Folklorama 2025 kicks off at Assiniboine Park

German pavilion's band is performing on stage, during Folklorama 2025's kick off event. (Harrison Shin/CTV News) It's time for festivity. Folklorama 2025 officially launched Saturday with a vibrant kick-off event at the Lyric Theatre and Field in Assiniboine Park. The celebration was the only opportunity for visitors to see all 43 pavilions and their ambassadors gathered in one place. The event featured ethno-cultural performances, a children's area, food trucks and a pavilion expo. 'It's like having 43 different festivals all over the city — half in the first week, the rest in the second,' said Teresa Cotroneo, executive director of Folklorama. Cotroneo reflected on the festival's growth since its inception. 'It started with 21 pavilions in 1973. We're at 43 this year. From seven days to 14 days. From 71,000 attendees to over 300,000 visits annually,' she said. She added that Folklorama holds a special place in the hearts of many Winnipeggers. 'It's something that's really unique to Winnipeg. We're truly part of the fabric of the community,' Cotroneo said. 'It's important to a lot of people — everyone has a Folklorama story.' The 2025 Folklorama Festival runs from Sunday, Aug. 3 to Saturday, Aug. 16. Pavilions will be hosted across Winnipeg, and attendees are encouraged to consult the festival's travel guide for schedules and locations.

Germany and New Zealand trade on the up as Fieldays provides important business platform

Daly said since then, there had been 'very significant' interest from German companies to invest in New Zealand. 'Germany is New Zealand's fastest-growing export partner: We have seen a 46% increase in trade from New Zealand to Germany in the first 10 months of the European Union-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement going live.' German Deputy Ambassador to New Zealand Winnie Switakowski said German companies perceived New Zealand as a secure place to do business with. 'For Germany, New Zealand is a strong and trusted like-minded partner. The EU-NZ Free Trade Agreement provides additional reliability.' Head of the German delegation to Fieldays, Olaf Schafer, agreed. 'New Zealand is a very important partner for Germany,' he said. 'New Zealand has a very stable economy and works on an extremely high level in the field of bio-economy – it's gold standard. 'There are also lots of similarities in our agriculture, especially regarding the climate and ecological sustainability. 'That's what makes the exchange with New Zealand so rewarding.' Important connections formed Daly said having a presence with the German Pavilion at Fieldays had been 'a great profiling piece' for German businesses. 'All of these companies [exhibiting in the pavilion] were small to medium-size enterprises which normally don't have the budget to do this,' she said. 'If you put them all together under the pavilion, it gives them instant brand recognition. Relationships were made on both ends, Daly said, with the team connecting German businesses to the New Zealand market, and New Zealand businesses to the German market. IFWexpo Heidelberg project manager Gabor Nemet said it had taken four years to get the German Pavilion at Fieldays across the line and now that it happened, the feedback couldn't be better. 'The German exhibitors appreciate the opportunity to understand the New Zealand market better. 'A lot of them even said after one day at Fieldays, they had better and more in-depth conversations with potential clients than they had after five days on some European expos.' Among the 11 German exhibitors in the pavilion was soil and substrate company Floragard. Floragard sales manager Asia Pacific Jonathan Kroiss at the stall within the German Pavilion. Photo / Danielle Zollickhofer Jonathan Kroiss, Floragard's sales manager for Asia/Pacific, said the company would usually participate in gardening-specific expos, but Fieldays had a broader clientele. 'We wanted to find out if there is a market for our products in New Zealand ... It's a comparably small market, but it's all part of a puzzle,' he said. 'There are very interesting trade partners in New Zealand and we were able to make a couple of connections ... The conversations I had were very interesting and highly technical. The people in the field are competent and well-educated. 'We hope to be able to enter the market here soon.' Germany Trade & Invest research analyst ANZ Carola Gilbert was also full of praise for Fieldays and the German Pavilion. 'I was especially impressed by the Innovation Hub and the conversations with businesses on the ground. 'It was a pleasure to present the opportunities that the German market offers ... and I look forward to further connecting with people and businesses.' Fieldays impresses Switakowski said for the German representatives, the concept of Fieldays was unique. 'MPs, CEOs, the economy, politics and the customers all come together. This is a unique opportunity to do business.' The 'uniqueness' of Fieldays was also acknowledged by Schäfer. 'I am impressed, especially by the start-up scene and I take home a lot of interesting ideas, including in the areas of innovation and upscaling. 'For a lot of New Zealand businesses the question is not 'How do we get results from scientific research', but 'How can we make the research results practicable'.' The pavilion had also been successful from a visitor perspective, Switakowski said. 'Lots of people visited the pavilion and told us that they went for a holiday to Germany or that they learned German in high school. 'It was an exchange of lots of little stories of German-New Zealand connections.' The interviews were conducted partly in German, with translation provided by the reporter. Countries' mascots beat drum for Osaka Expo

The 2025 World Exposition will feature a variety of mascots representing participating countries hoping to attract visitors to their pavilions so that they can promote their unique technologies and cultures during the event in Osaka. The designs of some of the mascots are based on the culture of Japan, the host country of the expo, which begins on April 13 and brings together 158 countries and regions. "This will be a fun event that can only be enjoyed in Japan, which is known as a character-driven country," said an official of the organizer. The mascot for Italy's pavilion is called Italia-chan, a young female character wearing a crown that resembles a castle wall. The character is a fusion of Japanese and Italian cultures. Italia-chan wears a kimono decorated with the national flag of Italy and dons a hair ornament with a Japanese cherry blossom. "I wish the character to connect the cultures of the two countries," an official of the Italian pavilion said. The German Pavilion's mascot is Circular, which reflects its theme of a circular economy. The character has a round shape inspired by Japan's kawaii culture, which emphasizes cuteness. A palm-size version of Circular will be distributed in the pavilion. The character will guide visitors through the exhibition in Japanese, German and English. Designed by Simone Legno / via jiji Thailand's mascot for its pavilion is Bhumi-Jai, which has multiple eyes, just like the official expo mascot Myaku-Myaku. The motif of the Thai character came from a legendary monster that has five eyes and four ears. The United Kingdom uses a character called Pix, which bears the colors of the Union Jack — red, blue and white. For Australia, Koko the Koala and Ruby the Roo, inspired by two animals that symbolize the country, represent its pavilion. Japan selected Myaku-Myaku as the expo's mascot in March 2022 after collecting ideas from the public. The character has been used for the expo's promotion actively, including in commercials and posters. Popular characters such as Hello Kitty and Doraemon serve as navigators at the Japan Pavilion sponsored by the Japanese government. "Since having characters that are popular around the world is one of Japan's strengths, we want them to play an important role in the event," said a senior official at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Officials of the U.K. Pavilion said they understand that Japan loves characters. German Pavilion officials said they want to learn from Japan's expertise with characters. "We want people to enjoy the difference of each country's mascot." Ahead of its opening, a rehearsal is being held at the expo's venue on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka, this weekend. The event is open to businesses and international stakeholders on Friday, while Osaka residents who have been invited will participate on Saturday and Sunday. Approximately 90,000 people are expected to attend the rehearsal over the three days. Participants have been assigned specific time slots and transportation methods as a crowd-control measure. Pavilions and restaurants will operate as they will be during the actual event. About 20 out of 42 pavilions that various countries have set up will open for the trial run.
