Karnataka engineering student steals gold-plated ornaments worth over Rs5L from Pune store, held

Pune: All that glitters is not gold. A second-year engineering student (19) from Karnataka learnt this the hard way following his arrest on the charge of stealing jewellery — which turned out to be plated with gold — from a store in the city's Sadashiv Peth area. The Vishrambaug police on Thursday said the student from Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), about 90km from Bengaluru, stole the gold-plated jewellery worth Rs5 lakh from the Sadashiv Peth store on July 7. A police team, led by senior inspector Santosh Pandhare and inspector Arun Ghodke, arrested him on Tuesday from his village and recovered the jewellery from his grandparents' house. Pandhare said investigation revealed that the student wanted to make some quick money and came to Pune on July 4 in search of a jewellery store. "He conducted a recce of several shops in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, before zeroing in on the store in Sadashiv Peth," he said. CCTV footage showed that he visited several jewellery stores after reaching Pune. On the night of July 7, he entered the jewellery store in Sadashiv Peth by climbing the building and breaking open a washroom window. Once inside, he stole the ornaments." He said: "After the store owner approached us with the complaint, we studied CCTV footage of the area. We found that the boy walked towards Dandekar bridge, from where he hired a cab. We tracked down the cab that had dropped him in the Navale Bridge area. We got to know that he paid the cab fare through an UPI application. The transaction revealed his identity as we found his phone number." The police said the student subsequently returned to KGF and began looking for prospective buyers of the stolen jewellery. "He was brought to Pune on Wednesday and produced before a city court that remanded him in police custody till July 19," Ghodke said.

UBT deputy chief and six others booked for assault and robbery

Nashik: Bhadrakali police have filed a case of robbery, assault, and rioting against Sena UBT deputy leader and six others following an alleged attack on a jeweller's home in Kathe Galli. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, which reportedly stemmed from a social media video posted by the victim. The jeweller, Kishor alias Gaju Ghodke, had uploaded a video on social media on June 26 accusing the UBT functionary of financial misappropriation. In retaliation, six individuals allegedly stormed into Ghodke's residence on Monday at 1am by breaking down the door and ransacking the house. Ghodke claims he was assaulted with sharp weapons, iron pipes and bricks, resulting in property damage estimated at Rs4 lakh. The attackers stole a 25-gram gold chain (worth Rs2 lakh) and Rs1 lakh from his home. The accused also reportedly threatened him with dire consequences. An officer from Bhadrakali police said they have arrested two individuals — Lakhan Donde and Lakhan Zurdya. "We met commissioner of police Sandeep Karnik in this regard and brought to his notice that Ghodke is a criminal on police record. For the past many years he has been maligning the image of well-known political and social personalities on social media," he said. "By uploading videos on social media, the complainant blackmails builders and traders. On behalf of the party, we have requested Karnik to take strict action against Ghodke," he added.
