Chris Gotterup Put on the Clock at Scottish Open Had His Blood Boiling
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The not-so-famous PGA Tour pro, Chris Gotterup's win at the Genesis Scottish Open on Sunday was a result of boiling blood. The 25-year-old American outdueled Rory McIlroy with his final-round of 66 to claim the second Tour title and a ticket to next week's Open Championship at Royal Portrush. Additionally, his 15-under-par win also earned him a $1.575 million paycheck and a new Electrified GV70 courtesy of Genesis. But the path to the trophy was not an easy one. The Easton, MD native was warned over slow play on the back nine. Chris Gotterup had his 'blood going' before Scottish Open win After a bogey on the first hole, Gotterup bounced back with five birdies until drama unfolded. "We got warned on like 13 for pace, which was a little odd because we were waiting all day," he explained after signing his name to the winner's list. (Photo by) More Getty Images "Then on 15, I got individually timed, which was shocking. That got my blood going a little bit more than it was already going trying to win a golf tournament" Interestingly, the adrenaline spike didn't rattle him but pushed him forward. Gotterup quickly responded with a 10-foot birdie on the par-5 16th, the hole he'd failed to birdie all week. "I talked all week about how I didn't birdie 16... I made it and I felt like that was the point where it was my tournament to lose". The underdog's emotional post-round interview with Amanda Balionis captured the weight of the moment. "I'm not going to be able to keep it together," he said, wiping his eyes. When asked again what it meant, he added, "Yeah, thanks for getting me to cry again". As we all know, the crowd was madly behind Rory McIlroy, and Gotterup too felt it deeply. "I definitely was the villain out there a little bit. There was a lot of 'Rory' and not many 'Chris.' I felt like I was ready and prepared mentally. It feels great," he expressed later. "Rory is one of the best to ever do it," he added. "Happy I edged him out. Amazing." This win, he said, felt like validation. "They are both very special," Gotterup said, comparing it to his 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic win. The win was made sweeter by two things. First, because of his former college coach, who flew in from Europe at the last minute. "He believed in me way before a lot of other people did, besides my parents. For him to be here and see that unfold is pretty cool." Secondly, for a pure class act from Rory McIlroy. As Gotterup signed his scorecard, the 2023 Scottish Open winner sat beside him and offered a quiet pat on the back, a gesture of respect from one champion to another. Now, it is off to McIlroy's home, Northern Ireland, for the Open Championship. More Golf: Scottish Open: Nico Echavarria's Sick Hole-in-One Lands Him a Car

Scottie Scheffler's Amazing Reaction at Scottish Open Becomes a Meme
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Scottie Scheffler's putting at the Genesis Scottish Open was once again a sign that he's human after all. Although it wasn't one of his worst putting performances, the ultra-competitive Scheffler was deeply frustrated with his work on the greens, especially during the fourth round. Such displays of discontent aren't common for him, but most fans love them, as they bring the World No. 1 down to Earth from time to time. One that's now iconic occurred on the 13th green during the final round of the Scottish Open, going so viral that it's become a meme. Scheffler had an 8-foot birdie putt. The execution of the shot looked perfect; you can even see that the ball broke in the right direction, but not far enough, and just missed the edge of the hole. That's when Scheffler reacted, opening his arms and seemingly signaling the full amount of room the ball had to hit the hole, rather than 'choosing' to go wide. Scottie Scheffler is really enjoying the greens in Scotland. — Mark Harris (@itismarkharris) July 13, 2025 Fair enough, Scheffler parred the hole on his way to a final round 67. His performance for the day included an eagle, three birdies, and two bogeys. The Ridgewood, New Jersey, native lost 1.455 strokes with his putting, ranking 64th among all members of the field. Despite this, he finished tied for eighth, making up for it with his extraordinary work approaching the green (six strokes gained) and off-the-tee (2.859 strokes gained). MoreScottie Scheffler "Really Close" Ahead of The Open Championship Like most of his peers, Scottie Scheffler will travel from Scotland to Northern Ireland to play in the Open Championship at Royal Portrush this week. The three-time major champion will be among the favorites for the title, especially considering that his performance at the Scottish Open appeared to be an 'adjustment' in preparation for the season's fourth major. "Definitely got adjusted to the time zone. I feel like I did some good stuff this week," he said. "It was unusually warm this week. We'll see what the weather is like next week but overall, I could have played a little bit better this week. But overall, pleased with how I played the last couple days." "I feel like I'm really close. I feel like I was close to playing some really good golf. Just got to get some momentum." Scheffler has finished in the top 25 in all 15 tournaments he has played this season. The Genesis Scottish Open was his 10th consecutive top-10 finish, including all three of his wins of the year. It is that level of consistency that puts him head and shoulders above every golfer alive. More Golf: Rory McIlroy out-dueled by unknown PGA Tour pro at Scottish Open

