Hawkesbury preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 20, 2025
A shifting track proved the undoing of Fly Scotty Fly last start but co-trainer Gerald Ryan expect the gelding to bounce back on a better surface. Fly Scotty Fly settled fourth, one off the fence, a Gosford on July 10 but just wasn't comfortable on the Soft 6 and dropped out to finish last behind Straand Beauty. 'He's no good when the track moves underneath him, said Ryan who trains in partnership with Sterling Alexiou. 'You only have to look at his form when he's been on quite soft ground, he has gone no good. 'We thought he would run really well in his first start in a race but he ran last and the same happened at Rosehill last preparation. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'He's a big heavy horse and when he hits the ground with any give in it, he would sink into it.' In his other three runs, the son of Brazen Beau was a head second to Stratafy on a Good 3 at Wyong and scored an all-the-way win from Firework on a Good 4 at the same track in consecutive runs last December. He then resumed this preparation with a second behind the in-form Cassiel on a Soft 5 at Hawkesbury where the track was good under foot. 'The track was pretty firm that day because they ran 1:02.94 and came home in 33.4 (seconds),' Ryan said. That was over 1100m and he steps out over the same trip in the Clarendon Tavern Benchmark 64 Handicap. 'It was a nice run that day and if he runs up to that, he will be a good chance here. 'We have tried him in blinkers since his last run and they seem to have made him focus even better.' Ryan and Alexiou also have Sweet Future in the same race but feel she will be better with this run under her belt. The three-year-old was midfield in her first two starts at provincial level before going to Bathurst third-up and scoring by a length last December. 'She is a nice filly and is better than what her form really shows,' said Ryan. 'It was good to get an early win on the board. 'She is coming along really well but 1100 metres around Hawkesbury will probably be a tad short for her. 'She will definitely improve off the run because she has come back a lot bigger and stronger filly now than what she was and is taking a bit to get fit, hence the two trials.' Ryan and Alexiou had two options this weekend with Cheeky Smirk and have opted to for the St Johns Park Bowling Club Maiden Plate (1100m) for colts and geldings and entires to make his race debut. The two-year-old son All Too Hard showed good speed to sit outside the leader, Leading Impact, and chased home strongly to finish a three-quarter length second in his Rosehill barrier trial on June 20. In his second trial, he went back early and didn't quite know what to do when sixth to Nashville Jack at Rosehill on July 4. 'His first trial was good then in his second trial when he went back, he got a bit lost in behind them,' Ryan said. 'That's why I like trialling young horses for speed one day and going back behind them the next. It gives them the experience both ways and you just find out a bit more about them.' Diddle Dumpling shines with frontrunning victory
Diddle Dumpling gave her strongest indication yet that she could be ready to fulfil her stakes potential with an impressive all-the-way success at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained filly back-to-back victories for the first time in her career with a sustained frontrunning performance in the The Agency Real Estate Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m). Ryan and Alexiou have always held Diddle Dumpling in high regard but have been forced to wait patiently for her to put it all together. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The daughter of Deep Field has returned a more complete package this campaign and it showed on her home track 'She has settled a lot in the brain this time around,' Ryan said. 'She had a good spell up and came back a lot stronger. 'She is a lot more settled in herself but she has always had the ability, it was just a matter of getting her to do things right. 'This time around she has done everything right.' A wide draw saw jockey Tim Clark make the decision to push forward early and control the race on Diddle Dumpling. He kicked a length and a half clear early in the straight and Diddle Dumpling was able to hold her rivals at bay, scoring by a length from Matthew Smith's Golden Straand ($13) with the Michael Freedman-trained Codetta ($5.50 favourite) in third. • Snowden youngster proves a winter Force after hat-trick 'She is a nice filly that can progress to a better grade,' Clark said. 'I think she can be versatile. Obviously our hand, we didn't have a lot of options out there and we had to roll with her. 'I was happy enough from out there to show my intent and generally if you show intent from out there you are a good chance of finding the front. 