1 2 Mohali: In a celebration steeped in tradition and devotion, Bharata Nritya Kendra hosted Salangai Poojai ceremony for six of its young Bharatanatyam disciples under the tutelage of Ranjani Seshadri . Held at main auditorium, lecture hall complex, IISER, Mohali, the event marked a sacred milestone as the dancers donned their Salangai (Ghungroo) for the first time — a symbolic initiation into the classical art form. The disciples — Anahita, Anaya, Bhadra, Bavadharini, Roopkatha, and Sohini — offered their devotion to Lord Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, in a soulful and solemn ceremony that resonated with divine rhythm and spiritual fervour. The guests included Suchitra Mitra, veteran Bharatanatyam artist and recipient of Uday Shankar and Shiromani awards; Raji Pramod Shrivastava, special chief secretary, Punjab govt; and S P Rajasekaran, general secretary, Chandigarh Tamil Sangam. The dignitaries applauded the dedication of the students and the efforts of the kendra in preserving and promoting India's classical dance heritage. Salangai Poojai is a revered tradition in bharatanatyam, signifying a dancer's readiness to embark on a disciplined journey of practice, performance, and spiritual growth. The ceremony began with the ritual sanctification of the anklets, followed by invocations and blessings from the guru and the invited dignitaries. The event stood as a celebration of devotion, discipline, and the timeless elegance of bharatanatyam, leaving the audience moved and inspired.
