Steelers insider predicts bad news on Terry Bradshaw having his number retired
Terry Bradshaw is one of the greatest Steelers QBs of all time — and to honor the four Super Bowls he won with Pittsburgh, no other player has donned his legendary No. 12 since he left. However, the number isn't officially retired — and insider Gerry Dulac recently stated it may take a while. During Wednesday's Steelers chat on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Dulac was asked for an update on when Pittsburgh will retire Bradshaw's No. 12 — and the Steelers insider provided some bad news: Advertisement "I don't think it's happening anytime soon." His pessimism is founded in reality, however, as only three Steelers have had their jerseys officially retired: Ernie Stautner, 'Mean' Joe Greene, and the late, great Franco Harris. Stautner joined the Steelers in 1950 — playing in 173 games over his 14 years with Pittsburgh — and his contributions to the Steel City earned him the honor of having his No. 70 jersey retired in 1964. Arguably one of the greatest defensive linemen in NFL history, Greene's 181 games with Pittsburgh over a 13-year span earned his No. 75 the distinction of being the second number retired, in 2014. Harris was the third and most recent Steeler to have his number honored for eternity — as his No. 32 was retired on the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception in 2022. All three of these Steelers legends were honored with having their numbers officially retired — but Bradshaw will likely have to settle for the unofficial recognition for the time being. Advertisement Should any other Steelers legends have their jerseys retired — and if so, who should be next after Bradshaw gets his turn? Steelers Are Lying About Trading T.J. Watt, Hints Mike Florio
Steelers Are Lying About Trading T.J. Watt, Hints Mike Florio originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers position on opting to dump unhappy superstar pass-rusher T.J. Watt in a trade seems pretty clear to us. Advertisement The work needs to be done regarding Watt's desire for a lucrative contract extension. ... maybe a desire as grand as $40 million per year. The Steelers are making it perfectly clear that while they might not like the "$40 million'' part, they agree with where the efforts need to point. "(Expletive) no'' was the answer coming out of the building earlier this week on the subject of a blockbuster trade-away of Watt. And now Steelers team insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is echoing that, as during a Tuesday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" he used a pair of forceful three-word phrases to state the club's position. Advertisement Pittsburgh trading Watt isn't "on the radar,'' he asserted. A trade is "not gonna happen,'' he added. Dulac also added a timetable to the proceedings, saying he believes Watt will sign an extension "sometime between" the Steelers' preseason finale at the Carolina Panthers (that game is on Aug. 21) and Pittsburgh's Week 1 regular-season matchup at the New York Jets (that game is on Sept. 7). "The Steelers want to and believe they will sign T.J. Watt," Dulac said. Dulac is plugged-in and on the beat. Yet ... now along comes Mike Florio of who has a habit of offering unwanted advice to teams and players and non-sourced info to his audience. Advertisement And Florio isn't just failing to buy what the Steelers (and reputable Pittsburgh media people) are saying. He's sort of calling them liars. "NFL Media pushed the idea that they have no intention to trade T.J. Watt, which is often the precursor to a trade," Florio claimed during a Wednesday appearance on Pittsburgh sports radio station 93.7 The Fan. Florio is right about how real teams and real reporters choose their words wisely - and the reason is not because "everybody is a liar.'' This is a never-say-never league. Most trained and experienced reporters recognize that and therefore wisely leave ajar the door in the event of change. Advertisement That's an ancient art now in the world of clickbait journalism, where headlines must be forceful and loud and definitive ... even if the reporter's information isn't definitive at all. There is no reason to think the Pittsburgh media is fibbing about what its been told and there is no reason to think the Steelers are covering up some secret plot to trade one of their all-time greatest players. If this thing blows up, that will be driven by a number of factors. But a deceitful conspiracy won't likely be one of them. T.J. Watt and Steelers Engage in Ugly Exchange Per Report
