‘Love when brides get married looking very much like themselves': Charli XCX's wedding reveals wider trend

Singer Charli XCX wed musician George Daniel, and all anyone can talk about is what the star couple didn't do. When two famous people get married, it is usually a spectacle that exposes just how different celebrities are from the rest of us. It is a big reminder that they have personal assistants and endless budgets, while the rest of us have siblings who have to help out of family obligation and a firm budget that makes you feel physically sick when you go over it. Leave it to Charli XCX, though, to be ahead of the trend. She managed to pull-off a low-key celebrity wedding that came across as genuine, rather than a gimmick. It also looked like a normal wedding, like the kind your trendy friend would throw that is actually fun to attend. The couple got married at a town hall in Hackney, surrounded by fewer than 30 guests, and then held their reception at a local Italian eatery. Charli XCX and the 1975 bandmate were then seen hanging out at the restaurant and \ wandering the streets as husband and wife with all their guests. It is very on point for the singer, with a growing trend towards 'quiet weddings'. If you've never heard the phrase, you'll need to get on TikTok because the Gen Zers are loving it. The term basically just means a smaller wedding, less lavish and more barbecue vibes. The concept has naturally risen in popularity as cost of living pressures have increased. According to social media data website, Aura Point, there have been over 62,000 monthly searches from couples trying to find their local registry office. A recent survey found that 29 per cent of couples are opting for smaller, more intimate wedding ceremonies. Despite the wedding being more relaxed, Charli XCX was still wearing a high-fashion custom Vivienne Westwood gown but, otherwise, the whole shindig looked unnervingly normal. It didn't look glitzy, over-the-top or inaccessible. It looked low-key, but effortlessly cool, which is not a surprise seeing as Charli XCX made Brat summer happen. The bride even had time to jump on TikTok and joke that if her musician groom didn't cry when he saw her walking down the aisle, she'd be turning around. Perhaps what is most interesting is that the singer's chill wedding is garnering as much fanfare as, say, Tammy Hembrow's Bryon Bay extravaganza, when she married Matt Zukowski. Gen Zers online are loving it to the point where perhaps a giant wedding is now just another thing Millennials do that is considered cringe worthy by the younger generation. 'I don't know how to explain it but I really love when brides get married looking very much like themselves,' one praised. 'Charli getting married at Hackney Town Hall, in Viv Westwood, then coming out the front to take pics like an East London royal wedding,' another Gen Zer raved. 'At Town hall? How very Brat of her,' someone else observed. 'She knows to make every moment unforgettable,' another said.

Inside Charli XCX's wild wedding party with cheap cocktails and trays of cigarettes

Charli XCX is going all out for her Sicilian wedding later this year, but she kept her first wedding to The 1975 drummer George Daniel far more Brat. Insiders told The Sun that the pair headed from Hackney Town Hall in London where they tied the knot, to nearby Italian restaurant Dalla, before inviting their 20 guests to join them for a massive night out at trendy new bar Ellie's in Dalston. And to get into the party mood, Charli swapped out of her $6,800 Vivienne Westwood Nova Cora mini dress into another white outfit – just in case she spilt a $16 martini down it. 'Charli's wedding reception was the epitome of Brat,' a source revealed. 'Her and George wanted to keep it very cool, so they shunned cars and walked down Hackney High Street to get to Dalla. 'The restaurant had closed for them and they had a massive family style meal with loads of pasta and champagne. 'People walking past were stunned when they saw Charli and George having a cheeky pre-dinner cigarette outside. 'Charli and Daniel then went to a nearby hotel to get changed before they went to Ellie's for a party.' Hip haunt Ellie's, which opened back in May, is fast making a name for itself as one of east London's trendiest haunts. It specialises in cheap martinis and saw Myles Smith shooting his GQ Magazine cover there earlier this year. Charli and George arrived hand-in-hand to get the party started, with more guests arriving at the door as the night went on. 'To get in you just had to walk up to the front and say 'Charli,'' the marital mole explained. 'Once inside Charli and George had laid on a free bar and there were trays of cigarettes lying around for the smokers. 'There was a 'no social media policy' so no one posted any of the pictures from the reception online. 'It went on until around 4am when everyone crashed out and went home.' The Sun first revealed back in 2023 that drummer George had proposed to Charli. In February last year, our sources revealed the pair had flown to Italy to scout out locations for their big day – and earlier this month one insider told us the pair had plumped for Sicily. Second ceremony The Sun reports that Charlie and George will fly out later this year for an epic celebration with their family and friends. 'This was the formal wedding and the big event is happening in a few months,' a source explained. 'Charli and George had the most perfect day in London. It was everything they wanted it to be, relaxed, informal and fun. 'Their wedding in Sicily is the big one and they can't wait for everyone to fly out there and be with them.' Charli opened up about their wedding plans last year and said they were going to throw a massive bash. She said: 'We're both very chill and we kind of just want to have a party. 'Neither of us are particularly formal about marriage or care about the formalities of the ceremony or whatever. 'We just want to be together forever and have a party with our friends.'

