaboration between WHO and the General Authority for Healthcare focuses on six key areas, including joint research, the establishment of a WHO-accredited emergency medical team, and the launch of a Collaboration Centre specialising in clinical governance and infection control. Upper Egypt at heart of development plans
Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare and General Supervisor of the Comprehensive Health Insurance Project Ahmed al-Sobky stated that the expansion of the comprehensive health insurance umbrella in Aswan embodies the vision of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in building the Egyptian human being. He emphasized that Upper Egypt is at the heart of health development plans, noting that the authority's facilities in the governorate reflect remarkable progress in line with international standards, placing the citizen as a top priority. The General Authority for Healthcare received European Union Ambassador to Egypt and the Arab League Angelina Eichhorst and Chairperson of the National Council for Women Amal Ammar and Governor of Aswan Ismail Kamal during their visit to inspect several hospitals affiliated with the authority in Aswan Governorate, most notably Al Masalla Specialized Hospital. Sobky said that he is proud of the trust of international partners in the authority's capabilities, pointing out that the EU ambassador has praised the massive development in healthcare, which reflects Egypt's success in this vital area and confirms that the authority has become a model to be followed both locally and internationally. He also expressed pride in the comprehensive strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union, signed on March 17, 2024, between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He stressed that it is considered a strong launch pad to boost cooperation in the health sector and enhance development and sustainability efforts, adding that the authority is steadily moving towards achieving universal health coverage in accordance with the highest global standards. Sobky concluded his statements by emphasizing that Aswan Governorate is receiving special attention as part of the authority's plan to expand the provision of advanced healthcare services, in implementation of the political leadership's directives to achieve health equity and equal opportunities in all governorates, where universal health insurance is being implemented. For her part, Eichhorst expressed her admiration for the level of healthcare in Aswan, describing it as 'impressive,' confirming that what she witnessed inside the healthcare authority's hospitals on the ground proves the Egyptian state's commitment to improving citizens' lives and advancing public services. She added that the EU's support for Egypt in the healthcare sector comes within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership, noting that Egypt is one of the largest countries enjoying the EU's trust and support, which reflects the importance of this joint cooperation.

Egyptian Hospitals, Medical Facilities on High Alert During Easter and Sham El-Nessim Celebrations
Emergency entrance at one of Egyptian hospitals- press photo CAIRO – 20 April 2025: The General Authority for Healthcare, affiliated with Egypt's Ministry of Health, has announced its medical preparedness plan for the Easter holiday (Resurrection Sunday on April 20) and Sham El-Nessim (the national spring festival on April 21). According to a statement issued Sunday by Ahmed Al Subki, head of the Authority, a maximum state of alert has been declared across 267 family medicine centers and units, as well as 38 hospitals operating at various levels of care across the country. This brings the total number of healthcare facilities on alert to 305 in the governorates covered by the comprehensive health insurance system—namely, Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Suez, and Aswan. Specialized poison control centers, equipped with the latest technology and laboratories, have also been activated in these six governorates to promptly handle any potential food poisoning incidents. The move comes in anticipation of increased consumption of "fesikh," a traditional fermented fish dish popularly eaten during Sham El-Nessim.
