Fujifilm's GFX Challenge open to South African creators

The program is a global initiative designed to support and nurture aspiring creatives in bringing their imaging projects to life. Fujifilm has announced the launch of the GFX Challenge Grant Program 2025, with applications now open to creatives worldwide, including South Africa. The program is a global initiative designed to support and nurture aspiring creatives in bringing their imaging projects to life. South Africans have been encouraged to apply, following the success of Cape Town-based Jodi Windvogel, a Global Grant recipient of the challenge in 2023. Prize Creatives have the chance to receive a US$10 000 Global Grant Award or a US$5 000 Regional Grant Award, helping to transform their creative ideas into reality. Winners also receive access to a Fujifilm GFX System camera body and two GF lenses for the duration of their project, as well as mentoring and technical assistance from Fujifilm technicians and product experts. In total, there are five Global Grant Awards available, with 10 Regional Grant Awards in place. ALSO READ: Fujifilm launches X Half camera to make photography fun again Amateur and professional The GFX Challenge Grant Program 2025 is open to amateur and professional photographers and videographers who are residents of South Africa, with the submission period closing on 31 August 2025. The award recipients will be announced in January 2026, with the final projects to be exhibited in various countries as well as on the website. What to shoot? Windvogel was announced as a Global Grant recipient for her project 'The Body at Risk'. The project was a harrowing look at the landscapes in South Africa where incidents of gender-based violence took place. 'Start with a strong concept that is close to your heart – one that is well-researched, timely and meaningful. Ask yourself: why this story, why now and why you? Let your proposal reflect your commitment and the urgency of the narrative,' Windvogel said. 'The panel is not just looking for beautiful images; they're looking for work that moves, educates and sparks dialogue. Be honest, passionate and prepared to immerse yourself in the process.' Photographers and videographers looking to enter the GFX Challenge Grant Program 2025 are able to do so until 31 August 2025. Thirumalai Mission Hospital in Ranipet gets new dialysis units

Thirumalai Mission Hospital in Ranipet has received four dialysis units from Rotary Club of Ranipet with the aim of providing low-cost service to patients, especially people hailing from poor families in Ranipet and Vellore districts, and surrounding areas. According to a press release, Dr. Bhooma Parthasarathy, Trustee – Director, Thirumalai Mission Hospital, who presided over the occasion, said the addition of the two new units was made possible through the Rotary Club of Ranipet's Global Grant, and with this, the dialysis care unit in the hospital has been elevated as a Centre of Excellence. The dialysis facility with two units was set up in 2018 at the 15-year-old Thirumalai Mission Hospital. Since then, over 33,000 procedures have been performed – most of them free of cost to the rural poor through health insurance schemes of the governments. Since its inception, over 200 people have made use of the facility and 80 of them are using it now. In addition to physicians, who were on emergency duty to oversee the service daily, a visiting nephrologist also visits the unit periodically. With four new machines, worth about Rs. 40 lakh, the facility is expected to provide about 8,000 services in the coming year. The chief guest was Rajan Babu, District Governor, Rotary International District 3231. Other dignitaries include Rengarajan Chidambaram, Rotary Club of Granville District 9675, Australia, Vimal, President, Ranipet Rotary Club, Narmada Ashok, trustee, Anand Rangachary, Chief Executive Officer, and G. Prabhakar, Medical Superintendent, the release said.