Charli XCX leads quiet wedding trend as Gen Z opt for smaller celebrations

Charli XCX and long-term boyfriend George Daniel kept their wedding low-key - following a Gen Z trend in 'quiet weddings' as more and more people opt for smaller gatherings It really is the end of Brat summer as Charli XCX tied the knot with her long term partner George Daniel last week. The 365 Party Girl singer kept her nuptials low-key, with the ceremony taking place in Hackney Town Hall and finishing off the celebrations in a cocktail bar in East London. ‌ It's created a surge in more people exploring 'quiet weddings'. Charli, who married The 1975 drummer, shared snaps of her day online, and following the quiet wedding trend that is being driven by Gen Z. ‌ Gen Z are driving the surge in quiet weddings, with more and more couples deciding to go against 'traditional' weddings, instead opting for something a lot smaller and intimate. There are about 62,000 monthly searches from couples trying to find their local registry office, while a recent survey found that 29% of couples are deciding to go for smaller, more intimate wedding ceremonies. ‌ So it seems micro-weddings weren't just for the pandemic. Couples who cut back on guests mean they are able to invest in more of their celebrations - such as pre- and post-wedding gatherings. This allows the couple to prioritise their spend on the things that matter most, whether that's a particular band, gourmet catering or the intimate venue of their dreams. Searches for local registry office weddings have increased more than 5000% in the past 30 days, with brides drawing inspiration from Charli XCX's Hackney Town Hall wedding. Pinterest's annual wedding report highlights that Gen Z is behind the surge, with couples choosing a chic yet intimate celebration, driving what Aura Print calls "quiet weddings". ‌ Why do Gen Z love a quiet wedding? Wedding specialists at Aura Print explain said: "Charli XCX married George Daniel over the weekend in a low-key town hall ceremony, heavily mimicking the trends we're currently seeing among Gen Z couples when it comes to wedding planning. They're rewriting the modern wedding traditions, pushing for more private and intimate celebrations - they want a 'quiet wedding'." ‌ It's also no longer cool to showcase every single moment of your life online or in person according to the experts. Social media trends show that Gen Z only share the occasional glimpse into their habits and hobbies, usually via a single image buried in a 10-swipe dump, which spans the past three months. "They're no longer announcing their pregnancies through curated craft-boards - it's too millennial," they add, and the same trends are starting to happen in wedding planning and execution. Think curated, yet aiming for an un-curated feel at the same time. Coined as 'registry-core' the new rising trend has seen a 5000% surge in city hall registry interest, often styled with modern and minimalist aesthetic, similar to Charli XCX's. It's a way for them to celebrate meaningfully while embracing effortless chic that feels personal. ‌ Influenced by the pandemic, it originally started as a necessity that quickly turned into a popular trend with unexpected benefits. They can provide more relaxed atmospheres, extra time with attendees, and less stress proving you don't need a big grand wedding for it to be meaningful. Aside from this, it's also a lot cheaper too, with the average cost of a wedding in 2025 around £20,822, the average registry office wedding cost is £1,342. With cost of living prices being higher than ever, smaller weddings offer an affordable alternative which doesn't sacrifice style or meaning. "By scaling back on guest lists and grand venues, Gen Z can celebrate their day and invest their budget differently - whether this leaves room for a longer honeymoon or buying their first home," the experts noted. Charli XCX's leftover wedding cake boxed up for fan

Charli XCX's leftover wedding cake was boxed up for a fan. The 32-year-old musician, born Charlotte Aitchison, married her long-term partner George Daniel, 34, over the weekend in an intimate ceremony held at Hackney Town Hall in east London, with the couple tying the knot in front of their parents and a small circle of close friends. Following the ceremony, Charli and George held a wedding dinner at the Italian restaurant Dalla, joined by around 20 guests, before continuing celebrations at a local bar. During the reception, a cake by Violet Cakes — the London bakery founded by Claire Ptak — was served, which featured white icing and was topped with a fig. A fan called Ruby said her friend, who worked as a waiter at Dalla on the night of the wedding, contacted her the following day to offer her a slice. She said in a video posted on her TikTok: 'He was like, 'Oh, do you want to swing by and get a slice?' He boxed up a slice for me. 'Then I think it was the owner of the restaurant that was like, 'Do you just want it? It's going to go in the bin.'' Ruby added: 'I swear I'm not a stalker,' while claiming she hadn't expected to receive more than a small portion, let alone the remaining wedding cake. After tasting it, she described the dessert as 'lovely'. Ruby also said she considered sharing the cake with other fans rather than selling it. 'My friends told me I could make some money and sell the cake to fans,' she said – adding: 'But that felt wrong.' She instead saved some extra slices for her friends, all of whom are fans of Charli. Online commenters expressed a mix of awe and confusion over her clip. One wrote: 'Imagine just sitting in your house eating Mr and Mrs XCX's wedding cake on a random day.' Another said: 'This is so weird but so iconic at the same time.' Some questioned whether Ruby should have accepted the cake at all. 'What if she wants it back?' asked one user. 'Is this considered theft?' wrote another, with a third commenting: 'This doesn't sit right with me.' Others defended Ruby and the restaurant's actions. One person said: 'Guys, as someone who also works at a restaurant, it is very common that people don't want to take the rest of their wedding cake home with them and then everyone in the kitchen gets to chow down on it. It's really not weird.' Another added: 'I used to spend my summers working as a cater waiter – have eaten many strangers' wedding cakes in my time.'
