Margao property survey begins amid confusion

Margao: A door-to-door property tax assessment survey commenced in Margao, with surveyors appointed by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) visiting residential and commercial properties across the city to collect detailed data. The survey is part of a state-wide geographical information system (GIS) mapping initiative to create a comprehensive digital property database for improved tax collection and municipal administration. Survey teams are conducting detailed property assessments, including measurements, sketches, and photographs. The project targets revenue leakages in municipal areas and aims to implement capital value-based taxation methods for more accurate property assessments. However, the exercise faced initial challenges as residents expressed confusion and doubted the veracity of the exercise and surveyors, as no adequate awareness was provided about the exercise. Due to poor public awareness, the GSUDA-appointed surveyors faced some tough questioning at some houses they visited. The local councillors handled the situation deftly and reassured them of the survey's legitimacy. 'I got many calls from the residents of Comba, asking me if the survey was genuine. Once I explained to them that it was a govt initiative, they complied and cooperated with the surveyors,' Sagun Naik, a Councillor, said.

Tawadkar reviews Canacona civic projects

Canacona: Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar reviewed the status of the new municipal building and the upcoming fish market project in a meeting at Canacona on Thursday. Director of municipal administration (DMA) Brijesh Manerikar, Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) officers Munna Muzzawar, consultant Datta Kare, contractor, Canacona municipal council chairperson Sara Desai, and councillors were present. A review of the municipal building, including furniture and electrical work, was briefed during the meeting. About 90% of the work is complete, and the contractor has assured that the remaining work will be completed within three months and handed over to GSUDA. Afterwards, GSUDA will hand it over to the municipal authority. The MLA, along with the DMA and GSUDA officials, visited the upcoming fish market site and the old vegetable market. The MLA said the market will be cleaned under the Shram Dham initiative after seeing its pathetic state. Tawadkar said that those allotted market slots must be occupied immediately, or he will allow others to use the space for businesses. He told the municipal authority that such opportunities should not be taken for granted.

Margao Municipal Council and GSUDA trip over red tape, delaying parking project

Margao: Nearly two months after the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) invited expressions of interest (EOI) for Margao's hydraulic parking project, uncertainty over coordination with the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) continues to raise doubts about its implementation. MMC chairperson Damodar Shirodkar said the project 'should happen soon,' with tenders invited after EOIs are finalised. He said work will be completed in 2-3 months by assembling prefabricated components. However, MMC has not fixed clear timelines with GSUDA, and this lack of coordination has raised concerns among stakeholders, given the project's troubled history. The hydraulic system replaced the original Rs 10-crore reinforced cement concrete multi-level parking plan after repeated tender failures. Local businessmen have expressed frustration over the delays. 'We have been hearing about different parking solutions for years now. First, the multilevel parking, now the hydraulic system, but nothing ever materialises,' said a shop owner. Opposition councillors slammed the municipal council for 'announcement politics,' calling it a pattern of grand promises followed by silent abandonment. Margao's parking crisis has persisted for over a decade. In 2011, Congress govt allocated Rs 3 crore as part of a 'golden jubilee package' for infrastructure projects, prioritising the parking facility. Despite a foundation stone ceremony in 2016, the project stalled due to repeated tender failures.

Ponda's Golden Jubilee project gains momentum, 60% work completed

Ponda: With a new contractor having taken up the work, Ponda's Golden Jubilee project has gained momentum. Work of the 13-year-old project was stopped in 2022 after the earlier contractor had given up the task midway. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has now allotted the pending work to a new contractor, Sameer Kinlekar, for Rs 3.3 crore to complete the remaining work. Only the RCC structure of the project was completed between 2012 and 2021. However, about 60% of the work has been completed till now and the new contractor has promised to complete the work by Oct. On June 15, 2021, the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) resolved to change the contractor and re-tender the remaining work. This was to be a signature project depicting the cultural significance of Ponda town with two small multiplexes, a cafeteria or food park and ample parking space. The project was delayed as the contractor had expressed his inability to continue with the work. The construction work of the project was allotted to Sameer Vachasundar, a civil contractor, who completed only the RCC structure. 'The contractor said that he can't afford the work with the old Goa schedule of rates (GSR) and sought a revision as per the new GSR. The contractor had been paid around Rs 2 crore, and was asking for an additional Rs 80 lakh to complete the project,' a PMC official had said. In 2011, former Congress govt had sanctioned Rs 2 crore to each constituency to have the projects to commemorate the golden jubilee year of Goa's Liberation. A foundation stone for the project was laid on Dec 19, 2011.
