The #1 Early Sign of Osteoporosis Most People Miss, According to Orthopedists

The #1 Early Sign of Osteoporosis Most People Miss, According to Orthopedists originally appeared on Parade. Osteoporosis often goes undiagnosed because many patients don't experience any symptoms—until they actually fracture a bone. "That is particularly the trouble with osteoporosis," , of the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic tells Parade. "There are no consistent symptoms to look for, up until an individual experiences a fragility fracture. That is why good surveillance is so important."So, what are some warning signs that should be looked out for? Common signs of osteoporosis, besides a fragility fracture, can include losing height (shrinking) and changes in posture. However, some patients may exhibit another early sign of osteoporosis that most people don't associate with their bone One of the most commonly missed early signs of osteoporosis is actually in your mouth. Receding gums can be an early symptom of osteoporosis, explains , sports medicine board-certified orthopedic surgeon and medical advisor to The Good Feet Store and Kartik Antani, DMD, of Napa Family Dental of Albuquerque, agrees, saying there is a key reason for the link between osteoporosis and gum recession."Gum disease can be caused by many different factors, and there are multiple types of gum disease," Dr. Antani says. "The least invasive is gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums above the bone level. The most aggressive type is periodontitis, which is when the bone around the tooth starts to become damaged. Often, people see the gums receding and think it's 'just the gum,' and sometimes it is just the soft tissue. But more often than not, it's actually the underlying bone that's being degraded. Osteoporosis is a bone disease, so it only makes sense that people with osteoporosis are at a higher risk of periodontitis."Related: Osteoporosis can manifest itself in a number of ways. According to Dr. Mehta, other commonly missed signs and symptoms of osteoporosis can include the following: If your bone density decreases in your forearms, hips and spine, studies have shown that you may experience difficulty gripping items, making a fist, opening jars and other activities using your fingers and hands. Both bones and fingernails contain disulfide bonds that connect proteins together. If you have osteoporosis, you may have brittle nails that chip or break easily—and the same may happen to your bones. Dr. Mehta explains that if you experience shortness of breath, it could be linked to osteoporosis because discs in your spine may be compressed enough to reduce your lung One good thing about osteoporosis is that you can take measures to prevent it or at least keep it from getting worse."While much of the risk [of] osteoporosis is determined by your genetics, there are things you can do to support good bone health," Dr. Betsy Batcher, MD, medical director for endocrinology, Intermountain Health Canyons Region, says. There is some evidence that plant-based diets, adequate protein intake and avoidance of excessive caffeine are beneficial as well. While these actions are important for overall health and fall risk, lifestyle interventions with the use of a proven medication are the most effective way to prevent fractures in patients at high risk. Some of these measures include: If you smoke, vape or use any other form of tobacco, quit! If not, good—don't start. Excessive alcohol intake may impact your bone health, so reconsider using wine to wind down or doing extra shots at a party. "People who are not staying active and are doing mild impact activities tend to have more trouble with osteoporosis than those who are more active," Dr. Gallagher Batcher recommends a combination of regular weight-bearing exercises like walking or running, strength training and balance-building workouts. Getting enough calcium and vitamin D is crucial for bone health, Dr. Batcher advises. While she says it's ideal for you to get your calcium through your diet, you can opt for a vitamin D supplement of 800-1000 international units (IU) per day."Low-fat dairy; leafy green vegetables; fish; and fortified juices, milk and grains are good sources of calcium," Dr. Mehta says. "If your vitamin D level is low, you can discuss it with your doctor and consider a supplement." Genetics plays a big role in osteoporosis, Dr. Gallagher says, so it's important to know your family history of osteoporosis, if any, and to get regular screenings. You should also let all of your doctors know about your potential predisposition to osteoporosis so they know to look for warning signs."All people aged 65 and older should be screened regardless of risk factors, and postmenopausal women and men aged 50 to 70 years when risk factors are present," Dr. Gallagher explains. "Data has shown improved outcomes when multidisciplinary teams are engaged in fracture care. Orthopedic surgeons are great at caring for fractures, but I've seen the best outcomes when they work closely with bone metabolic specialists. Individuals who sustained one fragility fracture are at a much higher rate for a second, so early medical intervention after a fragility fracture is critical."
