4 Houston Astros Trade Targets at 3B Following Isaac Paredes Injury

The Houston Astros struck gold this offseason with the Kyle Tucker trade, acquiring standout outfielder Cam Smith and third baseman Isaac Paredes. Unfortunately, days before the MLB trade deadline, Paredes suffered a significant injury. Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters this week that Paredes is dealing with a 'pretty significant' hamstring injury and that there is no timeline for his return. Following that, ESPN's Jorge Castillo reported that the Astros are now in the trade market for a third baseman. With that in mind, let's examine some Astros trade targets at third base. Ryan McMahon, Colorado Rockies If the Astros want a potential multi-year solution at third base, potentially allowing for Isaac Paredes to become the designated hitter in 2026, Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon is a compelling option. He's under team control through 2027 ($16 million AAV) and is above-average defensively (4 Defensive Runs Save, T-12th). While the offense production leaves a bit to be desired, he has a .744 OPS and a .241/.324/.420 triple-slash line over the last five seasons. He's a very stable option for Houston. Ryan McMahon stats (): .217/.314/.403, .717 OPS, 16 home runs, 35 RBI Related: Ke'Bryan Hayes, Pittsburgh Pirates Among our Astros trade targets at third base, only one can match or exceed the production Isaac Paredes gave the team. Ke'Bryan Hayes isn't that guy, but the Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman is vastly superior to Paredes defensively. The former Gold Glove Award winner leads his position in Defensive Runs Saved with 15, a total equaling the next two players (Benjamin Williamson and Ernie Clement) combined. Hayes is under club control through 2029, earning $7 million annually from 2025 to 2027, then $8 million for 2028–29, with a $12 million club option for 2030. He would instantly provide Houston with elite defense at the hot corner, and his .762 OPS in 2023 shows there is at least some upside with the bat. Ke'Bryan Hayes stats (): .243/.288/.300, .588 OPS, 34 RBI, 34 runs scored, 10 steals Related: Eugenio Suarez, Arizona Diamondbacks The Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez wouldn't just fill the void left in the Astros lineup by Paredes' injury; he would likely exceed that production. Entering MLB games today, Suárez ranks fourth in MLB with 36 home runs and leads the league with 86 RBI. Since he is on an expiring contract, third base would be open for Paredes in 2026. Suárez is even worse defensively (-4 Defensive Runs Saved) than Paredes (-3 DRS), but he is a true middle-of-the-order hitter. Eugenio Suarez stats (): .252/.325/.593, .918 OPS, 36 home runs, 86 RBI, 18 doubles in 369 at-bats Related: Ramon Urias, Baltimore Orioles Houston has a problem. The market is pretty thin at third base, especially if the club only wants a short-term solution. Ke'Bryan Hayes and Ryan McMahon will cost more because they're under contract for multiple seasons and Eugenio Suarez is the best player available at the MLB trade deadline. If the Astros want a cheap solution, Ramon Urias might be the guy. Ramon Urias stats ():.247/.300/.370, .671 OPS, 6 home runs, 30 RBI, 12 doubles The Baltimore Orioles' third baseman has a .671 OPS this season, but he was much better in his previous four years (.732 OPS). He's also above-average defensively, ranking in the 86th percentile for Outs Above Average (3) and is tied with Alex Bregman this season for the eighth-most Defensive Runs Saved (5). The 31-year-old could be a cost-effective option. Related Headlines Worrisome Aaron Judge Elbow Injury Comes at Bad Time for Yankees: How Will it Affect Deadline Plans? Anthony Volpe Responds to 'Frustrating' Error in Critical Yankees' Loss

The New York Yankees have seen Anthony Volpe continue to struggle offensively this season, but his defense has also taken a dive. The Yankees may not have expected Volpe to turn into a key offensive player over the course of one offseason. However, they likely did think they would be able to rely on the 2023 Gold Glove Award winner's defense. Through 99 games, he leads the American League in errors. He made his 12th error on Monday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Volpe fielded a routine ground ball but made a wide throw to Paul Goldschmidt, allowing a runner to score from second base, extending the Blue Jays' lead to 4-1. Volpe spoke on the error after the game, noting he "rushed the throw," according to The Athletic's Brendan Kuty. More Matthew Grimes Jr./"Anytime you get the ball hit to you, you expect it to be an out," Volpe told Kuty. "So, when that doesn't happen, it's frustrating." Volpe currently has a career-low fielding percentage. The Yankees once looked set to run away with the American League East, but now trail the Blue Jays by four games, entering play on Tuesday. Volpe is not the sole reason for the Yankees' struggles, but he is a big part. He plays a premium position defensively and has failed to come through offensively. He is slashing just .214/.286/.394. Even his career-high .680 OPS is below league average. More MLB: Dodgers-Red Sox Blockbuster Trade Idea Would Set Up Both Teams for Postseason

