Nigeria: Gombe govt flags off 2025 farming season, rolls out subsidised fertilisers
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on Thursday, flagged off the 2025 farming season with the sales and distribution of the subsidised fertilisers. Inuwa Yahaya announced the procurement of 10,000 tonnes of the input to be sold to farmers at a subsidised rate, in a major step aimed at strengthening agricultural productivity in the state. He said that the quantity represents over twice the volume distributed during the 2024 wet season, which he said is part of a sustained efforts to scale up support for farmers and reinforce the position of Gombe in Nigeria's food security drive. The Governor also stressed that the intervention is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda, which recognises agriculture as a vital pillar for inclusive economic development. He noted that over 80% of the population in Gombe state are engaged in farming, and that over the past six years, his government has consistently subsidized farm inputs to support farmers. 'For the 2025 wet farming season, we have procured 10,000 metric tons (200,000 bags) of NPK 20:10:10 fertiliser at the cost of N44,000 per bag but will be sold to farmers at a subsidised rate of N27,000. 'This gesture underscores our commitment to making agriculture affordable, accessible, and productive. 'As we are all aware, timely access to agricultural inputs is crucial to enhancing agricultural productivity. In this regard, today's flag-off of the sales of fertilisers to the farmers testifies to our commitment to ensuring timely and affordable access to agricultural inputs for farmers,' he said. Inuwa pointed out several initiatives undertaken to revamp the agricultural landscape in Gombe State which include strategic partnerships with the Federal Government, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank through various projects such as the Sasakawa African Association, NG-CARES, L-PRES, RAAMP, and ACReSAL– all of which have improved productivity and enhanced food security. He also cited the ongoing Agro-Livestock Development Zone project comprising an international livestock and grains market, commercial abattoir, and an inland dry port, along with the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, where Premier Seeds Nigeria Limited has commenced operations with a seed-processing facility as part of ongoing efforts to actualizing his administration's desire of positioning Gombe as regional centre of agro-based commerce in the North-east subregion. The Governor directed the Ministry of Agriculture, security agencies, and civil society organizations to monitor the distribution process and ensure the fertilizer reaches the intended beneficiaries up to unit level. He said, 'I would like to assure you that we shall ensure that the fertiliser reaches the grassroots by strengthening the fertiliser sales monitoring system. 'I have directed the Ministry of Agriculture, security agencies, and civil society organizations to closely monitor the sales and distribution to the farmers so as to prevent against diversion and ensure that the fertilizer reaches the correct beneficiaries.' He urged farmers to make good use of these inputs and to remain vigilant against natural hazards by adhering to weather advisories for the 2025 farming season. The Governor also called for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, emphasising the need to respect grazing reserves and farmlands, while reiterating his administration's support for the Farmers/Herders Prevention and Settlement of Disputes Committees and security agencies to prevent conflict and maintain peace across the state. However, the Governor has again warned traditional rulers against involvement in cases of encroachment on cattle routes and grazing reserves, which is fueling the crisis between farmers and herders in the state, vowing that anyone found culpable in the reports of the Farmers/Herders Prevention and Dispute Settlement Committees will face stringent punishment based on the recommendations of the committees. In a goodwill message, the Acting State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Absalom Akwaras Lansibol, commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his vision and commitment to agricultural growth. He said, 'The Governor's steadfast commitment to agricultural transformation in Gombe is inspiring. Today marks another milestone in our effort to secure livelihoods and ensure food security. I encourage continued collaboration for the success of this fertiliser distribution exercise.' He reaffirmed the Federal Government's support for the initiatives of Governor Inuwa Yahaya in the agricultural sector, urging all stakeholders to align with the transformative vision for national agricultural prosperity. Earlier in his welcome address, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Dr. Barnabas M. Malle, expressed gratitude to the Governor for sustaining his support to farmers despite the economic challenges, stating that the Governor's resilience has made it possible for the government to procure farm inputs and distribute same to farmers at a lower rate at a time when many doubted it could happen.

