The Who set to 'come out of retirement and do an Elton John' after final gig
EXCLUSIVE: The Who were previously left in turmoil after drummer Zak Starkey left the band but they've been tipped to continue touring The Who won't retire and are set to follow in the footsteps of Elton John with one pal saying: 'It's not the end.' The rockers previously told how they are retiring from touring following 60 years together after a final set of dates in North America. The tour, which begins in August, will be a farewell to live shows for the legendary rock band, with Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey performing hits from their six-decade career. But Journalist Will Hodgkinson, a close pal of the band, regularly hosts press conferences for them after penning The Ballad of Britain about The Who and other bands' cultural significance in shaping British musical identity, said: 'I think they might do what Elton John has done. Elton has done the Palladium for a special. 'I can see them doing something like that. I think it's got too much for them being on tour. But I don't think it will be the end.' Elton announced that he was quitting music with his final epic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour. But he has since returned with a special date at The Palladium in London. The Who were recently left in turmoil after drummer Zak Starkey left the band. But Will says they will 'cope fine' without him. He continued: 'The Zak Starkey thing was odd. I guess they fell out. I guess that's what happened. They had an argument. But Zak didn't talk about it at all when I saw him a few weeks ago. I think they will cope fine.' He added: 'I don't know who it will be or if indeed they've already got someone.' Will's latest book titled Street Level Superstar is about failed pop star Lawrence who he spent a year shadowing in a bid to uncover a true 'uncompromising' artist. Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Pete Townsend and Noel Gallagher are all fans of the little known star who fronted 1990s band Denim. The book won the prestigious Penderyn Music Book prize last year and has become a cult classic (MUST) while Denim's nearly famous record Summer Smash is being re-released. Will said: 'I think it took off because failure is more interesting than success. I was very reticent. But I really enjoyed it. I thought creatively this could be really good. This is somebody who is at odds with the world. He looks like a superstar but there he is with no money whatsoever getting shouted at by kids at the bus stop, mistaken for an old lady by an old man outside the pub. I thought this was amazing. When he walks down the street he thinks he is Prince.' The Who's Townsend even said he wants to be like Lawrence - a former heroin addict - because he's such an 'uncompromising' artist.

Lola Young speechless as Elton John gushes over 'real' star after 'dark things'
Globally renowned singer Lola Young talks to Elton John about her flourishing music career as the legend describes her single Dealer as 'the biggest smash' he's heard in years Music sensation Lola Young took the world by storm when she released her hit single Messy last year. And while she gained a legion of fans the world over, it seems there was one unlikely person who quickly became her number one fan - step forward Sir Elton John. In a candid chat with the music icon on his Rocket Hour podcast on Apple Music 1, the man behind hits including Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Candle In The Wind, described her single Dealer as "the biggest smash I've heard in years." Speaking about her single from her upcoming album I'm Only F***king Myself, Elton tells her: "I have to say, after listening to the album ['I'm Only F**king Myself'], there's a track on your album which would be the next single, I'm going to tell everyone it's called 'Dealer'." He added: "And if that isn't Number 1, I bet my house that that's the Number 1 single. I bet my house. It is f**king amazing. It's unbelievable. It's the biggest smash I've heard in years." The London born singer and songwriter, 24, who studied at the BRIT School, was propelled into global fame when she launched her song Messy, which drew the attention of the good and the great within the music industry. During their chat, Elton described the hit single as "great" and praised her for performing in her own video. He continued: "Messy' was the record that really launched you into the stratosphere. It was such a great song and I loved the video because you were performing in the video and you thought, 'Wow, this is a proper artist.'" During their chat, he went on to say: "This is a real artist. This isn't some pop star who's doing a video of miming and so forth." He added: "This girl is unreal. I don't want to make comparisons, but Raye is the same as you, she's a great artist, she gives out so much of herself. " He then went on to say: "What I love about you, you are there. What you see with Lola Young is what you get. " Elton explained: "And what you get is f**king great … Well, the thing about you is that you are authentic. And there are so many girls around now that are authentic. The girls are truly leading the charge." But it looks as though Lola is just as enamoured by Elton as he is of her. Speaking about what his encouraging words mean to her, she replied: "Thank you, Elton. This means so much to me. You have no idea. I'm just so grateful to be sitting here with you." She continued: "I'm honestly taken aback by how much has gone on in my life. But also things, moments like this, talking to someone like you is just an incredible moment ... " She added: "I have gone through a lot and I've really managed to pull out the other side of a lot of dark things. Thank you for having me. Music is so powerful and I'm able to do that now in a way where I'm in such a head space for it to take on what's happening, to take on the success and all of that."

Elton John Earns A Milestone New No. 1 With His Friend
Elton John is back at No. 1 in the U.K., and this time, he's not alone. The music legend returns to the summit of the Official Albums chart this frame with a brand new release — and a new collaborator credited alongside him on the throne. His latest studio effort doesn't just launch in the top spot, it also helps him reach an important career milestone. Who Believes in Angels?, a collaborative project between John and Brandi Carlile, opens at No. 1 on the Official Albums chart. That roster tracks the most-consumed EPs and full-lengths in the U.K., and this time around, it's the two powerhouse talents who jointly claim the highest spot. The collection was introduced to fans with a handful of tunes, though it seems the chart-topping start is thanks largely to John's continued popularity in his home country and Carlile's growing base of support in the U.K., as now massive win has yet emerged from the set. With Who Believes in Angels?, John claims his tenth No. 1 title in the U.K. He first reached the top all the way back in 1973 with Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. That win kicked off a decades-spanning run that includes chart rulers like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou, Sleeping with the Past, and Diamonds, which needed some time before eventually rising to the summit. In 2021, he returned to No. 1 with The Lockdown Sessions, his most recent brand new release before this one. He also hit the peak with The Very Best of Elton John, his collaborative remix album Good Morning to the Night with PNAU, and his Greatest Hits compilation. This new release gives Carlile her very first U.K. chart-topper. It's not just the main albums tally that Who Believes in Angels? dominates this time around. The set starts at No. 1 on a total of five U.K. rankings this frame. In addition to leading the Official Albums chart, the release also rules the Official Album Sales, Official Album Downloads, Official Physical Albums, and Official Vinyl Albums rosters. While Who Believes in Angels? commands the spotlight, it's not the only John project that's present on the U.K. music rankings this week. His perennial favorite Diamonds is also showing that it's still a favorite on several charts. The compilation, which features many of his most iconic cuts, continues as a staple in the U.K., especially when it comes to platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. This frame, Diamonds lifts to No. 14 on the Official Albums chart. At the same time, it climbs to No. 8 on the Official Albums Streaming tally. The project also manages a comeback on the Official Album Downloads list, re-entering at No. 83. The set has previously reached No. 1 on all of these tallies, and it remains one of John's most commercially reliable titles.
