Global governance needs reforms: PM
Accra (Ghana): Asserting that the global order created after World War II was changing fast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the changing circumstances demand 'credible and effective reforms in global governance'. Addressing Ghana's Parliament, Modi said the revolution in technology, rise of Global South and shifting demographics are contributing to the pace and scale of this change. He announced that India has decided to elevate ties with the African nation to 'comprehensive partnership'. 'We support Africa's development framework to secure a bright and sustainable future…Together, we will shape a future full of promises and progress,' Modi told Ghanian parliamentarians. Modi also dedicated the national honour of Ghana, conferred upon him a day ago, to enduring friendship and shared values that bind the two countries. In his address, Modi underscored that the people of India have resolved to make the country a developed nation by 2047 and said that a strong India will contribute to a more stable and prosperous world. This is Modi's first bilateral visit to Ghana, and he has thus become the first Indian PM to visit the country in three decades. Ghana President John Mahama had made a trip to India in 2015 for the India-Africa Forum Summit. Earlier in the day, the PM paid homage at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park dedicated Ghana's founding President, who is a revered leader of the African independence movement. Modi was accompanied by Ghana's Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as he laid a wreath at the memorial of the first prime minister and later the first president of the West African nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the Ghanaian parliament, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to address the parliament of one of Africa's growing economies in three decades. India and Ghana signed several pacts during PM Modi's visit spanning sectors like research and development (R&D), medicine and cultural exchange. Prime Minister Modi also paid respects at the memorial of Kwame Nkrumah and was presented with the Guard Of Honour. He thanked the people of Ghana in his speech and said the people of India thank them for bestowing their highest civilian honour on him. 'Earlier today, I had the honour of paying tribute to our visionary and statesman and the beloved son of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He once said that the forces that unite us are greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart. His words continue to guide our shared journey," he said. He said India has welcomed everyone who has come the country and said that allowed Indians to integrate so well with Ghanian society, referring to Indian diaspora in Ghana. With PM visiting Ghana, Cong recalls Nkrumah-Nehru ties
Modi embarked on a five-nation visit to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia from July 2 to 9, this morning. New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) With Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarking on a visit to Ghana, the Congress on Wednesday recalled the very warm relationship between former Ghanaian president Kwame Nkrumah and India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, 'Super Premium Frequent Flier PM is in Ghana today. Till the mid-60s, Ghanian and indeed African politics was dominated by Kwame Nkrumah, who is an iconic figure. He shared a very warm relationship with Jawaharlal Nehru, which long pre-dated Ghana's independence in March 1957.' A prominent road in Accra on which India House is located is named after Nehru, while the diplomatic enclave in New Delhi has a Kwame Nkrumah Marg, Ramesh pointed out. 'Nkrumah visited India from December 22, 1958 to January 8, 1959. He was in New Delhi, Mumbai, Nangal, Chandigarh, Jhansi, Agra, Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Pune. He spent five days in Bengaluru and Mysuru alone,' the Congress leader recalled. Nkumah paid special visits to the Trombay Atomic Energy Establishment, the National Physical Laboratory, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, the Bhakra Nangal Dam, and the National Defence Academy, Ramesh said. One offshoot of this extended visit was Indian assistance for the establishment of the Ghanaian Air Force, Ramesh said. A few years earlier, Nehru had inaugurated the Department of African Studies at Delhi University before the decolonisation of the continent had begun, Ramesh recalled. 'Speaking on the occasion on Aug 5, 1955 he (Nehru) had said: it is so obviously necessary and desirable for people in India to study Africa, and not merely, as the Vice Chancellor said, because it is there…But you ignore the study of Africa at your peril. 'It is of the most urgent importance for us to understand Africa…and her problems and her people more particularly… When I think of Aftica, many ideas come to me…I have a tremendous feeling of atonement of humanity…the way Africa and the people of Africa have been treated for hundreds of years, a kind of feeling that the rest of humanity would perform 'prayashchit' for it,' Ramesh quoted Nehru as saying. Ramesh also shared archival footage from Nkrumah's visit to India and he being received by Nehru at the airport. Nkrumah was also the first prime minister of Ghana and then served as the president. He was the PM of Ghana when he visited India In his departure statement, Modi said that at the invitation of Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, he will be there on July 2 and 3. 'Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States. I look forward to my exchanges aimed at further deepening our historical ties and opening up new windows of cooperation, including in the areas of investment, energy, health, security, capacity building and development partnership,' Modi said. As fellow democracies, it will be an honour to speak at the Parliament of Ghana, he added. PTI ASK DV DV This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Transfer news, rumors: Eze to Arsenal, Kudus to Spurs
The transfer news and rumors just keep on coming across the Premier League, with so many talented players linked with massive clubs. MORE — List of Premier League confirmed ins and outs for summer 2025 Below we take a look at the latest transfer news and rumors from across the league. Arsenal in 'contact' over Eze deal A report from Fabrizio Romano says that Arsenal have 'made contact' with Eberechi Eze's representatives about a move from Crystal Palace this summer and that 'contacts are taking place for Crystal Palace star with Arsenal informed on deal conditions.' It is believed that Eze has a release clause of $93 million that can be paid in installments and that is a very good price for a 27-year-old England international who has proven himself as one of the best playmakers in the Premier League outside of the 'big six' clubs. Eze has attracted interest from plenty of other clubs this summer, including Spurs, and this now feels like the right time for him to make the step up to a Champions League club. Eze would be perfect to start on the left wing for Arsenal and cut inside and cause chaos centrally. That is something that have on the right with Bukayo Saka but both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have struggled to deliver consistently. Eze won't have that problem and Arsenal have shown they don't mind spending big on an established, proven Premier League star. Spurs switch attention to Kudus With the likes of Bryan Mbeumo reportedly preferring a move to Manchester United and Eze looking like he could be heading to Arsenal, it appears that new Spurs boss Thomas Frank still has plenty of other options to add to his attack. A report from The Daily Telegraph says that Spurs want to sign Mohammed Kudus from West Ham. The Ghanian winger, 24, has shown flashes of brilliance at West Ham over the last two years since his arrival from Ajax. It feels like if he can be put in the right spot in the right team he will be very successful. Frank's tactics would suit Kudus well and this seems like a great deal for Kudus, if Spurs and West Ham can agree on a deal. That could be tough as the clubs are big rivals and haven't done business for some time, while West Ham fans won't be happy with one of their main attacking talents going to a bitter rival.
