Nigel Farage set for slot on BBC election debates... despite having no MSPs

Nigel Farage is set to secure a high-profile slot in the BBC's leaders' debate ahead of next year's Holyrood elections - despite his party having no MSPs. Early informal talks have already taken place about the debates, with BBC Scotland representatives making clear that Reform UK will join the other five main parties at Holyrood on its broadcast. BBC sources also said that it will be up to Reform, which does not have a Scottish leader, to decide whether to put up Mr Farage or one of its candidates in Scotland. Reform UK confirmed that he will take the opportunity to take part in any Scottish debates. The BBC is taking a different approach to ITV Cymru in Wales, which indicated that anyone taking part in its leaders' debate must be a candidate for the Senedd. Reform UK's Glasgow councillor Thomas Kerr said: 'It is fully our intention to have Nigel on the debates. 'If diaries fix up and everything else then Nigel Farage will be the one who represents us on those TV debates. 'I know there's been an issue in Wales about whether or not they were having Nigel on the debates and they came out and said no. 'I've not had that feeling from the broadcasters when we've spoken to them, I don't think they are going to have that issue in Scotland. 'To be honest with you, I think they quite like the idea of Nigel being on the debates and giving it a bit more fun and flavour.' BBC Scotland was previously embroiled in a row with the late former First Minister Alex Salmond in 2021 after ruling that his Alba Party could not take part in its debate, which only featured the five main parties represented at Holyrood. But a source at the Corporation confirmed that Reform will take part because of its strong current polling and its performance in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, as well as numerous local by-elections - and that it will be free to decide who takes part. Reform was also offered a place on STV's by-election debate, which did not trigger concerns from the other parties. Mr Kerr said: 'We are more relevant in the conversation in Scottish politics than even the Scottish Tories or the Lib Dems at the moment, so it would be bizarre not to have Reform on it. 'If you're looking for evidential facts, which Alba never really had, we are polling second place in Scotland, if not just below in third place quite comfortably, and the Hamilton by-election has shown we are one of the three main parties being able to fight in a seat like that that became a three-way marginal.' A Scottish Conservative spokesman said: 'Considering so many of their candidates are pro-independence, we look forward to seeing who Reform put forward.' The SNP is not expected to resist Mr Farage taking part - even though John Swinney previously held a summit to 'lock out' his party from Holyrood, with a party source saying: 'We won't put up a fight because there is a case there for them.' The BBC already handed Mr Kerr from Reform a place on its panel for its Question Time programme when it was filmed in St Andrews on Thursday. A BBC Scotland spokesman said: 'We'll announce our plans for coverage of next year's election in due course.' Broadcast regulator Ofcom ruled following Alba's 2021 complaint that the BBC's decision to exclude the party 'did not raise concerns under Section Five and Six of our Broadcasting Code'. It said: 'Under our Broadcasting Code, election programmes must comply with special impartiality requirements. 'This means they must preserve due impartiality and include and give due weight to an appropriately wide range of significant views and perspectives. 'Broadcasters must also give due weight to the coverage of parties during the election period, taking into account evidence of past electoral support and/or current support.'

Lewis Capaldi plays emotional not-so-secret comeback set at Glastonbury

Lewis Capaldi has made an emotional comeback with a "secret" performance at Glastonbury - two years after announcing a break from the spotlight, where he struggled on stage at the festival. After revealing his new song Survive earlier in the day, Capaldi took to the Pyramid Stage and surveyed the huge crowd before him, before launching straight into his 2019 hit, Before You Go. Glastonbury, how you doing?" was the simple introduction after the first chorus, and then came his second song, Grace. Before the next one, the Scottish singer took it all in again and told the audience: "Glastonbury, it's so good to be back... I'm not going to say much up here today because if I do, I'll probably start crying." But, he added, he wanted to thank his fans, and "finish what I couldn't the first time round". Along with the headliners and the Sunday afternoon "legends slots", secret sets from the likes of Foo Fighters, The Killers, and Radiohead have become some of the most talked-about performances at Glastonbury in recent years. This time round, there had been much speculation about some of the big unannounced slots on the bill - in particular the TBA act scheduled to appear on the festival's main stage, the Pyramid Stage, just before Alanis Morissette on Friday afternoon. With various clues trailed on social media and in Glasgow, where Capaldi was born, and Castle Cary, near Glastonbury, by the time Capaldi walked on stage, it was in reality no secret to all but a few of the huge crowd that had turned out for the "surprise". The 28-year-old acknowledged the absurdity of his set being "TBA", describing it as the "worst kept secret" and joking: "I don't know who's been f*****g telling people." There were chants of "Oh, Lewis Capaldi!" from the crowd before he began his next songs, including Hold Me While You Wait, Bruises, Forget Me, and Someone You Loved. His performance was more than just a surprise set. A few months before his last appearance at Glastonbury, again on the Pyramid Stage, in 2023, Capaldi had released the all-access documentary, How I'm Feeling Now. It showed his rise from viral hit-maker to a star whose debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, became the biggest-selling in the UK in its year of release - and the year after, too. No mean feat when you consider his competition - Ed Sheeran was second in 2019 and Harry Styles in 2020. Fans have always loved Capaldi not just for his talent as a singer and songwriter, but for his class-clown humour and his unfiltered, indifferent style. But his sense of humour and anti-celebrity attitude masked struggles with his mental health and Tourette's, which he spoke about candidly in the film. At Glastonbury in 2023, the strain was clear. Prior to the performance, he had cancelled several shows to rest and recover. On stage, he apologised as he prepared to belt out his hit song Someone You Loved. "I'm going to be honest, everybody, but I'm starting to lose my voice up here, but we're going to keep going and we're going to go until the end," he told the crowd. "I just need you all to sing with me as loud as you can, if that's okay?" And of course they did, the voices of tens of thousands of people carrying him through. In a statement afterwards, the star said the sentiment had meant "the world", before announcing a break for "the foreseeable future". "I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this, and I'd hoped three weeks away would sort me out," he said. "But the truth is I'm still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette's and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come." In May, Capaldi performed his first show in two years - a charity gig in Edinburgh to raise funds for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (Calm), a mental health charity he has supported over the years. For most artists, playing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury is a dream. Now, Capaldi has achieved it once again - this time, fans didn't need to help him with the sing-along, but of course they joined him anyway. The love from the audience was clear. "How far will you go to get back to the place you belong?" is one of the lines from Survive. With this performance, Capaldi showed that this, one of the world's most famous stages, is still that place for him.