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. There were two co-sanctioned events between the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour this week: the Genesis Scottish Open and the ISCO Championship. The Scottish Open wrapped earlier today as Chris Gotterup claimed his second victory of his career. He defeated the likes of World No. 2 Rory McIlroy by two strokes as he fired off a 4-under 66 on Sunday to secure a nice paycheck. Gotterup opened his day with a bogey, but quickly got his nerves under control. The 25-year-old rattled off six birdies to get the job done. He also won last year's Myrtle Beach Classic. With this win, Gotterup earned $1,575,000 and 500 FedEx Cup points. It is a life-changing victory, as it has earned him a spot in next week's Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. McIlroy settled for a 2-under 68 to put him at 13-under overall. He finished tied for second with England's Marco Penge. They both won $788,175. Nicolai Højgaard and Matt Fitzpatrick tied for fourth place and earned a prize of $407,250 each. Scottish Open: Nico Echavarria's Sick Hole-in-One Lands Him a Car
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. One of the main attractions of the Genesis Scottish Open was undoubtedly the 6th hole, where players competed for more than just a good score: the chance to win a brand-new car. It took until the final round, but the magic finally happened. Nico Echevarría carded a spectacular ace on the Scottish Open's signature hole with its stadium-like design. His tee shot landed on the green less than five feet from the pin, with such a fortunate line that it went straight into the hole after bouncing a couple of times. Good line by the caddie," he said. The car Echavarría won is a Genesis GV60, an electric SUV valued at more than $50,000 in the United States. "It's awesome," he said."Very happy. Just got to thanks Genesis for the support, not only do they have this tournament but also the one we play early in the year on the PGA Tour." "So they are a great partner for both Tours, and hopefully they can keep supporting us." But Echavarría's lucky shot was also special for a fan. As it happens, the event's name sponsor, Genesis, allowed fans to choose which player they thought would hit the ace, with an incredible prize for the winner. Photo by Andrew Redington / Getty Images NORTH BERWICK, Scotland — Chris Gotterup came up with the clutch shots on the biggest stage he has faced Sunday, taking down crowd favourite Rory McIlroy with a 4-under 66 and a two-shot victory in the Scottish Open that gives him another week of links golf. Gotterup's lead was down to one over McIlroy and England's Marco Penge, but McIlroy missed a 12-foot birdie at the par-5 16th and Gotterup hit a right-to-left putt from 10 feet in the heart of the cup for a two-shot lead with two to play. Gotterup was so emotional when it was over he could barely speak, rubbing his eyes before saying, 'Everyone at home … this is awesome. I'm not going to be able to keep it together.' He didn't blink the rest of the way on the course after his final birdie, winning by two over McIlroy (68) and Penge (66) for his second PGA Tour title. 'Chris played a great round of golf. He was so solid,' McIlroy said. 'Made the bogey on 15 but bounced back with a really nice birdie on 16. After he got a couple ahead, I just couldn't claw back.' Gotterup, built more like fellow New Jersey athlete Mike Trout than a golfer, also won the opposite-field Myrtle Beach Classic last year. Next stop is the British Open The Genesis Scottish Open had one of the strongest fields of the year, and the perks are far greater. Gotterup, who played three years at Rutgers and won player-of-the-year awards as a senior at Oklahoma, gets into the Masters for the first time next April. The first stop is the British Open at Royal Portrush. Gotterup earned one of the three final spots through the International Qualifying Series, joined by Nicolai Hojgaard and Matti Schmid. Hojgaard closed with a 64 to move up 11 spots into a tie for fourth to join his twin brother at Royal Portrush. Schmid shot 71 and tied for 17th, helped by Jake Knapp's late collapse. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Knapp was tied for the lead through five holes, but he took double bogey on the par-3 ninth and the rest of the back nine didn't go much better. He closed with a 74, losing on a chance to win and to play next week at Royal Portrush. Good timing for McIlroy McIlroy had said he was playing his best golf since going into the Masters, which he won in emotional fashion to complete the career Grand Slam. This was the first time he had seriously contended since that Masters victory, good timing with the Open in his native Northern Ireland starting on Thursday. But he couldn't keep up with Gotterup, who looked shaky at the start when he drove into a bunker and had to make a 4-foot bogey putt. He was rock solid the rest of the way. 'I'm really happy with where my game is — the way I played over the weekend, the shots that I hit, how I controlled my ball flight,' McIlroy said. 'It has been a great week. Missing the trophy, that's about it.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. McIlroy battled to the end, especially on No. 11 when he had to pitch out left-handed and still managed to save par. When it was over, he said he was on his way to Royal Portrush, which McIlroy had not seen since the Friday of the 2019 British Open when he missed the cut. Former U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick had a 67 and tied for fourth with Hojgaard, picking up valuable FedEx Cup points in what has been a down year. Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player coming off a two-week break, had a 67 and tied for eighth. It was his 10th consecutive tournament finishing eighth or better, a streak that began in the Houston Open. Toronto & GTA Golf Toronto Raptors Toronto & GTA Toronto & GTA
