Dortmund interested in £35m Chelsea star as Jamie Gittens transfer gets closer

Chelsea are reportedly closing in on signing Jamie Gittens, while Borussia Dortmund want to buy a £35million-rated Stamford Bridge star. It is no secret that Enzo Maresca wants to bring in a new left-winger this summer with Gittens emerging as the top target. They tried to sign the 20-year-old Englishman before the Club World Cup but while personal terms have been agreed, Dortmund rejected Chelsea's £42m bid. Both club and player are determined to make the move a reality and positive talks have been held between the two sides, with Sky Sports reporting that a deal is getting closer and the transfer 'very likely'. However, any business won't take place until the conclusion of the Club World Cup with both the Blues and Dortmund through to the round-of-16. But it has also been reported that the Bundesliga giants have stepped up their interest in Chelsea's highly-rated teenage defender Josh Acheampong. The Independent report Inter Milan, Newcastle United and Tottenham are also eyeing up the 19-year-old who made his full Premier League debut in January. Acheampong made 12 appearances across all competitions last season, helping his boyhood club win the Conference League, with Maresca singling him out for praise on numerous occasions. Capable of playing at centre-back or right-back, he started Chelsea's latest Club World Cup game – a 3-0 win over ES Tunis on Wednesday. It is said Acheampong wants more first-team opportunities but it remains to be seen whether or not the Blues will let him leave having already rejected several loan offers. But the report adds that Chelsea could be willing to let their promising star go for £35m and could be happy to do business with Dortmund if all goes smoothly with the Gittens transfer. More Trending For now, Acheampong is hoping to feature when Chelsea take on Benfica on Saturday night in Charlotte, saying: 'It's important the manager has faith in me. It means I get to play – and I'm very happy to have played [against ES Tunis]. 'Benfica are a really big club, but every game in this competition is hard. So while we need to focus on the opponent, the most important thing is that we focus on ourselves. 'It [the Club World Cup] is really exciting. We're into the knockouts now and every single game is important. We just have to keep winning.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Borussia Dortmund explain Gittens absence as Chelsea transfer talks continue

Borussia Dortmund were without Jamie Gittens as they beat Ulsan 1-0 at the Club World Cup as discussions remain ongoing about the 20-year-old potentially joining Chelsea Jamie Gittens missed Borussia Dortmund's 1-0 win over Ulsan at the Club World Cup on Wednesday, with Chelsea looking to sign the winger. Gittens has already agreed personal terms and reports have suggested that Chelsea are close to finalising a deal with Dortmund. And Gittens' absence from the Dortmund squad as they defeated Ulsan in Cincinnati fuelled suggestions that the move is all but done. However, Dortmund boss Niko Kovac insisted ahead of the game that Gittens only missed the game through illness. ‌ Explaining his team selection, Kovac said: "Marcel Sabitzer has had a bit of trouble with his knee. He took a knock and has therefore trained a bit less – today he participated in parts of team training again. ‌ "We'll have to see how things are for him tomorrow. The only one who won't be involved is Jamie Gittens. We left him in Fort Lauderdale because he's sick." Despite Kovac's comments, German newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten have claimed that Gittens was not involved because a move to Chelsea is 'imminent' and the suggestion that he is ill is actually a 'cover story'. The Blues did attempt to sign Gittens ahead of the Club World Cup, but they failed to meet Dortmund's asking price. However, Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl did admit earlier this month that they remained "in good dialogue" with the Blues. "There was contact with Chelsea FC, who got in touch again yesterday afternoon," Kehl said. "We spoke again on the phone and exchanged expectations and different ideas. In the end, we didn't come to an agreement because we have different ideas about the player's current value. "But the talks were very, very respectful. We have been in very good dialogue with Chelsea for many years. We are happy Jamie will now be part of our team at the Club World Cup and are delighted he is staying. ‌ "I'm not responsible for the late offer - but, of course, I still have to deal with it and that's what we've done. We looked into it very seriously, but in the end we also made a decision for ourselves. "It's still absolutely OK that Chelsea made this attempt. And, once again, we are in good dialogue. Let's see how things develop in the future."

In October, at 20 years and 75 days old, Gittens became the youngest English player to score against Real Madrid in the Champions League. And only four months prior in June, he was starring in the Champions League final for the German side against Real, coming on as a late substitute for Jadon Sancho. In many ways Gittens is a spiritual successor to Sancho. Advertisement BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Gittens started his career at local side Caversham Trents before he was picked up by Reading aged seven, while also spending some time with Chelsea. At Under-9 level he stayed with Reading before the Blues and Arsenal showed interest in him at Under-14 level, but he chose to snub both and join Manchester City. 15 year old Jamie Bynoe-Gittens shows why he is such a special player at Man City It was a decision that was tough on him and his family due to the three-hour train journey which forced him to stay with a host family and change schools. Advertisement Despite the ordeal, Gittens said it was an easy decision to make, telling Secret Scout last year: "It was an easy decision. "I could have gone to Arsenal but I chose City because they were producing players like Brahim Diaz and Jadon Sancho back then. "At the start, I didn't really believe it. I'm from a small town in the middle of nowhere. "When they told me that they wanted me, I was just surprised, but thought that all the hard work I had put in was paying off." Advertisement Then in 2020, he completed the Sancho-inspired journey to join Dortmund, where he has since developed into one of England's brightest talents and had the chance to play alongside Jude Bellingham and Sancho. Martyn Beney, Gittens' former coach at Caversham, told SunSport last year: "A month into his training with us, we were thinking 'Christ, this boy has got some serious ability'. WATCH EVERY MATCH OF THE CLUB WORLD CUP 2025 LIVE ON DAZN "His dribbling was incredible, even as a six-year-old. Jamie was a shy boy behind the scenes, with a really nice, sporty family, but they didn't push him... Advertisement "They said they wanted him to be coached in a way where he could enjoy it, learn a few things along the way and can develop naturally. That's exactly what we did... "To see him develop and get this chance, which we all know is minimal percentages, from a local level, where his parents still live in the village, is a delight. 'To have mentors like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, who really was the first one to tell reporters, 'Watch this kid, he's coming up next' and to know he started with us, is great. It's a really nice story and one that the club is very proud of." It hasn't all been smooth sailing for Gittens though, with him suffering numerous injuries including operations on both joints and a shoulder issue dating back to when he was 14. Advertisement He has also had to make major life changes, cutting out his favourite sugary treats like chocolate and sweets in a bid to make it to the top. Fast-forward to today, and he has also lost game time since Niko Kovac was appointed on January 29, including playing just eight minutes off the bench in the final two Bundesliga games of the season. But Chelsea's interest in Gittens - who won the Under-19 European Championships with England in 2023 - has not faded, and they are set to table another bid of £55m to try and tempt Dortmund into selling. BLUE MOVERS CHELSEA have become adept at nicking some of the talent factory from rivals Man City - and it doesn't look like stopping any time soon. Jamie Gittens would be the EIGHTH high-profile name to move to Stamford Bridge from The Etihad, sometimes via a couple of other clubs in between - not including Jadon Sancho who spent last season at Stamford Bridge on loan.
