Water park to reopen 'ahead of schedule' after £1.5m upgrade

A water park in North Lanarkshire is set to reopen after major £1.5m upgrade works were completed ahead of schedule. Time Capsule Water Park in Coatbridge will reopen on July 19, four months after it was closed for planned maintenance. The works included the installation of new pumps and blowers for the waterfalls and river rapids at the park. Upgrades were also made to the electrical systems at the park, with over a mile of new wiring and colour-changing underwater LED lights added. New soft rubber flooring has been installed at Splashdown Island and Coral Cove, while tiles and the river rapid slides have been repaired. Shower areas have also been updated to make 'everything more welcoming for visitors'. STV News However as further renovations at the water park are being planned, attractions such as the big tipping bucket and the yellow flume aren't open to the public yet. Duty manager Graeme Semple said the park was booked out for its reopening weekend. 'The Time Capsule facility is not only a local sports facility for the people of Coatbridge and the surrounding areas, it is a tourist attraction that people come from far and wide,' he told STV News. He added that visitors from as far north as Inverness and as far south as Wales have come to the water park for a day of fun. 'It's a place that people, if they come on holiday to Scotland, want to come and spend a good few hours, and we've welcomed visitors back time and time again,' he said. Councillor Geraldine Woods, convener of community services, said that the improvements make visiting the park 'more enjoyable'. 'Now that the first phase is nearly done, we are delighted to announce that we are once again taking bookings.' Visitors need to book in advance on the North Lanarkshire Council website. There is a 25m swimming pool, a Tsunami wavepool, and a Riptide River, and also boasts a wave machine, fun flumes and other 'unique' rides. And the upgrades to the much-loved attraction have seen new pumps and blowers installed to improve the waterfalls and river rapids. The revamp has also seen the full electrical system upgraded, which includes the installation of new wiring that stretches for over a mile. Brand-new colour-changing LED underwater lighting was also installed in some areas to brighten the pool. Repairs were also carried out around the waterpark as part of the works. We're really pleased to be welcoming people back to the Time Capsule. These improvements make visiting the water park a more enjoyable experience for everyone Councillor Geraldine Woods This included new tiles being laid, fixes to the river rapid slides, and new soft rubber flooring being out down in both the Splashdown Island and Coral Cove areas. Even the shower areas have been refreshed to provide a more welcoming space for guests. The upgrades were initially expected to take up to six months. But council chiefs have now revealed that the waterpark will reopen this Friday, on July 19, according to Glasgow Times. I went to France to visit the world's best waterpark Despite the early opening, some parts of the water park are still closed because they are still being worked on. The huge yellow flume and big tipping bucket are still undergoing maintenance. But visitors will be able to use the purple flume when the attraction opens this weekend. Councillor Geraldine Woods, convener of community services, told Glasgow Times: 'We're really pleased to be welcoming people back to the Time Capsule. "These improvements make visiting the water park a more enjoyable experience for everyone. BEST IN SCOTLAND THE Time Capsule attracts over 700,000 visitors each year and remains one of Lanarkshire's most popular attractions. The leisure complex includes a fully equipped gym, an ice rink and a soft play area. And last month it was named on Time Out's list of the UK's top pools. Time Out said: "Glasgow might not be the first location that springs to mind when you think of waterparks, but at the Time Capsule, they have some unique rides. "The Tornado Tantrum flue is so large you could fit a Mini Cooper inside, so there's plenty of room for you and four mates to whizz down together. "There's also a ten-metre-high Storm Chaser: twin flumes named Thunder and Lightning, where you can challenge a friend and see who comes out first." Entry fees range from £3.55 to £6.85 per person. 'Now that the first phase is nearly done, we are delighted to announce that we are once again taking bookings.' It comes a few weeks after bosses at Active NL shared a video on social media giving a sneak peek behind the scenes of the revamp. At the time, they said they were hoping to open sometime this month. In the caption, they added: "It's been a busy few months recharging the Time Capsule waterpark and we are delighted to announce that we anticipate the reopening to be late July. "As we enter the final stages of the most significant upgrade to the waterpark in over 30 years, we're excited to welcome visitors back. "While some of the features such as the tipping bucket won't be in action yet, we are committed to a phased programme of work to restore them." They thanked visitors for their "understanding and patience" during the upgrades phase.

North Lanarkshire Council's Driving Digital Locally Intergenerational Project wins Municipal Journal Achievement Awards honour

The project, which bridges digital divide by offering older residents personalised, one-on-one training sessions with young people, scooped Transforming Lives accolade. North Lanarkshire Council's Driving Digital Locally Intergenerational Project received an impressive honour at the Municipal Journal Achievement Awards 2025. The project bridges the digital divide by offering older residents personalised, one-on-one training sessions with young people, teaching them about digital technology. ‌ It won the Transforming Lives category, sponsored by Roretti, at the UK-wide awards. ‌ Delivered over a four-week period, digital leaders from local primary schools partner with senior residents in the community. Residents and pupils engage in lively discussions about childhood memories and favourite songs. Then, using iPads, the pupils bring these stories to life, creating a vibrant and interactive learning environment. Ninety per cent of the residents who took part reported feeling confident using their new digital skills. They also said they learned much more from the young digital leaders because the atmosphere was fun and relaxed. ‌ Councillor Geraldine Woods, convener of the council's communities committee, said: "We are delighted to win this award. "It is recognition for the team's hard work and dedication, and a testament to their passion and perseverance in supporting our local communities. "Congratulations to everyone involved in this project."

Breastfeeding motion at North Lanarkshire Council meeting passes unanimously

Councillors Geraldine Woods and Fiona Fotheringham marked the anniversary of the Breastfeeding (Scotland) Act, which resulted from a Private Member's Bill presented by former MSP Elaine Smith. A motion passed at a full meeting of North Lanarkshire Council marked the progress made locally with regard to breastfeeding in the 20 years since legislation came into effect. Councillors Geraldine Woods (Labour, Coatbridge South) and Fiona Fotheringham (SNP, Wishaw) marked the anniversary of the Breastfeeding (Scotland) Act, which resulted from a Private Member's Bill presented by former MSP Elaine Smith. ‌ At the meeting Councillor Woods said: 'There can be no better start in life for babies than to get their mother's milk. It is designer made by mums for their baby,' before mentioning numerous health benefits breastfeeding provides to both mother and baby. ‌ Councillor Woods also elaborated on the importance of the 2005 Act, explaining that it made it an offence to attempt to stop a mother from breastfeeding in public. She said challenging this behaviour could undermine the confidence of mothers and put them off breastfeeding, which is dictated by demand from the baby and thus had to be permitted everywhere. Seconding, Councillor Fotheringham said her daughter had been born in 2006, soon after the Act came into effect, and that she had seen a 'massive shift' in how women were empowered to breastfeed, before talking about her experiences with her own children and adding that she had shared stories with many other mothers and acknowledged those who were unable or unwilling to do so. The motion celebrated the fact North Lanarkshire had recently surpassed the 50 per cent milestone for breastfeeding of newborn babies, and congratulated the work of NHS Lanarkshire's Infant Feeding and Maternity Services, as well as those in the council and partner organisations. It also acknowledged that not all mothers are capable of breastfeeding so efforts to promote its benefits must be supportive, non-judgemental, and inclusive. READ MORE: The motion further commended NHS Lanarkshire's maternity services for their collaboration with both North and South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnerships, which earned them the UNICEF Achieving Sustainability Gold Baby Friendly Accreditation and supported participation in World Breastfeeding Week which begins on August 1. ‌ No amendments were presented in relation to this motion so it was carried unanimously.
