Foul play ruled out as cause of Cork couple Michael and Anna O'Sullivan's deaths

Gardaí investigating the deaths of an elderly couple whose bodies were found in their home in Co Cork have ruled out foul play, but say it is likely to be Wednesday before they know the causes of their deaths. The bodies of Michael and Anna O'Sullivan, aged respectively 84 and 79, were discovered at their home in Glounthaune village at around 5pm on Monday by a relative who called to check on them. The man, a relative of Ms O'Sullivan's, had rung the couple repeatedly on Monday but got no answer, so he travelled from his home in Cork City to check and see if they were all right. He got no response when he knocked on their door, so he used a key he had to enter the property. He discovered the bodies of the couple lying at the foot of the stairs. READ MORE The man alerted the emergency services, and the couple were pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaí cordoned off the area to allow for a forensic examination by Garda technical experts. They found no sign of forced entry at the house or anything to suggest the couple had been the victims of foul play. The bodies were removed to hospital on Tuesday. Gardaí ruled out the possibility of a gas leak at the property and the focus of their inquiry is on the possibility that one, or both, of the deceased fell down the stairs and suffered fatal injuries. It is understood that the positions of both deceased at the foot of the stairs were consistent with a fall, and officers noted that items stacked and stored on the stairs had also fallen down. They are hoping, however, that postmortems at Cork University Hospital will establish whether both fell and suffered fatal injuries, or if one may have suffered a medical event. Gardaí did not request the services of the State Pathologist's Office so the postmortems will be carried out by a hospital pathologist. The results are expected on Wednesday morning. Gardaí have established that the couple, who were very private, were both alive at around 6pm on Sunday, suggesting they died between Sunday night and Monday afternoon. Anyone who can assist with information that might help gardaí in preparing a file for an inquest at Cork County Coroner's Court is asked to contact Mayfield Garda station on 021 4558510.

Couple found dead at Cork home named

A couple in their eighties who were found dead near the stairs of their terraced home in Glounthaune, Co Cork, on Monday night have been named locally as Michael and Ann O'Sullivan. The bodies of the couple were found at about 5pm yesterday after a relative called to their property in the village. He found himself unable to contact the couple and enlisted the help of another man to force the door of the property. Advertisement Gardaí and the emergency services were contacted after the two men found the bodies of the pair near the stairs. A local GP formally pronounced the couple dead, and their bodies were later taken to the morgue at Cork University Hospital for postmortem examinations. There was no evidence of a gas leak. Nor was there anything to suggest they had met their deaths via foul play. The property has been technically examined as gardaí attempt to determine what caused their deaths. Gardaí are examining the possibility that the deaths may have occurred as a result of a fall. One of the parties possibly sustained a fall or experienced a medical incident, with the other also being fatally injured while going to their assistance. It is understood that contact was last made with the couple on Sunday evening, so gardaí have established that the deaths occurred at some point after that time. Advertisement Prayers were said for Mr and Mrs O'Sullivan at a mass in the area this morning. The couple were described as being 'very quiet people' who were respected in the village, which is located east of Cork city. The results of the postmortem examinations will determine the course of the Garda investigation. However, the deaths are being treated as a tragedy. Funeral arrangements will be finalised in the coming days. An inquest will be held at a later date.

Gardaí hope postmortems will establish Cork couple's cause of death

Gardaí in Cork are hoping postmortem examinations today will establish what happened to an elderly couple whose bodies were found Monday evening at their home outside the city. The 84-year-old-man and his 79-year-old-wife were discovered around 5pm when the woman's brother called to cut their grass at their terraced house in Glounthaune village in east Cork. The man was unable to gain access to the property and, becoming concerned for the couple's welfare, he called to a neighbour's house looking for assistance to gain entry. The two men forced in the front door to gain entry, only to discover the couple unresponsive on the floor at the foot of the stairs. READ MORE They alerted the gardaí and the emergency services were called. The couple was pronounced dead at the scene by a local GP and gardaí set about organising postmortems. The bodies remained at the property overnight and were removed early this morning to Cork University Hospital where a hospital pathologist has begun a postmortem. Gardaí are hoping the postmortems will establish what exactly happened the couple. However, they are satisfied from their initial inquiries that foul play was not involved. As a consequence they have not requested the services of the State Pathologist's office, which is the case when gardaí believe somebody has died as a result of criminal activity. Garda technical experts were nonetheless called to the scene and began a forensic examination to try and piece together the sequence of events that led to the couple's deaths. One line of inquiry gardaí are examining is whether one of the couple may have fallen on the stairs and the other tried to grab and save them but also fell down the stairs. Gardaí are confident the postmortems will also establish whether either of the couple might have suffered a medical episode which may have contributed to a fall on the stairs. Gardaí have spoken to relatives and established the couple were alive on Sunday evening. As such it is believed they died sometime on Sunday night or Monday morning or afternoon. Locals say the couple was very private and kept very much to themselves in the quiet and small grouping of houses in Glounthaune village which is located 10km east of Cork city.
