Snakebite victim cured at end-stage condition

Mahabubnagar: Doctors at Ravi Children's Hospital saved the life of a 7-year-old boy who was brought in a near-death condition following a snakebite. The patient, Srikanth, hailing from Balampet village, Dowlthabad mandal, Vikarabad district, was admitted in a critical state with multiple organ complications. According to hospital authorities, Srikanth was unconscious upon arrival and suffered from severe stomach pain and respiratory failure. With a poor Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, the condition was identified as Type 2 respiratory failure. He was shifted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and placed on ventilator support. The hospital's emergency team began treatment with anti-snake venom, intravenous fluids, and other intensive supportive care. Over the next 48 hours, the child responded positively, with significant improvement in ventilator parameters. As his condition stabilized, he was gradually weaned off the ventilator. Though he experienced mild breathing difficulty initially, he recovered quickly and was discharged in a stable condition. Dr Shekhar, Medical Director of Ravi Children's Hospital, commended the entire team's swift action. 'The child was in a life-threatening condition when he was brought in. Our PICU team, nurses, and emergency care staff worked around the clock. This case highlights how crucial timely medical intervention is in saving lives, especially in rural snakebite cases,' he said. The parents of the child thanked the health staff and the doctors for saving their child.

Doctors perform critical surgeries to save accident victims in Kalaburagi hospital

In a remarkable display of medical expertise and coordination, doctors at Jeeva Super Speciality Hospital in Kalaburagi have successfully treated five patients critically injured in different road accidents, offering them a new lease on life. Addressing a press conference on the hospital premises in Kalaburagi on Sunday, hospital director Ajay Guttedar and doctor Krishna Kulkarni shared details of the complex cases handled by their team. Among the patients was 24-year-old Arun who sustained a severe head injury in a road accident and was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. He underwent an emergency brain surgery lasting five hours, performed by a dedicated team of neurosurgeons. Additionally, he had suffered spinal injuries that had left him unable to sit upright. After undergoing four surgical procedures, Arun recovered swiftly and was discharged from hospital in a stable condition. In another severe case, 30-year-old Mahesh lost his left leg in a road accident, with the limb completely detached from his body. The surgical team, led by Dr. Ajay Guttedar, intervened immediately. Thanks to their efforts, Mahesh was out of the ICU within a few days and made a notable recovery within 14 days. Three-year-old Siddharth had fallen from the second floor of a building and arrived at the hospital with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of only 3 — far below the normal score of 15 —, indicating a critical state. In a battle between life and death with extensive internal bleeding, doctors opted for intensive medical management in the ICU rather than surgery. Their strategy paid off and the child made a full recovery. Another young patient, five-year-old Yuvaraj sustained serious facial and neck injuries in a road mishap. The medical team performed a two-hour facial reconstruction surgery, helping the child recover within a short period. Six-year-old Samruddhi suffered a traumatic brain injury and internal bleeding after falling from a height. She underwent emergency surgery and was able to leave the ICU within 48 hours. Her successful recovery, with her smile restored, was celebrated by the doctors. The press conference was attended by several medical professionals who played a role in the treatment, including doctors Sushila Guttedar, Shifali, Divya, Shashank Sangolli, Vishal Huggi, Anand Patil, Anand Mangalagi, Veeresh, Mallikarjun, Vijay Kolhar and Shivasharanappa.

Organ of brain-dead man donated at SSG hospital

Vadodara: The family of a 57-year-old man, declared brain dead at the state-run Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital, has donated his organs, offering a new lease of life to others. The deceased, identified as Suresh Jivraj Chauhan, was admitted to the hospital on June 3 after a sudden spike in blood pressure caused him to fall unconscious. He was under treatment in the Medicine B unit of the hospital. Doctors initially considered operative management. However, his condition deteriorated, and his Glasgow Coma Scale score dropped, leading to a diagnosis of brain death. "After this, the patient's relatives were counselled for organ donation ," a hospital doctor said. Chauhan's wife, Jyoti, and sons, Amit and Lalit agreed to the donation. His liver and corneas were subsequently harvested for transplant. The procedure was carried out in coordination with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), with joint efforts from the ICU, medicine, and anaesthesia departments of the hospital.

Sabah Parks boosts emergency training, seismic monitoring

KOTA KINABALU: Safety improvements have been implemented on Mount Kinabalu following the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that claimed 18 lives a decade ago. Sabah Parks deputy director of operations, privatisation and development Maipol Spait said these include new high-altitude climbing training, enhanced emergency response procedures and formalising the role of mountain guides as first responders. Earlier this year, the agency signed a memorandum of agreement with the Fire and Rescue Department to boost rescue coordination. Disaster simulation training, introduced in 2016, continues to involve mountain guides, porters and government agencies. Participants are trained in search and rescue, rope rescues, first response techniques, how to use automated external defibrillators and Glasgow Coma Scale assessments. "Upcoming drills will focus on search-and-rescue responses under extreme weather conditions," Maipol told the New Straits Times. "The earthquake gave us a profound and valuable experience, especially in strengthening our standard operating procedures for climbing safety on Mount Kinabalu." Real-time seismic monitoring was also introduced, with detectors installed on Mount Kinabalu and in Kundasang. Sabah Parks works with the Sabah Minerals and Geoscience Department to monitor seismic activity. The state rebuilt accommodation facilities in Panalaban with seismic risks in mind and rerouted the Ranau summit trail to avoid high-risk zones. Stairs were added to vulnerable sections. Two alternative trails, Kota Belud and Ranau, were built to support rescue missions. While safety has been a key focus, cultural and community values remain central to Sabah Parks' mission. The Council of Indigenous Customs and Traditions of Mount Kinabalu was reactivated to advise on traditional beliefs and taboos linked to the mountain. "We apply best management practices to involve local people in programmes that strengthen their spiritual and economic ties to the mountain," said Maipol, noting that many in the community work as guides or porters. A quake gallery was established in Kinabalu Park to educate visitors and preserve the memory of the disaster. Maipol said this year's earthquake commemoration ceremony would feature a disaster awareness and safety talk. The annual ceremony, held at the Kiau View platform in Kinabalu Park, involves a moment of silence and a flower laying ritual at a monument made from rocks dislodged during the quake. This year, experts will speak on seismic activity and disaster preparedness for the 1,000 visitors and tourists expected at the event. The event is organised by Sabah Parks, the Ranau District Office and Mesilau Volunteers. Last year, Mount Kinabalu recorded 48,844 climbers, up from 47,212 in 2022, reflecting a return of confidence among trekkers and tourists.
