Glastonbury backstage photographer ready for Raye and Rodrigo
As stars like Olivia Rodrigo, Raye and Rod Stewart head onto the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury this year, one photographer will have the perfect place to capture that Jackson from Bridgend has a small studio set up right next to the a photographer who loves music, it's his dream job."I'm photographing people I had posters of on my wall. It's a massive privilege," he said. Tom is never sure if the stars will agree to have their picture taken. They are told about his studio and asked to have a photo for the Glastonbury archive. Tom says the process is quite "organic", with some stars agreeing, others not, and some changing their minds at the last minute. So he has to be ready, set to take the shot at a moment's notice if the opportunity comes. "It's an electric place, it's nuts, everyone is on high tempo, the management, the artists."They come out of the VIP area, walk to me, have their picture taken, and the stairs are next to me going up to the stage."He remembered seizing the chance to capture one of his music heroes, when Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters came in. "They came off stage quite suddenly so there was no management waiting, and I said 'Dave do you want to do it now?' "And he said 'boys, do you want to have a sweaty band picture' and they went 'Yeah'." "Dave Grohl was the drummer of Nirvana, one of my favourite bands, I've got their album on the wall there. It's mental."Raye was also "cool" although she had Louis Theroux and a documentary team in tow, which Tom said was a bit out of his comfort zone."They filmed the whole thing, then Raye came over and she was chatting to me, so the cameras came in again. "She was lovely, loved her pictures and posted them straight away. "The thing about Glasto is that it's such a big thing for the artists too, so to enjoy that moment with them is quite nice." So how do you bag a dream job? Tom's break came when he was photographing Emily Eavis at Glastonbury, the daughter of Michael Eavis who started the festival, for The Times Magazine. After the shoot, Tom decided to take a chance and send an email."I was quite frank and said, 'If you ever need anyone to do portraits on the Pyramid Stage, I'd just love to help'."In about half an hour, I got an email back saying 'We'd love you to'. "Then the first year it was crazy. "I photographed Kylie Minogue, The Killers, The Cure, Miley Cyrus, Lauren Hill, in three days."But then, he was no stranger to photographing celebrities. His work at The Times magazine led to him capturing all kinds of well known personalities, from a Spice Girl to Sir David Attenborough. Tom remembered out of everyone he's photographed, it was Sir David, who made him feel the most star-struck. "When you're looking through a lens and you see that man... it's mad. He has to be one of my favourites."Tom had 40 minutes to get that shot in Sir David's home. That's a luxury compared to some of the other stars he's said his time with England and Arsenal footballer Bukayo Saka was cut heavily, and he ended up doing the entire shoot in just seven of Tom's favourite photos he's taken is of Lenny Kravitz. The shoot took place in a Paris hotel overlooking the Eiffel Tour, and the rock star was up for playing the part."He had this huge leather case and I thought it's a guitar. He said 'look at this, man' and he opened it up and it was full of god knows how many vintage sunglasses. But he was game. I said do you mind sitting in the bath and he said 'Yeah, get me some champagne'."Tom has done the press photography in recent years for the Christmas special of Gavin and Stacey and also the Finale. He captured actors James Corden and Matthew Horne, Smithy and Gavin. "I was photographing them as characters but then they just started having a laugh and fooling around and I just got a nice picture of them both."His shot of Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of Pulp, was taken in the rehearsal room for the bands' current tour."He helped edit them and it was cool." "I was stood in a Camden studio watching them rehearse and it was like a live private gig with Pulp."Key to a good shoot for Tom is to be prepared, to be set up and ready to go, play some music to help relax people and ensure that everyone feels comfortable. That way Tom feels he'll get the best portrait."I like faces, character in faces. I want to capture 'them', the person."And now that most of us carry good quality cameras in our pockets, built into our phones, what's Tom's top tip for taking a good picture?"Use the flash. Every time."

