Egypt joins FAO General Committee as agriculture ministers meet in Rome

Egypt was unanimously elected as a member of the General Committee of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) conference, which began its 44th session in Rome on Monday. Egyptian Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk is attending the event, which was opened by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu. The General Committee, comprising only seven of the organisation's 194 member states, is responsible for reviewing all decisions and conclusions from the conference and providing recommendations for their final adoption. The opening session also saw the election of a new conference president and vice-presidents. The FAO Conference is the organisation's supreme governing body and typically meets every two years to discuss policy and make decisions on global food and agriculture issues. This session is set to address numerous food security and agricultural topics that are currently high on the international agenda. Farouk stated that the conference is a vital platform for discussing current global challenges related to food security, climate change, and sustainable agricultural development. 'Its importance is increasing in this critical phase, which requires concerted international efforts to find innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure the provision of sufficient and safe food for all countries,' he said in a statement. The minister noted that Egypt is participating in the conference to exchange expertise and leading practices in areas such as smart agriculture, water resource management, and climate change adaptation, in order to enhance its food security and reduce its food gap. Saad Mousa, the Supervisor of Foreign Agricultural Relations at the ministry, said Farouk's participation reflects Egypt's role in U.N. agricultural organisations, particularly the FAO. He also noted that the minister is holding bilateral meetings with his counterparts to enhance agricultural cooperation. Saad Mousa and Mina Rizk, the Alternate Representative to the U.N. organisations at the Egyptian Embassy, also attended the session.

Get well soon! PMK President Anbumani on party veteran GK Mani's hospitalisation

DHARMAPURI: A General Committee meeting of the PMK held in Dharmapuri on Thursday passed over 17 resolutions, including implementation of the Cauvery Surplus Water Scheme, improvement of rural roads, and implementation of the pending water management scheme, among other resolutions. PMK President Dr Anbumani Ramadoss who spoke at the meeting took a jibe at party veteran GK Mani who has been hospitalised amid speculation that he did so to avoid the party meeting. "Has the honorary president of the party come to the meeting? In the morning, we prayed for his well-being in Salem. It seems it will take a few days. I guess our prayers are not enough. I sincerely wish him and others good health," Anbumani remarked. Referring to the recent spat with party founder and his father S Ramadoss over control of the party, Anbumani further said, "My commitment is to the party and its cadre. This is all I can say at this time. There are many burdens that I cannot share". Earlier in the day Anbumani attended a district general body meeting of the party in Salem. As reported earlier PMK's two MLAs --its Assembly floor leader GK Mani and R Arul -- were admitted to separate hospitals in Chennai on June 18 owing to 'sudden' illness. It is suspected the two did so to avoid attending Thursday's district general council meetings called by Anbumani.

Uttarakhand to make 1 lakh people learn Sanskrit to make it ‘common' spoken language

With an aim to promote Sanskrit, the second official language of the State, as common spoken language, the Uttarakhand government on Thursday announced it will make 1 lakh people learn the language through classroom or online mode. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the project for Sanskrit learning for common people will be implemented in a phased manner and the government will come up with schemes to ensure jobs for youth learning Sanskrit. For this, the CM has asked the department concerned to make arrangements for certificate courses in 'yagya', Hindu rituals and Vedas recitation. He added that nodal officers should be appointed in the districts to promote Sanskrit. Mr. Dhami was speaking at the 10th meeting of the General Committee of Uttarakhand Sanskrit Academy during which he instructed that arrangements should be made for better training of 16 sanskars (sacraments) for children studying Sanskrit. 'In the first phase, 100 children, and thereafter, every year by setting a target, the youth should be given training in the same. Also, competitions will be organized to make short films on various contemporary topics in Sanskrit along with schools organising debates, essay writing and shlok-writing competitions in the language,' Mr. Dhami said. Mr. Dhami promised that those who play an important role in teaching, writing, preservation and promotion of Sanskrit language will be honoured monetarily too. He added that it should be ensured that the nameplates in all offices should also be in Sanskrit language. Sanskrit Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that, at present, a total of 13 villages, one village in each district of the State, are being made Sanskrit Gram. Egyptian Parliament holds emergency meeting following Trump statements

Shafaq News/ The Egyptian Parliament held an emergency meeting on Monday as a response to US President Donald Trump's recent remarks, and to formulate a 'comprehensive action plan." The meeting reviewed efforts to strengthen ties with regional and international sides and to reaffirm Egypt's rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians. In a recent press conference aboard Air Force One, Trump proposed relocating approximately 1.5 million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Egypt and Jordan, but this proposal has been met with firm rejection from both Egypt and Jordan. On his Truth Social, Trump said that 'we must make a deal soon, or there will be no other choice but to consider temporary relocation solutions for Palestinians." He added, 'I care deeply about the people of Palestine, but we need action to end this conflict." These comments sparked immediate backlash, with Egyptian officials viewing them as an 'implicit endorsement of forced displacement.' The Egyptian Parliament released a statement in which it reiterated its full support for President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's leadership, emphasizing his 'commitment to protecting Egypt's national security and safeguarding Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian cause,' and warned that any attempt to relocate Palestinians from their homeland would threaten regional stability and Egypt's security. Parliament Speaker Hanafy El Gebaly announced that 'Egypt's position will be translated into English and French and distributed to parliamentary organizations across the globe,' as a strategy to oppose the idea of Palestinian displacement. As part of the response, the Parliament's General Committee was tasked with drafting a roadmap for improving communication with international parliaments, aiming to rally support for a fair and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian cause. 'The idea of moving Palestinians out of their land is a red line for Egypt,' an official source emphasized.
