Connor Syme targets Scottish Open after tour breakthrough
A few milestones, then, will have been packed into the last 12 months but, amid this whirl, a good dollop of patience has been very much the name of the game for Syme too. While fellow Scots like Robert MacIntyre, Grant Forrest, Calum Hill, David Law and Ewen Ferguson all notched wins on the DP World Tour over the last few years, Syme was left wondering if his time would ever come. Since 2020, Syme had posted three second place finishes, four thirds and 18 other top-10s on the main tour as he knocked on the door mores times than an Amazon delivery driver. The wait, of course, was worth it. A performance of poise, polish and, yes, patience, saw him ease to a two-shot victory in Amsterdam as he finally barged his way on the winner's podium in his 182nd start on the DP World Tour. Instead of charging off to another event in the immediate aftermath, Syme took time to savour his accomplishment with a couple of weeks off. There was a bit of rest and recuperation in the opulence of the Gleneagles Hotel while Syme and his wife, Alanis, also took in a Robbie Williams concert in Manchester and met the former Take That singer backstage. Given the Scot's elevated status as a tour champion, presumably folk were peering on in the corridor and saying, 'who's that geezer with Connor Syme?'. It's back to business now, but the memory of a breakthrough win will stay in the mind as if it's been seared on with a branding iron. 'Was it worth the wait and did it make it feel a lot sweeter?,' Syme told the DP World Tour. 'Yeah, probably. It just felt unbelievable.' Winning at any level of golf – yes, even for you trying to knock off a Saturday medal down the stretch – isn't easy and tends to require the kind of mental fortitude you'd need for a SAS bootcamp. "I think I got the lead on the 15th on Saturday, and I didn't let go of it from that point on,' he reflected. 'So that meant a lot after the work I'd put in to try and cope with that sort of pressure for a long period of time. "This sort of stuff doesn't really happen overnight. It's a lot of good hard work that I've been putting in to try to help my mental game as well as my golf game.' As for following those other tartan triumphs on the tour? "I am obviously trying to write my own script and my own history I suppose,' he added. 'But you do obviously feel the weight and think, 'is this ever going to happen?'. "Obviously, Bob (MacIntyre) has been the gold standard for Scottish golf for a number of years now. "Calum (Hill) was able to win for the second time this year, Ewen (Ferguson) has got three wins. All that maybe did add a bit more pressure on me to do it because I was aware that I was the last one out of that crop.' In the Netherlands, Syme was the cream of crop. At last. For his compatriot, Forrest, meanwhile, the quest for a second DP World Tour title goes on. In the relentless here, there and everywhere birl that is par for the course as a touring golfer, the Genesis Scottish Open provides a rare opportunity to revel in the home comforts. It is, after all, staged in Forrest's own backyard of East Lothian. A win in his local parish, and at the Renaissance club where he is attached, would be quite the conquest. There's just the small matter of beating a truly world class field. 'You definitely have an added incentive to do well in this event as it's at home but you probably feel a bit of added pressure too,' said the 30-year-old, whose best finish in six previous Scottish Open outings was 11th in 2023. Forrest earned his tour breakthrough on home soil back in 2021 at the Hero Open in St Andrews. 'The hunger is still there to win again,' said the former Scottish Amateur champion and Walker Cup player who became a father for the first time at the tail end of 2024. The recent success of Syme, and the friendly rivalry among the Scots, continues to drive him on. 'It helps when you see your peers doing well as I know I can do it as well,' he added. 'I don't see it as adding more pressure. It's more encouraging as you know that next player could be you. Golf is such a fickle game. You could easily miss a cut then win the following week.' The Genesis Scottish Open would be quite a week to do that.

Paige Spiranac Left Speechless amid Team USA's Ryder Cup Bag Drop
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The clock is ticking, and we are 87 days away from witnessing the ultimate madness of a Bethpage crowd during the Ryder Cup. Both Team USA and Team Europe are grinding hard to bring the pride home. And amid all this, team red-white-blue just poured oil on the fire with a new revelation of 'Swag'. On Monday, the PGA of America officially dropped the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team gear, crafted in collaboration with Swag Golf. (Photo by) More Getty Images If you have skimmed through Swag Golf's website, you would know how the designs aren't just visuals, but a vibe. The brand is known for injecting energy and attitude into classic golf aesthetics, and that's exactly what they infused into the Ryder Cup bag. The design holds a bold Americana vibe with iconic symbols like Mount Rushmore, the Liberty Bell, and the White House embroidered over high-quality patent leather. The bottom of the bag reads: "WARNING: The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers," nodding to Bethpage's notorious first-tee warning. Additionally, a custom Presidential Seal stamped with "In Keegan We Trust" ties the whole story back to U.S. Captain Keegan Bradley, who signed off for the tough role last year. The drop includes two bags, the high-capacity Vessel Prime 2.0 staff bag and the sleek VLS Lux stand bag. The staff version has 16 pockets. It's a beast weighing over 10 pounds with dual apparel compartments, rangefinder slots, insulated bottle sleeves, a valuables pocket, a removable belly panel, and a six-way velour-wrapped divider. The stand bag, meanwhile, is all about lightweight agility with 6 compartments. It includes carbon fiber legs, quilted hip padding, premium zippers, and adjustable EQ2 straps. Fans React after Ryder Cup Bag Drop Minutes after the official release of the design, netizens flooded social media platforms. It also had Paige Spiranac repost the bag with no words, but the thrill was clear. One fan commented, "The things I would do for this bag." Another dropped a GIF of Cotton McKnight from Dodgeball when he goes, "Oh my sweet Jesus." But the fire didn't stop there. With the ongoing Patrick Reed Ryder Cup debate, someone stirred the coals, typing, "Reed is gunna look good standing beside that 100." Others just kept it bold and simple with "I want one!"