Glastonbury revellers to bombard mum and dad with 39 filthy items on average
A 'wash pit' is being set up at a motorway service station popular with revellers returning from Glastonbury Festival to help ease the load on mum and dad and stave off the 'laundry apocalypse' Festival season leaves washing machines working flat out to deal with an overload of mud-encrusted, dusty and sweat-covered clothing, according to new research. Young adults aged 16 to 30 drag home an average of 39 filthy items - including eight pairs of socks, seven pairs of pants, seven t-shirts, and five hoodies - from a big weekend event like Glastonbury. And with the famous festival in full swing this week, parents across the country are bracing themselves for the inevitable laundry apocalypse. To save the nation's washing machines from post-festival overload, British Gas is launching The Wash Pit - a giant pop-up laundrette - on Monday, June 30. Located at Leigh Delamere Eastbound Services, a popular stop on the M4 for Glastonbury-goers heading home, the facility is designed to lighten the laundry load before it even reaches the front door. Bookable for free via Eventbrite, The Wash Pit will be powered by solar energy and sit inside an electric vehicle that has been charged during PeakSave hours, making it cost effective and better for the environment. Catherine O'Kelly, Managing Director of British Gas Energy, said: "Our research shows that young adults continue to lean on the family home, especially after big weekends like Glastonbury with parents happy to help. "However, we understand how that impacts households, from energy bills to laundry loads, so The Wash Pit is our way of saving parents' energy - for the home and themselves. Whether it's through half-price electricity on Sundays with PeakSave, or same-day engineer visits when things go wrong, we are here to take care of things for our customers when it matters most." The poll of 2,000 parents found that 92% believe their teens and 20-somethings are still draining the household energy, whether they've officially moved out or not. Even 80% of empty nesters say their grown-up children regularly pop home to charge their phones (65%), take long showers (61%), watch hours of TV (49%), and of course, dump their laundry (31%). According to the study, conducted by British Gas, parents run six loads of laundry a week just for their kids, coming in at nearly nine hours of machine time. And it doesn't stop there - the average Gen Z enjoys 13 showers at the family home, each lasting an average of 18 minutes. Adult children also use their parents' oven for an average of nine hours a week and have the TV on for up to 20 hours, regardless of whether anyone's watching or not. It's no surprise then, that 67% of parents polled admit to recently shouting the age-old line: "Shut that door - were you born in a barn?!" Yet despite the inevitable hit to their energy bills, most parents aren't slamming the door shut - in fact, 72% of Brits say they wouldn't have it any other way. Even with an average of four energy-related squabbles each week, parents remain happy to help, seeing it as simply part of what it means to be a family. Parents' Top 10 Teen Energy Peeves: Charging their phones and gadgets for hours – 65% Leaving lights blazing in every room – 63% Taking unnecessarily long showers – 61% Leaving the telly on all day – 49% Overusing kitchen gadgets (air fryer, toaster, kettle…) – 38% Turning up the thermostat without asking – 24% Leaving the windows open with the heating on – 23% Forgetting to turn off the oven – 18% Running the bath to the brim – 17% Leaving the oven on for longer than needed – 16% The Wash Pit will be operating on June 30 th between 11am-6pm at Leigh Delamere Eastbound Service Station, between Junction 17 and 18, M4 Eastbound, Chippenham SN14 6LB. Slots for a speedy wash and dry are limited and can be booked on Eventbrite.

