Gilas Pilipinas Women hold off Lebanon for first win in FIBA Asia Cup
Gilas Pilipinas squandered a double-digit lead, but showed poise in the endgame to gut out a 73-70 win against Lebanon in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup on Wednesday in China. The Filipinas thus barged into the win column of the continental tournament with a 1-2 card while Lebanon ended the group stage winless at 0-3. More importantly, the Philippines will remain in Division A while Lebanon will take on the last-seeded team in the other group in the battle for seventh place, where the loser will be relegated to Division B. The Philippines has also secured a spot in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments as it is already assured to finish within the top six of the ongoing Asia Cup. Jack Animam picked up where she left off, detonating for a huge double-double effort of 14 points and 16 rebounds to go with five assists and three steals while young gun Naomi Panganiban top-scored with 15 markers laced with four boards, three dimes, and one steal. Gilas started off hot with Animam completing a three-point play that brought the Filipinas to a 29-12 lead at the end of the opening frame, but Lebanon put on a huge second quarter barrage that sliced Gilas' lead to just four at the break, 41-37. Lebanon continued to lean on Jillian Archer and Rebcca Akl in the third as they regained a slim 57-55 cushion before heading to the crucial fourth period. Gilas then proved it is not a one-woman show with the likes of Sumayah Sugapong, Vanessa de Jesus, and Kacey Dela Rosa sparking a 6-0 run to open the payoff period. Animam scored back-to-back baskets before Dela Rosa completed a layup off an offensive rebound and assist from Panganiban, 67-62. Lebanon responded with two quick points, but Gilas turned to Dela Rosa and Sugapong anew as the two created a 71-66 separation in the final 1:50. Dela Rosa would foul out and Lebanon took advantage of it, sinking four straight free throws to trim their deficit to just a point with 29 ticks left to play, 71-70. Panganiban showed composure at the stripe, calmly knocking down the game-winning freebies as Gilas kept its title contention alive. Gilas will next take on the second-seeded team in Group A on Friday, where the winner will earn a semifinals berth. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Gilas Pilipinas begins FIBA Asia Cup build-up, but Cone not expecting full attendance yet
Gilas Pilipinas will hit the ground running in its preparation for the upcoming 2025 FIBA Asia Cup with head coach Tim Cone convening the national team starting today at the Upper Deck in Pasig. But the multi-titled tactician isn't expecting to have a full attendance on the first day of practice, especially since most of the players are either not in the country yet or are still suiting up for their mother teams in the ongoing PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. The Monday practice will mark the national team's first meeting one month before the Asia Cup slated on August 5 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. "It's not going to be a heavy, long practice, obviously. I'm not even sure if everybody is going to show up, especially the guys in the playoffs," Cone said on Sunday after steering Barangay Ginebra to a Game 6 win over San Miguel in the semifinals. "We got a Game 7 on Wednesday so asking the guys to come to practice is kind of hard." Most of the members of the Gilas pool are currently in the PBA playoffs with Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, Troy Rosario, and Jamie Malonzo playing for Cone's Gin Kings, who dragged the San Miguel Beermen to a do-or-die Game 7 on Wednesday. The Beermen, meanwhile, also have active Gilas players in June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez. National team gunner Calvin Oftana is also still with a TNT tem that had already clinched a ticket to the finals to keep its bid for a Grand Slam alive. Meanwhile, several other players are still overseas. Justin Brownlee and AJ Edu expected to arrive soon from the United States while Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo are currently in the US and South Korea, respectively. "Like I said, I don't even know who's showing up at this point. We're grasping at straws just like we did tonight in terms of trying to figure out how to get practices," Cone added. "But if we can get a core of six or seven or eight guys, that would be good for now." Gilas is in Group D of the Asia Cup alongside New Zealand, Iraq, and Chinese Taipei. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Gilas Pilipinas to play Macau Black Bears in tuneup match ahead of FIBA Asia Cup
Gilas Pilipinas will get to test its mettle before flying to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the FIBA Asia Cup as the national team is set to face the Macau Black Bears in a friendly game on July 28 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The tuneup game will serve as Gilas' last match before taking on several powerhouse teams in the continental tilt. 'Playing tuneup games before Gilas dives into the FIBA Asia Cup will only help the team out,' said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio. 'While the team gets good competition, it's also an opportunity for our Gilas fans to band together and send their team off before they fly out to Saudi Arabia. It's a short preparation window as many of our players saw action in the semifinals of the Philippine Cup, which was another reason why the SBP wanted Gilas to have a tuneup game here.' Led by head coach Garrett Kelly, the Black Bears have wealthy experiences playing in the international stage, competing in East Asia Super League and in The Asian Tournament. Its core is bannered by locals from Macau, mixed heritage players, and imports. Against them, Gilas head coach Tim Cone is expected to field a full-force lineup to further gear up for the Asia Cup. 'They beat the Chinese national team. They are really strong. They've got good imports. It could be a very interesting friendly for us,' Cone said of Macau's 83-78 win last July. Gilas is grouped with New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, and Iraq in the Asia Cup slated from August 5 to 17. —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News