'She was able to do that and travel well. It took her 100m to work through her gears but when she got to her top she lengthened really well.' Diddle Dumpling was tested in stakes grade during her two-year-old and three-year-old seasons, including finishing fifth in last year's Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes. Ryan has ambitions to give Diddle Dumpling another chance in better company soon. 'We would love to get black type with her,' he said. 'There are a couple of those early mares races in August-September might be alright for her. 'We will see what's around.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ African Daisy completed the ultimate form reversal in the space of just a week to score her first victory in just under 900 days at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. A week after failing to beat a runner home at the same venue, the Jason Deamer-trained mare made a sensational return to form to score a determined win in the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1200m). African Daisy hadn't won a race since January 28, 2023 heading into Saturday when the daughter of American Pharoah had been trained by Annabel Archibald. But Deamer's decision to reach into the gear bag and add blinkers paid significant dividends. 'From the get-go she was really intent on putting herself there,' jockey Tim Clark said. 'She was really intent on putting herself into the race and showed she really wanted to be there. 'The blinkers really worked. 'Jase always turns out his horses in really good order and he's done a great job with her to turn her around.' Clark was able to make the most of barrier one to have African Daisy ($10) travelling behind the leaders on the fence. The energy conserving run allowed African Daisy to show a fresh set of heels as the six-year-old did enough to deny the Kerry Parker-trained Equilibrist ($7.50) and Ross McConville's Donwon ($17). 'She appreciated getting her toe into the ground, a good draw and a nice run,' Clark said. 'Things fell into place for her today and that's not always going to be the case but it was good to see when they did, she was able to capitalise on it.' Dynamic Syndications revealed African Daisy had been set for retirement but her victory could see the mare race on a little longer.

Randwick Inside Mail: Gerald Ryan-trained Grebeni poised for breakthrough in 2025 Civic Stakes
Grebeni can snap a frustrating run of feature race near misses in the Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou -trained Grebeni is racing very consistently without winning this preparation with four minor placings from five attempts. The striking chestnut resumed with a close third to Sandpaper in the Group 3 Newcastle Stakes before a narrow loss to Lavish Empire in the Muswellbrook Cup. Grebeni had excuses when unplaced behind Punch Lane at Randwick but he then ran a good third to Tavi Time in the Scone Cup before he ran Loch Eagle to less than a length in the Racing To Win Handicap. Ryan said there was some consideration given to saving Grebeni for a stakes race at Eagle Farm next week before it was decided to give the five-year-old his chance in the Civic Stakes. 'We were originally going to go to Eagle Farm but the way that track is racing we didn't want to risk him,'' Ryan explained. 'So, he will have this run then probably have a breather and we will get him ready for the Little Dance or the Big Dance in the spring.'' . @KPMcEvoy gets Grebeni home to win by half a length after going head to head in the last 200 with Riyazan! — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 30, 2023 • Grebeni, who has drawn well in barrier four, is at $10 in latest TAB Fixed Odds betting behind Civic Stakes favourite Headley Grange at $3. 'There is good speed in the race and Grebeni is coming back to 1400m so I thought he would be off the pace to midfield,'' Ryan added. Grebeni's stablemate, Green Shadows ($14), gives Ryan and Alexiou dual representation in the Civic Stakes. Green Shadows, part-owned by popular Sky Thoroughbred Central presenter Gavin Carmody, has also returned to racing this campaign in very good form but has drawn off the track. He ran a close second to Name Dropper in the Tamworth Cup then was beaten three-quarters of a length by Headley Grange over 1300m at Randwick last start. 'Green Shadows comes in to either 14 or 16 after the scratchings,'' Ryan said. Promising three-year-old who didn't shirk his task when second to a smart older horse in Kerguelen last start. Brave One has drawn a little awkwardly but Team Hawkes has found the right race for him and with even luck in running he's going to be very hard to beat. He comes to Randwick off a career-best effort at Kembla Grange where he gapped his rivals, winning by a widening margin of more than three lengths when shouldering 60.5kg in heavy going. Hooligan Tommy drops 2.5kg, gets onto a more suitable firmer track and he's at value odds near $8.