Glastonbury fans declare the 'best thing to happen' as they 'work out' identity of secret performer

Glastonbury Festival fans and attendees believe they've figured the identity of one of the enigmatic 'TBA' (to be announced) slots that's due to take place at the event today (Friday, June 27). While many people have been trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the act known as Patchwork appearing on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night (June 28), speculation has continued over the elusive 'TBA' act. Many eagle-eyed fans noticed a short gap on the Pyramid Stage on Friday, lasting just 35 minutes between 4.55pm and 5.30pm. Rumours circulated about the likes of Radiohead, Ed Sheeran, Lorde and Lewis Capaldi were all thrown into the mix. However it appears that to be all but confirmed that the TBA slot will be none other than the Glasgow-based singer, Lewis Capaldi. Posts appeared on social media earlier this week of two billboards, one in Somerset and one in Lewis' hometown of Glasgow, with mysterious lyrics and a phone number. READ MORE: Steps star shares reason why the hit pop group rejected iconic Glastonbury gig READ MORE: First-ever musical act broadcast at Glastonbury Festival recalls 'amazing experience' A post shared by @thearchbishopofbanterbury from a user called John read: 'Two mysterious billboards have popped up overnight, one at the site of Glastonbury festival and one in Glasgow.' The billboards read, 'I've had my share of Monday mornings when I can't get up,' and 'I refuse to spend my best year rotting in the sun'. To add more fuel to the fire, Lewis launched his return to the music scene, releasing a sneak peak of his new song 'Survive' at midnight on Friday. In an Instagram post, the singer wrote: 'It's been a while…' View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Archbishop of Banterbury(@thearchbishopofbanterbury) Fan account Secret Glasto appeared to validate the rumours, encouraging fans to watch Lewis' return. The account wrote: 'Already widely known, but Lewis Capaldi will be playing the TBA on he Pyramid stage between 1655–1730. He's had a tough few years so go give him some Glastonbury love.' Glastonbury fans shared some love for the singer, with Dave writing on X (formerly known as Twitter): 'Good to see lewis capaldi back, was in the crowd last time at glastonbury and could see how much he was struggling. Hope he smashes it today back there.' Coral agreed: 'The best thing that can happen today is for Lewis Capaldi to make a comeback on Glastonbury pyramid stage. The love he will feel will be another level, his new song today…' Lewis last appeared at Glastonbury in 2023, where he was seen struggling to continue singing due to the impact of his Tourette's. The crowd continued to sing his songs back to him. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lewis Capaldi (@lewiscapaldi) Later on the singer addressed his performance, announcing a break from touring for the foreseeable future. In an Instagram post, he wrote: 'Hello everyone. First of all, thank you to Glastonbury for having me, for singing along when I needed it and for all the amazing messages afterwards. It really does mean the world. 'The fact that this probably won't come as a surprise doesn't make it any easier to write, but I'm very sorry to let you know I'm going to be taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future. 'I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I'd hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out. But the truth is I'm still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette's and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come. 'I know I'm incredibly fortunate to be able to take some time out when others can't and I'd like to thank my amazing family, friends, team, medical professionals and all of your who've been so supportive every step of the way through the good times and even more so during this past year when I've needed it more than ever. 'I'm so incredibly sorry to everyone who had planned to come to a shower before the end of the year but I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve. Playing for you every night is all I've ever dreamed of so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. I'll be back as soon as I possibly can. 'All my love, always, Lewis.' Lorde has also appeared to self-confirm her appearance on the Woodsies stage at 11.30pm on Friday. She shared a snapshot of the iconic tent to her Instagram story followed by the message, '11.30am BST'. For information about how to watch Glastonbury from the comfort of your own home, read here.
