Women seek home for 12ft by 11ft woollen map of Ireland

A 12ft by 11ft wool map of Ireland, which took four years of knitting and crocheting to complete, is in search of a new home to go on public display. A group of up to 18 women in Co Wicklow, consisting of skilled knitters, sewers and crocheters, started the project in 2019 before it paused during the pandemic and resumed again in late 2022. Advertisement The women met every Wednesday at Carnew Community Care centre where they came up with ideas of landmarks and historical sites across the island of Ireland that they could sew and knit together. While 18 people started off the project, three of the women died over the years and two others went in to nursing homes. The youngest member of the group is aged 65 while the eldest is soon turning 90. Group member Mary Blake said that after creating a number of other woollen projects, a member of the community centre suggested knitting a map of Ireland. Advertisement The woollen map project quickly took off and now features prominent landmarks and sites across the island, including Glendalough, Croagh Patrick, Phoenix Park, Giant's Causeway and Fungie the Dolphin. Ms Blake said: 'We all decided which bits would represent areas of significance and we put it all together like a jigsaw. 'We covered the whole of Ireland in green squares, all different shades of green, before we started doing any of the knitting. 'Then we started with Leinster, and somebody said, I'll do Mount Leinster, and someone else started on Hook Head (lighthouse), and different people did different parts. We worked together on everything, Advertisement 'Most of it took place in Carnew Community Care, which is a centre for older people. We meet every Wednesday morning and whatever we don't get finished, we bring home the bits to get done. So we couldn't get wool and we couldn't meet either. We got back together at the end of 2022 but we'd lost a few people in the meantime, during Covid. 'We lost one of our members Margaret so decided to add bits in to represent her life close to the Shannon. 'We couldn't do something to represent every county but we did places like Glendalough, the Japanese Gardens in Kildare, Hook Head, a Viking ship, the Guinness gate, Phoenix Park, Dublin Zoo. Advertisement 'We also have Harland and Wolff, the Titanic ship with parts of it sinking, Theresa's cottage in Donegal, the Ulster Museum, we have loads of animals in it, Giants Causeway, which we made out of Smarties boxes. 'We have lots of fishermen, the Aran Island, windmills, Croagh Patrick, Galway Races and best dressed lady, the Shannon, Sherkin Island, Blarney Castle, and Fungie. 'Some people sewed, some people crocheted, and some people sewed things together. 'One of our ladies is going be 90 next year and I'd say the youngest person we have is over 65.' Advertisement She added: 'It gives people a purpose. We also knit blankets for local hospitals. Mary Blake points to a boat in memory of Margaret Dowse, who died during the creation of her group's knitted map of Ireland. Photo: Niall Carson/PA. 'We were all really excited to take part in this project and seeing it finished was amazing.' Ms Blake said those involved would like to see it go on public display. 'We don't really mind, whoever wants it is welcome to have it, but we would love to see it in a public place, somewhere that it can be viewed and give everybody an opportunity to see it. We're open to whoever wants to take it,' she added. 'I'm so excited to see it finished and would like others to see it too. It would look great in one of the airports.' One of the members, Ann Edwards, said it was a fun experience. 'I have lots of favourites but I think Hook Head and the Viking ship are particularly nice and colourful and great to work on,' she said. 'They were difficult to do. I worked on the Vikings. It was interesting and enjoyable. 'We dug into the memory bank and came up with ideas and what things would have looked like.'

Beyond the Pale: All hands on deck ahead of three-day music festival

Despite its recent challenges, Beyond the Pale is set to welcome almost 12,000 festivalgoers to the Glendalough Estate in Co Wicklow this weekend. On Thursday afternoon, organisers and crew were battling not just the rain but time after 'a little bit of a hiccup' paused on-site operations last weekend. Problems arose on Saturday due to financial difficulties. However, the following day, organisers announced that a 'very highly regarded operator' had stepped in, securing the festival's fate for 2025. Site manager Bob Doyle said despite the hiccup, they 'clawed it back', and he thinks the experience 'brought the team even closer together'. READ MORE 'We had a little bit of a hiccup last week which threw a curveball into the situation,' he said. 'It was very upsetting and emotional on Saturday morning, but we got over that, we made peace with it, no one died and then we got up the next day and started putting up all the stuff we spent all day taking down.' Promoter Declan Forde was unavailable for comment on the new investor, nor were organisers present on site able to offer any further clarity. According to Mr Doyle, however, the financial aid has been 'a game changer'. 'We lost a load of days, but the amount of goodwill surrounding this festival is colossal. We've been getting phone calls going: 'We've heard about the story, can we come up and just volunteer?'' [ Beyond the Pale festival to go ahead with help from 'a very highly-regarded operator', organisers say Opens in new window ] The recent downpours have added an additional challenge for this year's crunch-time preparation, with crews trying to keep the place pristine for the descending crowd. Festival coordinator Emily Brennan has worked with Beyond the Pale since it started four years ago. 'It's always growing every year. It's on a good trajectory,' she said. 'It's grown physically in size – we use more of the site now and more stages. We've a lot more sponsorship.' However, she said the current climate was tough for festivals, with everything far more expensive than a few years ago. 'There's just that cash flow thing in terms of the weeks before a festival. You make so much money at the festival in terms of bar sales and last-minute ticket purchases ... but you need to pay all the suppliers in advance so it becomes a real balancing act.' Volunteer manager Arthur Caulfield is busy rallying his 100-strong troop, spread between painting installations and signage and 'a lot of light manual work'. [ How to stage an Irish music festival: From All Together Now to Beyond the Pale Opens in new window ] Mr Caulfield is looking forward to a bit of time off on Sunday, when he hopes to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some of the acts like TV on the Radio who will headline that night. Artist Leah Hewson created one of the festival's quirky installations which promises to provide some colourful contrast to the weekend's potentially drab weather. She is enthusiastic about Beyond the Pale's commitment to platforming 'artists doing cool things' and says her work is part of a range of 'fun things to explore' on the grounds of Glendalough Estate. A blend of neon and iridescence, the 'jigsaw-puzzle' installation has been 'reimagined to exist in an outdoor setting', having previously been exhibited in New York's Art on Paper Fair in 2022. Scheduled for June 13th to 15th, the music festival features a line-up including Jon Hopkins , Róisín Murphy , TV On The Radio, Broken Social Scene, Marc Rebillet and Boney M.

Beyond the Pale festival to go ahead, organisers say after late doubts

Beyond the Pale festival, which is due to take place in Co Wicklow next weekend, is going ahead, organisers have said after doubts arose on Saturday about its fate. In a statement on Saturday night, the organisers said : 'it's unbelievably tough out there for independent festivals, venues, promoters, artists ... we all know that. Today we very nearly stumbled, ngl [not going to lie]. But the festival gods smiled upon us, and the fate of Beyond the Pale is secure for 2025, and for many years to come. 'Thanks for bearing with us today, thanks for all the messages and gestures of support ... and see you at Glendalough next week.' A report from The Currency on Saturday said a decision had been made to cancel the festival and the company Cupola Events Ltd run by Declan Forde would be liquidated 'effective immediately'. READ MORE However, a spokeswoman for the festival said on Saturday afternoon that the festival was not cancelled. This was followed up by the statement on Saturday night confirming that there had been some financial difficulties but stating the event would go ahead.