CMAT shouts ‘Free Palestine' and wades into Glastonbury crowd during lively set
Irish singer CMAT chanted 'Free Palestine' and waded into the Pyramid Stage crowd, who were dancing in the midday heat, during her Glastonbury Festival set. The musician, real name Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, 29, played songs from her back catalogue as well as new singles, including Take A Sexy Picture Of Me, from her forthcoming third studio album Euro-Country. Plenty of festivalgoers could be seen doing the viral dance to the song, which has taken social media by storm in recent months. Kicking off her set with Have Fun! the singer, who wore an all-purple ensemble with white boots, sang while lying flat on the floor before getting to her feet and shouting: 'Glasto!' The musician, who blends pop and rock with folk and country influences, performed from her back catalogue, receiving rapturous applause while singing hits including I Don't Really Care For You. The singer also encouraged fans to dance along to the 'Dunboyne County Meath two-step' while singing I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby! 'I think we might be about to break a personal record for the very sexy CMAT band,' she told crowds. 'We've never attempted it (the dance) with this many people so I'm a little scared,' the singer added. Olivia Rodrigo sends fans wild as she brings out Ed Sheeran at huge sold out BST gig ahead of Glastonbury slot
Organisers went all out to turn the backstage area into a sanctuary SHEER JOY Olivia Rodrigo sends fans wild as she brings out Ed Sheeran at huge sold out BST gig ahead of Glastonbury slot OLIVIA Rodrigo sent her fans wild tonight when she surprised them by bringing out Ed Sheeran at her sold out BST gig in Hyde Park. Just two days before she closes Glastonbury Festival, Olivia proved why she's one of the best pop stars on the planet with a set jam-packed with catchy, angsty anthems. 5 Olivia Rodrigo performed a powerful set at BST tonight Credit: AP 5 The singer had a special guest waiting in the wings 5 Ed and Olivia performed his hit The A Team Credit: The Sun And superstar Ed's cameo was the icing on the cake of a glorious sunny day in the capital. Drivers License singer Olivia, 22, dressed to impress for her huge headline show, kicking off in a black sequined leotard. Ahead of the performance, she was able to unwind in her own private sanctuary with organisers adapting the backstage area with wildflower planters. And it was much needed as Olivia used up every ounce of energy in a lively set split into three parts. READ MORE ON OLIVIA RODRIGO STARLET TO SUPERSTAR Meteoric rise of Olivia Rodrigo from Disney star to Glasto headliner It was in the final part that Ed came out for a rendition of his early hit The A Team, having watched the show from the side of the stage. Olivia introduced him as "one of the best songwriters of all time". There were famous faces in the crowd including James Corden, who stood beside Olivia's boyfriend Louis Partridge, and Sabrina Carpenter, who will perform on the same stage next week. Ed's no stranger to guest appearances, having stepped on stage with everyone from Limp Bizkit to Stormzy and Taylor Swift. And his acoustic anthem lent itself perfectly to California girl Olivia's meteoric rise to fame has taken her from Disney Channel starlet to 46million monthly listeners on Spotify, 14 Grammy nominations and collaborations with David Byrne and Lily Allen. Olivia Rodrigo praised for her 'iconic' FireAid performance - but fans all have the same complaint In 2016, Olivia was cast in Disney's Bizaardvark and three years later she starred in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a mockumentary that sees a bunch of teens putting on a stage production of the hit. Between High School Musical takes, the young actress worked away on her guitar, writing more music, until eventually Disney bosses invited her to create an original song for her character to sing in the show. The piano ballad that emerged — All I Want — went viral, and she was soon in line for a record deal. But unlike others who went from Disney favourite to superstar, such as Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, Olivia shunned the in-house label and decided to do things her own way. Everything changed overnight in January 2021 when Olivia released her debut single Drivers License in the middle of winter lockdown. It became the first song on Spotify to hit 80million streams in just seven days. The tune also shot straight to No1 on charts globally and propelled her into what she called a 'crash course in adulthood'. 'That was the craziest time of my life,' she said back then. 'I was sitting in a grocery store parking lot, and I called my A&R guy. 'It had just gone No 1 on Apple music, which is hard for a pop act to do. 'We were looking at each other on FaceTime, speechless. 'That was the moment I knew that it was going to be something bigger than I expected.' Her second single, Deja Vu, was certified four times platinum in the States, then May 2021 saw the release of her debut album Sour, with pop-punk hit Good 4 U going six times platinum in the US. She earned rave reviews from critics, while artists including Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne heaped praise upon her. Her first live performance in the UK was at the Brit awards in 2021, while her festival debut here was at Glastonbury the following year. In just a few short years, she's now at the very top of the pile, holding her own beside fellow headliners The 1975 and Neil Young. 5 Ed loves collaborating with artists from all genres Credit: The Mega Agency