Nigeria: Gombe gov reiterates commitment to sustainable economic reforms
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has reiterated the commitment of his administration to sustainable economic reforms and infrastructure development. The Governor made the assertion when the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) held a sub-national stakeholders' engagement session and a statewide Town Hall Meeting in Gombe State, aimed at assessing the state's performance on business-enabling reforms and strengthening alignment with national economic initiatives. The session, which brought together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, was designed to deepen the implementation of the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) and promote inclusive growth through improved regulatory environments at the state level. Inuwa Yahaya, represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Muhammad Gambo Magaji, described the engagement as both timely and strategic. He emphasized that the recognition of Gombe as the top-ranking state in Nigeria for Ease of Doing Business is the result of intentional policies, strong political will, and robust administrative reforms. According to him, 'Our administration has streamlined business registration processes, reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks, digitized land administration systems, and introduced investor-friendly tax policies.' The Governor added that, 'We have also maintained a stable macroeconomic environment with consistent policies that inspire investor confidence, reinforced by the rule of law, low crime rates, and a pro-business regulatory framework.' Inuwa Yahaya further highlighted key infrastructure projects including the Special Agro-Processing and Export Free Zone, the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, and the ultra-modern livestock development zone, as milestones of his administration's drive to create an enabling environment for investment and economic diversification. Delivering her remarks, the Director General of PEBEC, Princess Zahra Mustapha Audu, commended Gombe State for its outstanding performance in business reforms. In his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Tourism, Nasiru Mohammed Aliyu, praised PEBEC for its efforts in strengthening Nigeria's economic competitiveness, especially at the sub-national level. He reaffirmed the state's alignment with the national agenda for a business-friendly environment that promotes innovation, productivity, and inclusive growth. Gombe State Government, under the leadership of Governor Inuwa Yahaya, believes it has done more than enough to earn the position of best state in Ease of Doing Business again. And the numbers tell a convincing story. Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has jumped from below N1 billion in 2019 to over N28 billion today. The state attracts more than $100 million in foreign direct investment annually. More than 1.5 million residents are engaged in skilled and unskilled labour, thanks to a growing private sector. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) estimates the state's GDP at $55.5 billion, with investment returns of over 20 percent, particularly in agriculture, renewable energy, and light industry. Much of this progress, state officials say, is the result of deliberate reforms and focused leadership. Processes for registering businesses have been simplified. Land administration has been digitised. The state has also introduced tax policies that are friendly to investors, especially small and medium enterprises. The Gombe administration has also placed a premium on infrastructure development. The Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park has become a magnet for investment. A seed company recently commissioned there by former President Olusegun Obasanjo stands as evidence that Gombe is now firmly on the map for serious business ventures. Other major projects such as the Special Agro-Processing and Export Free Zone and the International Grains Market have further boosted investor confidence. Nigeria: Gombe govt signs multi-billion naira contract for 18km gully erosion control project
The Gombe State Government on Wednesday signed a multi-billion Naira contract for an 18km gully erosion control project within Gombe metropolitan city, aimed at protecting residents from annual flooding that has long defied solution. Speaking at the official contract signing ceremony and groundbreaking for the GGMC Doma Gully Erosion Control Project—held at Hayin Misau in Gombe Metropolis—Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya reiterated his administration's commitment to environmental sustainability and the protection of lives and livelihoods across the state. The project, which spans 18 kilometres, is designed to mitigate one of the most severe gully erosion problems affecting the area. Governor Inuwa Yahaya, in his address, reaffirmed that since assuming office in 2019, his administration has prioritised environmental protection and public safety. He highlighted several strategic interventions introduced under his leadership, starting with the flagship Gombe Goes Green (3G) project, which has resulted in the planting of over five million trees to combat desertification and support environmental regeneration. He further cited successful erosion control projects carried out under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) and Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), including the GSU gully reclamation, the 21km FCE(T) gully control, and the 7.5km erosion corridor stretching from International Hotel to the Commissioner of Police's residence. The Governor announced that compensation would be paid to all individuals affected within the 10-metre buffer zone of the project area. He added that the project would also empower local communities by providing resilience-building support, such as fishponds, poultry farms, and other sustainable livelihood initiatives. The GGMC Doma project was awarded to Triacta Nigeria Limited at a contract sum of ₦48.6 billion, with a completion timeframe of 30 months. 'I extend my profound appreciation to the ACReSAL National Coordination Office led by Dr Abdulhamid Umar and the World Bank Task Team Lead, Dr Joy Iganya Agene, for their sustained technical and financial support. I also thank all stakeholders involved in this transformative effort,' the Governor stated. He urged residents to take ownership of the project and protect it from vandalism, describing it as a collective investment and a legacy for future generations. Governor Yahaya also flagged off the compensation payment, presenting symbolic cheques to affected individuals. Additionally, he commissioned the distribution of agricultural and mobility assets, including 12 tractors, 3 Hilux utility vehicles, 12 tricycles, and 1 Hiace bus, to enhance agricultural productivity and environmental resilience. In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Environment, Forest and Water Resources, Hon. Saidu Mohammed Fawu, revealed that over 200 active gullies exist across the state. He noted that past interventions such as the 21km FCE(T) gully project have safeguarded nine vulnerable communities and that more than ₦2.1 billion has been disbursed as compensation. According to him, 'We estimate that over 1.8 million people will directly or indirectly benefit from this intervention,' he added, urging the contractors to ensure timely and high-quality delivery. Also speaking, Chairman of Akko Local Government Area, Hon. Muhammad Danladi Adamu, expressed deep gratitude to the Governor for the life-saving initiative. 