5 Best First Steps for New Investors, According to Self-Taught Pros
Everyone knows that the best way to start something is to start something. Still, we are cautious to begin a process when we aren't sure what we're doing and what the outcome will be. When it comes to investing, beginners tend to overthink things because of the value people place on money and the stigma attached losing it. As the host of 'The Personal Finance Podcast,' Andrew Giancola invited self-taught pros Dave Ahern and Andrew Sather — the team behind the popular 'Investing for Beginners' podcast and website — to his podcast to talk about trading basics and the psychology behind investing. Read Next: Learn More: Here are five best first steps for a beginner investor, as discussed by Sather, Ahearn and Giancola, and what simple actions you can take along the way to gain experience. 'First of all, you need to have your ducks in a row … You basically have to have your foundation set,' Ahern said. Only a fool should start investing with too much debt and too little saved in an emergency fund. An emergency fund acts as a buffer against unexpected expenses like job loss, medical emergencies, or unexpected home, car or travel expenses. Three to six months' worth of savings is the rule of thumb, but it will depend on your lifestyle, monthly costs, income and dependents, per Wells Fargo. It suggested storing the funds in a bank account that earns interest. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, save what you can until you feel comfortable jumping into investing. Check Out: When starting out, you need to decide how much time you want to devote to investing and how interested you are in the learning process. Do you want to be a hands-on stock picker or passively invest via index funding or exchange-traded fund investing? Or, if you have sufficient funds but don't care to be actively participating, would you rather let someone invest for you? Deciding your commitment level will help control your emotional investment, according to Ahern. Sather described investing as a 'lifelong journey,' but many beginner investors get frustrated with tracking short-term inconsistencies and their effort not paying off in results. 'If you can set the right type of goals in place, that helps shift your mindset and put things in perspective so you don't get discouraged too much when you don't feel like you're making progress,' he said. If you're constantly looking at progress charts on your phone, Giancola suggested turning your device horizontally, so you can see a longer timeline and the upward trajectory most stocks will show. If you concentrate too much on the ups and downs every day, you'll drive yourself mad. And if you end up panic-selling during a down time, you could even lose money. According to Forbes, panic-selling can cause investors to lock in losses and miss the market's highest days. New investors can be forgiven for watching their brokerage accounts every day; however, at some point, you're going to have to conquer the fear or greed that's making you be so attentive. You're not going to win on every single investment you make, so the quicker you can learn to have an investor's patient mind, the better. Ahern suggested removing financial apps or stock tickers from your phone completely. Doing so causes 'a speedbump,' he said. 'It makes it harder for you to sit down at your computer, log in to your account, and, you know, make a decision to buy or sell something.' It's a good way to control your emotions. You can't learn everything right off the bat, so don't beat yourself up over something like losing a few dollar on a wonky stock pick. The abundance of information and opinions available to the newcomer is overwhelming, but patience and predictability will serve your long-term investment strategy well. People equate 'predictable' with 'boring,' but when it comes to growing your money, being predictable means that you're starting good saving and investing habits. 'At the end of the day, it's how much money can you save and invest and put in,' Sather said. 'So, that means spending less than you make and setting habits like dollar-cost averaging to put money to work for you.' Once you've established some of these first steps, experiential learning will dictate what tweaks and risks you'll can take moving forward. 'You don't have to pick the next Google or the next Amazon to be successful in the stock market,' Ahern explained. 'I think you just need to really understand that it's not going to be a fast game. If you're looking to get rich quick, the stock market is not the place to do it.' Jersey Shore's Sammi 'Sweetheart' on having ex Ronnie at gender reveal party
She's not that sweet. 'Jersey Shore: Family Vacation' star Samantha 'Sammi Sweetheart' Giancola is setting the record straight on the guest list at her gender reveal — she did not invite her ex Ronnie Ortiz-Magro. 'Umm, that wasn't my choice,' she told The Post. Advertisement 'It was basically like, he is part of the cast and I didn't really have a choice with that.' Giancola, 38, had an on-and-off again relationship with Ortiz-Magro, 39, her 'Jersey Shore' co-star, from Season 1 of the original series, which began in 2009, until the couple officially called it quits in 2014. 4 Samantha Giancola's gender reveal, which will be shown on the next season of 'Jersey Shore: Family Vacation,' was held in Seaside Heights. Getty Images for MTV Advertisement After a decade apart, she came face to face with her former flame on the MTV show's spinoff 'Jersey Shore: Family Vacation' last year — and has accepted that filming with him is part of the TV gig. 'He's just a part of the group and I'm not going to exclude him, like if he's there, he's there,' said Giancola, who is engaged to former Karma bartender Justin May. The reality star, who chronicled her IVF journey on the show, already knew she was expecting a boy prior to the reveal — which took place last month in Seaside Heights and will be shown on the next season of 'Family Vacation.' 4 The reality star announced her engagement to Justin May in April of 2024. Sammi Sweetheart/ Instagram Advertisement 'When you go through IVF and you have embryos and you get them genetically tested, you do have the option to see what they are sexwise,' she explained. 