Red Sox Wilyer Abreu Trade Idea Lands All-Star Starter, New First Baseman

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox are returning from the All-Star break with a new lease on the season. After bouncing back from a shocking trade of franchise slugger Rafael Devers, the team strung together a 10-game win streak heading into the break. Now, just ahead of the trade deadline, it looks like the front office will be looking to add some key pieces to fortify a playoff run. "After riding a 10-game winning streak into the break, the Red Sox sure seem headed firmly toward buying mere weeks after offloading Rafael Devers," Zachary Rymer wrote for Bleacher Report. "Starting pitching is atop the list of items they need to address, and they're reportedly aiming as high as Minnesota Twins All-Star Joe Ryan." Though Ryan would be a formidable option alongside team ace Garrett Crochet, Rymer proposed a trade that would bring in a different reigning All-Star starter, along with a new first base option. He proposed a package of outfielder Wilyer Abreu and prospects Franklin Arias and Payton Tolle to the Washington Nationals in exchange for MacKenzie Gore and Nathaniel Lowe. (Photo by) More Taetsch/Getty "Should Boston pivot to Gore, it would be to a younger and arguably better pitcher," Rymer added. "He's what they need in a rotation that is a little too unstable behind Garrett Crochet, while Lowe would likewise stabilize a first base spot that remains unsettled months after Triston Casas' season-ending injury." With the Nationals heading toward seller status, it seems Gore and Lowe could be on the trade block. And they would certainly answer some questions about the Red Sox roster as the team looks to make a playoff run. However, the idea of dealing Abreu could be a non-starter. The Red Sox do have a logjam in the outfield, but Jarren Duran seems more likely as the odd man out. Abreu is a reigning Gold Glove Award winner and his defense in right field would be hard for the team to replace. More MLB: Yankees' Aaron Judge Announces Retirement Decision

Yankees' Anthony Volpe Could Be Facing 'Last Chance,' per Insider

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees could be losing patience as they return from the All-Star break. The team endured a harsh stretch in the last few weeks, giving up its lead in the American League East as several players fell to injury or regressed. Starter Clarke Schmidt has been ruled out for the year and the team cut ties with infielder DJ LeMahieu after some defensive struggles. Now, shortstop Anthony Volpe could be next, according to Yankees insider Bob Klapisch. "The beleaguered shortstop, looking more overwhelmed by the day, was desperately in need of a rest by the time the All-Star break arrived," Klapisch wrote for "He's batting .125 (12-for-96) with a .420 OPS in his last 27 games. If the problem has been fatigue, the Yankees will be out of excuses starting now." (Photo by) More Sloter/Getty Alongside Volpe's harsh slump at the plate this year, he seems to have taken a step back on defense as well. That combination calls out for an upgrade, but the team has remained adamant that they believe he can turn it around. However, if Volpe is unable to string together a better second half, Klapisch believes he could lose his everyday playing time. "Volpe is coming out of a four-day break," Klapisch noted. "He should be fully rested. This could be the kid's last chance to rescue his place in the lineup." After becoming the first rookie in Yankees history to win a Gold Glove Award, Volpe seemed like the long-term answer as a replacement for Derek Jeter. But he's looking increasingly lost and, for a team with determined World Series aspirations, the patience can't last forever. More MLB: Why This Cubs-Braves Trade Idea Makes Perfect Sense

Detroit Tigers ‘strongly' interested in two elite Minnesota relievers

The Detroit Tigers enter the All-Star break with the best record in MLB, but the bullpen has significant holes. Over the last three games against the Seattle Mariners, Detroit's bullpen allowed 15 ninth-inning runs, creating concern for the second half of the year. With the lack of stellar pitching in the bullpen, the Tigers have eyes on two elite relievers in the AL Central. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Tigers are one of many teams showing strong interest in Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax. Duran, 27, was snubbed from the MLB All-Star Game, boasting a 1.66 ERA with 43.1 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Jax, 30, has been better lately after a rough start, but still has a 3.92 ERA with 41.1 innings pitched in 2025. Detroit has the 21st-best bullpen ERA in MLB, and specifically adding Duran as an elite closer would transform the team. Jax was strong in 2024, and a change of scenery could put him back on track. Yet, it all depends on whether Minnesota will sell at the MLB trade deadline, as it currently sits four games back of the final Wild Card spot. If the Twins decide to push for the postseason, the Tigers will still have plenty of options available to improve a bullpen that introduced 'pitching chaos' in 2024. Detroit needs elite relievers that can lead the team in the postseason, and Duran could be what it is looking for over the next two weeks.