T.J. Watt and Steelers Engage in Ugly Exchange Per Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. How badly are contract talks going between the Pittsburgh Steelers and T.J. Watt? So badly — according to one report — that the two sides have exchanged face-to-face insults regarding which side is "fortunate'' to be associated with the other. Advertisement By now, NFL fans all understand the essentials here. Watt and the Steelers are at odds over which direction their contract negotiations should go. Does Watt deserve a contract extension? Fine. At age 31, should the Steelers be happy to break the bank over a long-term contract? Less than fine. The superstar EDGE and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year is entering the final season of his deal in 2025 and has been holding out as he seeks an extension from the team. A fair number is certainly over $30 million APY. But Watt's reported demand blows that number out of the water. During an appearance on the "Rich Eisen Show" on Tuesday, insider Gerry Dulac, who covers the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, said Watt wants nothing less than to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Advertisement "The stalemate is going to be that T.J. Watt wants to be the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league," Dulac said. That means Watt is seeking a deal worth over $40 million annually. Enter another report from a local media person, as in appearing on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, NFL insider Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports shared details on an exchange that reportedly took place ... and got ugly. 'T.J. Watt was openly told, 'You're fortunate to be a Steeler,'' Kinkhabwala alleged. 'And his response was, 'You're fortunate to have me.'' Kinkhabwala continued ... 'The Steelers' attitude, the Steelers' mindset ... is that it is such a privilege to be in this uniform, to wear this uniform,' Kinkhabwala said. 'That, therefore, you should take a hometown discount just because you get to play for one of these cornerstone trademark organizations.' Advertisement We wonder if Aditi is sort of paraphrasing here. But if this is even close to being literally accurate? It means these two sides presently have more separating them that money. Insiders say Steelers' Minkah Fitzpatrick trade talks began months ago
The Steelers shocked the NFL by trading Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Dolphins in exchange for Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, and a late-round pick swap — but insiders suggest his Steel City exit had been brewing behind the scenes for some time. According to insider Jeremy Fowler on social media, Fitzpatrick was the subject of "trade whispers" starting as early as last March — stemming from his noticeable decline over the past few years. In a separate social media post, insider Gerry Dulac stated that the Steelers weren't seeking out trade partners for Fitzpatrick, but they were listening to offers. He added that Fitzpatrick's lack of splash plays over the past two seasons played a part in the Steelers' decision to trade him — as it became difficult to justify his current salary. Over the past two seasons with Pittsburgh, Fitzpatrick produced just one interception — a far cry from the 17 interceptions he accumulated during his first four years as a Steeler. Advertisement Splash plays aside, Fitzpatrick played a vital role in coverage with his ability to blanket the field — making him difficult for the Steelers to replace, but not impossible. Steelers' T.J. Watt gets $123 million contract update after Jalen Ramsey-Minkah Fitzpatrick trade
The Pittsburgh Steelers are staying busy, and in the process, they may be putting off the inevitable. T.J. Watt still needs a contract extension. And the superstar pass rusher has a specific goal in mind. Advertisement Here's how Steelers beat reporter Gerry Dulac puts it: "The stalemate is going to be that T.J. Watt wants to be the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league. And the Steelers are looking at it that he's age 31. In order to accommodate any kind of large contract, it can't be a three-year deal, it has to be a five-year deal because you need to spread the money out." MORE: The chances are increasing of a T.J. Watt trade from the Steelers There are a couple of layers to this. The first is the guaranteed money, for which Browns' edge rusher Myles Garrett is tops at his position at $123 million. Advertisement Then you've got annual average value, for which Garrett has $40 million per year and Ja'Marr Chase has $40.5 million per year. In total value, Watt could also shoot for Garrett's $160 million in his recent extension, but if he's going for five years at a similar value, you're getting up near $200 million. That might be a tough pill for the Steelers to swallow given Watt's age and his relative decline in 2024. But to keep him around and happy, the checkbook probably has to be swung wide open.