'For years, communities around this gully have suffered. Many administrations came and went, making empty promises. But today, we are witnessing real, tangible transformation,' he said. He described the Bogo–Hayin Misau Bridge and erosion control works as iconic, saying they have brought safety and renewed hope to numerous residents. He also commended other impactful projects executed in Akko, including roads, healthcare, and education. Hon. Musa Muhammad Wuro Biriji, Member representing Akko North in the Gombe State House of Assembly, echoed similar sentiments. 'We've raised our voices for years, but only now under Governor Inuwa Yahaya have our cries been heard. We feel seen, heard, and supported.' Managing Director of Triacta Nigeria Limited, Engr. Eli Abu Fahad, assured the state government and its citizens of timely and high-quality delivery. 'This is not just a contract, it's a mission to save lives and preserve the environment. We are committed to excellence in every aspect of execution,' he said. In a goodwill message, the Lamido of Gona, His Royal Highness Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdussalam, commended the prioritisation of erosion control, describing it as essential for land preservation, food security, and sustainable development. He also lauded the Governor for ensuring that compensation was provided to affected residents. 'This is not merely an engineering feat, it is a legacy of protection, prosperity, and environmental stewardship,' the royal father remarked. Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr Sani Adamu Jauro, State Coordinator of the ACReSAL Project, noted that the 21km FCE(T) gully erosion control project had reached 98% completion and had attracted commendation from the World Bank and other partners. 'Security has improved, school enrolment is rising, health risks are declining, and the quality of life is improving significantly in the impacted communities,' he said. He emphasised that all activities are in alignment with the Development Agenda for Gombe State (DEVAGOM), which serves as the blueprint for Governor Yahaya's inclusive and sustainable development vision. Speaking on behalf of the host communities, Dr Sadiq Adamu, Chairman of the Hayin Misau Development Association, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Governor for turning a long-standing dream into reality. 'Since 1967, this bridge and gully intervention were mere political promises. You are the first leader who have turned it into a reality,' he said. He praised the resilience and foresight of the Inuwa Yahaya-led administration and pledged the community's support in safeguarding the project and ensuring its long-term impact. Nigeria: Gombe govt approves construction of over 74km of rural roads
The Gombe State Executive Council (SEC), presided over by the State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on Wednesday approved the construction of over 74 kilometres of rural roads, alongside several capital projects and compensation packages aimed at accelerating infrastructure development across the state. This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Ethical Orientation, Hon. Mijinyawa Ardo Tilde, during a press briefing following the 46th State Executive Council Meeting held at the EXCO Chamber, Government House, Gombe. According to Hon. Tilde, the Council also ratified the handover of Kumo General Hospital to the Federal Government for its conversion into a Federal Medical Centre. Providing further details, the Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Engr. Usman Maijama'a Kallamu, explained that the 74.69 kilometres of rural roads approved will be executed in collaboration with the World Bank-supported Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), across four Local Government Areas. Engr. Kallamu noted that the approved roads include: 25km Kembu–Kidda–Panda–Garin Alhaji Road in Akko LGA; 18km Kwanan Daniya–Daban Fulani–Bajoga Magaba Road in Funakaye LGA; and 31km Dukku–Zaune Road in Dukku LGA. According to him, 'The counterpart funding approved for these projects, and others previously executed under RAAMP, amounts to ₦3 billion.' In a related development, the Council approved ₦545 million as augmentation for the Kumo–Luggerewo–Papa Road to ensure its timely completion, with the contractor given a one-month deadline to finalise the work. For the long-delayed Ture–Gelengu Road, originally awarded by a previous administration, the Council approved an augmentation of ₦7.6 billion, reflecting the rising cost of materials due to inflation and exchange rate fluctuations. In Balanga LGA, the government approved ₦2.4 billion for the construction of a 4.5km road linking Talasse Road to Balanga Gari, with a completion timeline of eight months. Speaking on financial matters, the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Hon. Muhammad Gambo Magaji, announced several strategic funding approvals, including support for the 2025 Hajj operations. 'In line with the National Hajj Commission's requirements and to ease financial transactions for our pilgrims, the state government provided $481,000, representing $500 per pilgrim for 969 intending pilgrims. We received a reimbursement of ₦769 million from NAHCON in Naira to facilitate this,' he explained. Additionally, the Council ratified the release of ₦334 million in compensation for properties affected by road projects under the BAP 4 initiative and the dualisation of the road from Police Headquarters Junction to FCT(T). The Executive Council also approved ₦5.2 billion as counterpart funding for the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) projects for 2024 and the first quarter of 2025. Approval was also granted for the release of the remaining 2025 counterpart funds when due. A major highlight of the approvals is the compensation for communities affected by the multi-billion Naira gully erosion control project to be executed under the World Bank-funded ACReSAL Project. The affected corridor runs from Abdullahi Ganduje Road to Government Girls Science Secondary School, Doma, covering approximately 30 kilometres. To further boost industrial development, the Council approved ₦5.5 billion for the completion of the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, a flagship economic project initiated four years ago. The funds will be used to provide critical infrastructure and facilities required for the park to commence full operations. 'So far, more than nine companies have either completed or are setting up their facilities at the park. Once completed, it will position Gombe State as a major industrial hub, attract investments, and create wealth and jobs for our people,' said Hon. Gambo Magaji. To ensure continued access to potable water in Gombe metropolis and its environs, the Council approved ₦2.1 billion for the annual operation and maintenance of the Gombe Regional Water Supply Project, managed by GCC Company since its inception in 2007, as stated in a release by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director-General (Press Affairs), Government House, Gombe.
