Major development in Hamza Igamane's Rangers transfer as ‘THREE clubs bid to hijack Lille's pursuit for striker'
HAMZA IGAMANE could still fire Rangers into the Champions League this season despite the Ibrox club being locked in transfer discussions with Lille. The French side have been leading the race for the Moroccan striker's signature this summer, but talks over a potential move to Ligue 1 have stalled in recent weeks. 2 Hamza Igamane scored 16 goals for Gers last season Credit: Willie Vass 2 Igamane celebrating winner against Celtic Credit: Willie Vass He still remains very much a Rangers player for the moment ahead of the club's crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos on Tuesday. But it's still looking unlikely that Russell Martin will still be able to hold onto the forward in the latter stages of the window. According to reports, Igamane now has THREE other clubs on his trail amid the ongoing uncertainty around his proposed move to Lille. Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims both Rangers and Lille are still in talks, but the Ligue 1 side are "struggling" to meet the Light Blues' demands. That has reportedly allowed the likes of Everton, Udinese and Feyenoord to join the race. Everton have been credited with interest in the 22-year-old for months, but the news of Udinese and Feyenoord's interest is a fresh development. It's claimed that although the Dutch giants have expressed interest, it is fact Everton and Udinese that have both made an initial approach to Rangers. The report suggests that both the English club and Italian outfit have made an enquiry to the Govan club. Udinese have clearly been keeping close eyes on Scottish football in recent years as the club have also been looking at Reo Hatate from Celtic and Motherwell's Lennon Miller too. It's understood that Rangers are holding out for a fee of around £15million for Igamane. 'Absolutely brilliant or RUBBISH' - Gassama Rangers transfer verdict and Souttar to leave That would see Gers make a mega profit after they only bought him for £1.7m last summer. He was a standout in Glasgow last season as he netted 16 goals throughout the campaign - including a famous winner against Celtic at Parkhead. Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Ross McCausland ‘lined up for surprise Rangers reunion' at overseas club
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RECENT news on Ross McCausland's potential departure from Rangers has been limited. Last month it was reported that three clubs were interested in signing the winger. And a report claims that there is still interest in McCausland from the States, as well as a new team joining the race. The Northern Irishman featured 25 times in all competitions for Rangers last season, scoring three times. But the 22-year-old fell out of favour with Barry Ferguson, making just three appearances under the interim boss. The final straw appeared to be the academy graduate's first-half red card away to Aberdeen in April, which proved to be his final appearance of the season. So it's possible that Gers will look to move McCausland on this summer, providing they can attract interest in him. And the Daily Record claim that two Major League Soccer sides are sniffing around McCausland. Aris Limassol of Cyprus are also said to have 'major interest' in the Gers star, along with some English teams. A move to Aris would see the wideman reunite with two former Ibrox teammates. Last year's Cypriot runners-up signed Connor Goldson when he brought his six-year Rangers career to an end last summer. Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane And they made another swoop for an Ibrox defender this summer, bringing in Leon Balogun on a free transfer. McCausland was snapped up by Gers from Linfield's youth setup in 2019. Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Newcastle Utd fans take over Rangers pub and set off pyro ahead of Celtic friendly clash
THIS is the moment Newcastle fans took over a RANGERS pub in the East End of Glasgow ahead of today's friendly clash with Celtic Park. The Bristol Bar, who sits at the end of Duke Street in the Dennistoun area, is usually packed with followers of the Ibrox side. 2 Banners bedecked the outside of the Rangers pub 2 Newcastle fans set off pyro But supporters of Newcastle United took it over today, with 10,000 members of the Toon Army travelling north for the friendly clash. Images widely shared on social media showed Newcastle fans letting off pyrotechnics and covered the outside of the pub with flags and banners in the hours before the game. Earlier there were good natured scenes between followers of Celtic and Newcastle in the city centre - although there were reports of trouble between fans in the area near the Barras market. Rangers transfer latest as Igamane eyed for BIG fee, battle for key target intensifies & Rothwell interest emerges
WE'RE now into July and Rangers will be looking to get some more transfer business done before their Champions League qualifiers. With Max Aarons and Lyall Cameron now in the door, Russell Martin will be looking to add further new recruits before Panathinaikos come calling. 10 Joe Rothwell is close to joining Rangers Credit: Getty 10 Rangers are battling Basel for Metinho Credit: Alamy 10 Lille are keen on signing Hamza Igamane Credit: PA 10 There are clubs interested in Mohamed Diomande too Credit: Willie Vass TWO key midfield targets are on Martin's radar as we edge closer to that huge European showdown. But while Gers chiefs look to get deals done, there's also plenty of talk surrounding some big stars the club won't want to lose. Lille have a firm interest in Hamza Igamane and could be willing to part with a sizable fee to land the Moroccan striker. Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande have also been linked with an exit from Ibrox - could either of them really leave this summer? SunSport's Go Ballistic Transfer Specials are your one-stop this summer for all the latest updates on comings and goings from both Ibrox and Celtic Park. Our head of sport Roger Hannah was back on this week's Rangers episode to give his take on all the current transfer activity in Govan. METINHO Very much a target. He's been on loan at Basel in the Swiss league and they're very keen to keep him form Troyes in the French league. They would need to stump up a bit of money to get him, as would Rangers of course. Maybe a position Rangers will look to strengthen in just in terms of numbers. They've got quality in there with Raskin, Diomande, Connor Barron - who's now a full Scotland international - but I think they'd look to Metinho to add to that. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked There's going to be a lot of football played by Rangers this season and July 1 can be a telling day. As well as being closer to the new season, you're into a new financial year and I think a lot of clubs have delayed making transfer moves until this time so that they can put the money onto this year's 'new' accounts. They talk about the player trading model, Lyall Cameron's coming in and they'll hope to sell him on for more. If Metinho comes in they'll look to develop him and sell him on. I don't think it'll exclusively young players like that coming in, I think there'll be different profiles coming in. I think you'll see loan signings, guys with a bit more experience as well coming into that squad to try and give it a bit of balance. It's going to be a fascinating three weeks until kick-off against Panathinaikos. JOE ROTHWELL You know what managers are like, when they go to a new club, how often do they go back and get guys who served them well previously? Joe Rothwell fits into that mould as well. He worked with Russell Martin at Southampton, it's probably a deal that can be rleatively easily done we can imagine. He's not one you'll bring in and get rid of for loads of money further down the line. We spoke about Martin's interest in Flynn Downes who he's worked at in the past, but you were talking a £10million fee for that, you wonder if Joe Rothwell is maybe being targeted as a cheaper option to Flynn Downes, if you like. MOHAMED DIOMANDE You can throw in Raskin and Hamza Igamane as well. YOu can see all of them leaving at some stage, but I'm not sure this is the summer for any of them to be going because I still think there's a bit of development, improvement in all three players. But that's only my opinion - if a club comes in, there was talk of Besiktas looking at Diomande, Lille are clearly looking at Igamane, various teams will be looking at Raskin as well. That's not to say someone comes in with a huge offer Rangers can't turn down but I suspect it might be better for everyone concerned if they had another year at Rangers and went next summer or even in January. 10 HAMZA IGAMANE You see really, really high figures. I had a discussion yesterday about Lennon MIller's future and people talking about 'X' million and 'Y' million. I don't think it's a case of what Lennon Miller's worht, it's what Motherwell can't turn down for Lennon Miller and I think the same applies for Igamane. It's not what people might think he's worth, it's what figure would you reach that Rangers couldn't turn down. I think that given what they paid for Igamane, given that under a couple of managers towards the end of last season he wasn't a first pick. He had great days, he scored the winner at Celtic Park, a smashing goal, he's had really good days, there was a hat-trick against Hibs thrown in as well. But he didn't finish the season as first choice, he was behind Cyriel Dessers. I think if someone like Lille came to Rangers and offered £10million and some kind of sell-on clause, I think he would be away. SAMUEL BALLET I don't think there's anything in it. They are looking at players in the winger position, understandably. Cerny's away, not sure about the future for Ross McCausland, Nedim Bajrami didn't really light the place up last season and neither did Oscar Cortes, I know a lot of that was down to injury. It wouldn't surprise me if Russell Martin is keen to make in-roads into that position but I don't think Ballet will be coming in, no. 10 Samuel Ballet is NOT a Rangers target Credit: Getty 10 Rangers missed out on Kwame Poku Credit: Getty KWAME POKU They thought they were quite far down the line with Poku. There was always interest from Birmingham and QPR kind of came to the party late and got the deal done, and fair play to QPR for getting the deal done. We'll probably find out in time what went wrong there for Rangers, if you like, but he was one that was high up on the list and they're now going to have to go further down the list because they do need players in that area. JOSH MULLIGAN My understanding is there was an interest from the Rangers recruitment department last season. I think that interest kept going even after Clement left and Barry Ferguson came in. There have been lots of changes, we think about Kevin Thelwell coming in, Nils Koppen departing, new recruitment coming in, Barry Ferguson's team left, a new management team came in and he seemed to fall down the pecking order at that stage. Hibs came in and I think they've done some really good business this summer. I think Josh Mulligan will do well for them. CYRIEL DESSERS I would think it'll go through. Again, we're into this July 1 thing and new financial years. I notice, in Greece, PAOK this morning announcing Greg Taylor so it wouldn't surprise me if AEK Athens manage to resolve this little impasse. I can't imagine there's a huge sum of money between AEK and Rangers over Dessers. I think Dessers is keen to go because of the finances, the personal terms on offer to him - 30 years of age, this would be the last big deal of his career. I think Rangers are probably ready to move on from Cyriel Dessers as well. This is a deal that looks to suit all parties. 10 CONOR COADY It's looking as if he's going to come up the road, looking as if he's going to become a Rangers player. I like him as a player, Rangers need centre-backs. Balogun's gone, Kasanwirjo's gone, Fernandes has gone, Propper looks to be heading back to Twente Enschede, John Souttar's battling with an injury and he's only got a year left on his deal as well. Rangers need a bit of a steady hand in there, Conor Coady would be that and it'll be interesting to see the make-up of the Rangers defence. Max Aarons is in and if he's going to play, does that mean Tavernier is going to become a centre-back? JACK BUTLAND They're close to making an appointment for a goalkeeping coach, Sal Bibbo who was at Arsenal in the past, he seems to be the man in the frame. I used to kid people on that goalie coaches just throw a couple of balls at training and it wasn't an important job - it is an important job. I think that's maybe one of the things that affected Jack Butland last season - changes in goalkeeping coaches. I think he needs a bit of consistency, I think the new goalie coach will bring him that consistency. He will be first choice, given what he's paid I think the Rangers board, the people who write the cheques will expect him to be first choice and it's then up to Jack Butland to take the opportunity again as being first choice. The thing with your feet - I'm old fashioned, I like goalies working with their hands and keeping the ball out of the net. You can work on your feet, goalie coaches and outfield coaches can make goalkeepers better with that. Remember Craig Gordon at Celtic, he improved markedly when he was there. I wouldn't worry about Jack Butland's feet. 10 Conor Coady is back in training with Leicester City Credit: Getty 10 Jack Butland will likely start the season a Rangers No1 Credit: Willie Vass Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