'So I just knew when we put in the best embryo that we could … what the sex was because I looked, it was right next to it. But people do not have to know that. I just knew what we had.' The Hazlet, NJ native went through 'multiple' rounds of fertility treatments, and admitted that she considered giving up. 'It's very hard when you're in the thick of it and things are not working out the way that you want them to. You almost are like, 'I don't know if I can go through this again,' because it definitely takes its toll mentally and physically on your body.' Advertisement 4 Giancola's 'Jersey Shore' castmates attended her bridal shower at Clarizio's Italian Ristorante in Freehold. Samantha Giancola The mom-to-be, who is due in August, also dished on the food she's been craving most during her pregnancy. 'My thing is dino nuggets. I would never eat that prior,' she said. 'I like to say I'm a pretty healthy person, but now that I'm pregnant … everything fried and gross, like everything that's not good for you, I crave.' She's been having a yen for sweets too, and as luck would have it, her co-star Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino just became the co-owner of Bang Cookies. 'He's been sending me cookies and I've been obsessed with them. I can't get enough,' she said. As for baby names, the couple doesn't have one picked out for their little one just yet — so guests at Giancola's baby shower, which was held at Clarizio's Italian Ristorante in Freehold earlier this month — were asked to help. 4 Spencer's gifted Giancola's son his own duck phone. Samantha Giancola Advertisement 'I even did a little station that was name suggestions because we just have no idea what we're gonna name this baby,' she confessed. Besides filming 'Family Vacation,' Giancola is planning her wedding and opening a second location of her clothing store Sweetheart Coast in Atlantic City, so hasn't had time to set up the baby's nursery. 'I'm so far behind. I just feel like I've been so busy,' she told The Post. 'There's getting ready for a baby, wedding planning. I have two stores on top of filming. So there's just a lot going on right now.' Advertisement Although his room may not be ready yet, Giancola's little meatball already has a piece of 'Jersey Shore' merch to decorate it with. 'Spencer's just came out with a whole bunch of 'Jersey Shore' stuff,' she explained. 'So we went to Spencer's corporate the other day and I got a stuffed animal duck phone for the baby's nursery.'

Scott Co. chemical spray potentially puts kids, foliage at risk
The Brief Neighbors in St. Lawrence Township watched hundreds of trees and bushes die after witnessing a chemical sprayed onto their property in August 2024. Afterward, they discovered the township's weed control plan included spraying chemicals onto their property, though they say they were never notified. Some of the chemicals used are toxic to humans and animals. Damages to trees and bushes are estimated at $560,000, and neighbors are worried about health impacts on their children and pets. SCOTT CO., Minn. (FOX 9) - Hundreds of trees and bushes have died in a Scott County neighborhood where the local government had chemicals sprayed to clear the right-of-way. Dangerous direction Neighbors in St. Lawrence Township are fighting to find out why they were sprayed with the chemicals, and whether their animals and children are in danger. Pete Giancola gets pretty upset driving through his rural Scott County neighborhood. Last summer, he and a few neighbors realized the St. Lawrence Township weed control strategy included spreading potentially dangerous chemicals onto their properties. "All of those orange marks are all of the dead trees that absorbed the chemicals," Giancola said as he drove past dozens of orange marks. "One of my favorite dogs died, like, literally overnight." No control The township wanted to address weeds in the right-of-way, hiring a chemical company in the process. But dead flora and fauna indicate they sprayed all the way past the right-of-way into Pete Giancola's property, where it killed this tree and dozens more. The spraying caught Lana Plashchynskaya by surprise just down the block from Giancarlo, and she tried to stop it. "I had five horses out there within mere feet from where the chemical was landing," she said. Downplaying damage The video she recorded shows a worker who stopped and pulled away, but then he had a conversation with Township Chair Ted Kornder and got right back to it as Kornder downplayed the dangers. "It does not totally kill your tree," he told Plashchynskaya. "It keeps the branches from encroaching out into the road." But almost immediately, trees and bushes started dying on properties belonging to Plashchynskaya, Giancola and John Slavic. "All the wild grapes are dead," said John Slavic. "The sumac trees that I planted are dead." Chemical concerns All three neighbors maintain their own right-of-way, mowing it and keeping shrubs away. Despite that, they found out the township has been spraying twice a year for quite some time, but they say they've never been notified. They spent months trying to get answers about what chemicals were used – Vastlan, Nu Farm Polaris, Dupont Export, and Terravue – and when they found out, they were shocked to read about the risks. "It can cause crystallization of lung tissue and respiratory distress," Giancola said of one of the chemicals. "And now they're coming on to our properties with toxic herbicides without notification." Health impacts Giancola suspects the chemicals killed his dog, Crosby, and he's worried about the impact on his daughter, Kaylee, who is in a coma. Plashchynskaya talked to us on Friday while her daughter was hospitalized with respiratory problems. "It just blows my mind that this has been happening behind my back," Slavic said. An arborist estimated the damage at more than $500,000, but the neighbors may need to sue to get any restitution. FOX 9 gave city leaders and the company that sprayed the chemicals a couple of days to respond to the accusations, but they have not returned messages or emails.
