Snowflake unveils AI tools for data analytics, migration
Snowflake has revealed new artificial intelligence (AI) products aimed at simplifying data analytics and accelerating migration from legacy systems for organisations across Canada and globally. The company announced its expansion of enterprise-grade AI with the introduction of Cortex AISQL and SnowConvert AI, designed to enable customers to extract insights from diverse data types while reducing operational costs and complexity. Cortex AISQL incorporates generative AI directly into database queries, allowing teams to analyse and act on multiple kinds of data—ranging from structured numbers to text, images and audio—while using the SQL syntax familiar to data professionals. The solution is intended to bring what Snowflake describes as "industry-leading performance and up to 60% cost savings when filtering or joining data." Organisations such as Hex, Sigma, and TS Imagine are among those already leveraging the capabilities of Cortex AISQL. SnowConvert AI addresses a common challenge faced by enterprises: moving data from existing warehouse and analytics platforms to modern systems. The tool uses AI automation to ease migrations from providers such as Oracle, Teradata, and Google BigQuery, reducing the need for manual re-coding and lowering the risks typically associated with large-scale data projects. "Every organization recognizes the potential of AI. But too often, harnessing AI means overcoming complex infrastructure, performance limitations, high costs, and a reliance on engineers to build custom pipelines. Snowflake's Cortex AISQL harnesses generative AI—powered by models from providers such as Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, and OpenAI—to introduce advanced query functions into standard SQL. The result is that data analysts can use AI-powered functionalities within the security perimeter of the existing data cloud, without requiring specialist coding or external tools. According to Snowflake, ongoing performance optimisations have demonstrated between 30% and 70% improvements depending on the dataset, and up to 60% cost savings for certain operations. The integration enables organisations to break down traditional data silos. For example, analysts can merge structured customer data with unstructured data like chat transcripts, images, or social media content, and perform tasks including image classification, call transcript analysis and anomaly detection entirely through SQL queries. SnowConvert AI, meanwhile, is designed to make IT infrastructure upgrades more efficient, automating code conversion, report migration and data validation to streamline the transition to new platforms. By accelerating the code conversion and testing phases by two to three times, the tool is aimed at reducing the overall timeline and resource demands associated with digital transformation. Alongside these tools, Snowflake also announced updates to its platform to further support analytics on open source data formats such as Apache Iceberg tables, and launched Standard Warehouse - Generation 2, which introduces hardware and software improvements to boost analytics performance by 2.1 times over previous editions. With the introduction of these AI-powered features, Snowflake is positioning its data cloud as a central platform for enterprises seeking to modernise analytics and data handling capabilities, and to extract actionable business insights from both structured and unstructured sources.

Neo4j launches serverless graph analytics platform for all users
Neo4j has released Neo4j Aura Graph Analytics, a serverless graph analytics solution designed to operate across any data source without requiring extract, load, and transfer (ETL) processes. The new offering reportedly enables a broader pool of users to conduct graph analytics, traditionally a specialist discipline, by eliminating the need for custom queries, ETL pipelines, or detailed knowledge of graph technologies. It supports integration with a wide range of database and cloud data warehouse providers including Oracle, Microsoft SQL, Databricks, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and Microsoft OneLake, alongside compatibility with all major cloud environments. Graph analytics is engineered to assist with decision-making in artificial intelligence (AI) applications by identifying patterns and connections in complex datasets. According to Neo4j, the technique delivers more accurate insights than conventional analytics, yet has often been perceived as accessible only to data scientists and advanced analytics practitioners. Neo4j Aura Graph Analytics introduces more than 65 pre-built graph algorithms prepared for users who may not have prior experience with the Cypher query language or similar technologies. Neo4j notes that the system supports highly parallelised in-memory processing, enabling analytics to be conducted twice as fast as some open-source alternatives, and allows for unlimited concurrent sessions by different organisational users. The platform is accessible directly via Python, and users can exploit familiar tools such as Pandas dataframes to project, analyse, and visualise enterprise data without additional ETL requirements. Neo4j reports a 75% reduction in required coding as the solution removes the need to manually build models for each new analysis. The serverless model absolves the organisation of infrastructure administration, with users only paying for resources used. Support for other widely-used programming languages is planned for later in the year, with a specific native integration for Snowflake expected to become generally available by the third quarter of the financial year. Neo4j's expansion of its analytical capabilities with serverless deployments is a response to increased demand for AI-ready and analytical solutions, according to the company. Papa Johns will use Google AI for analytics, marketing

Papa Johns announced Thursday a partnership with Google Cloud to use Google data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence chatbots in its ordering and delivery processes. Papa Johns expects the partnership to increase ticket size, frequency and customer satisfaction scores while reducing the cost of customer service. The pizza chain has created an 'innovation team,' called PJX, to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the partnership. Papa Johns' PJX team will pursue at least five key projects as the tech arms race heats up among QSR heavyweights. The most interesting of those strategic priorities is the deployment of a Google Cloud-based point-of-sale system, which Papa Johns said will set the stage for AI-driven dispatching, delivery route optimization and automation of unspecified restaurant processes. PJX will try to anticipate customer needs and use Google BigQuery, Vertex AI and Gemini to 'proactively suggest orders through push notifications or email, based on learned customer preferences and anticipated needs,' the company said. The pizza brand will also feed its internal data into Google's generative AI tools to improve personalization of its web and app experiences by 'presenting unique discount codes or advertisements based on previous orders, customer preferences, location and more,' in real time. Additionally, Papa Johns said the partnership would help it predict ordering behaviors and generate AI-powered marketing campaigns. Papa Johns will turn over much of its customer experience management to AI bots. The pizza chain plans to integrate AI-voice ordering into its app and 'build an AI-powered chatbot that can handle common customer inquiries, seamlessly escalating complex issues to live agents.' Whether the use of chatbots will actually improve consumer experiences is open to question. AI chatbots have a documented tendency to invent inaccurate information. The computational demands of AI have driven up greenhouse gas emissions at Google, Microsoft and other tech giants. Bloomberg has reported the energy intensity of AI data centers is endangering corporate climate commitments. According to Papa Johns' 2024 Corporate Responsibility Report, the pizza brand is committed to sustainably managing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental concerns. Papa Johns did not immediately respond to a request for comment on AI's accuracy and emissions problems, or on whether generative AI represented a qualitative improvement on other forms of data analytics. Same-store sales at the pizza brand have been uneven in recent years, ranging from positive 3% in Q3 2023 to negative 6% in Q3 2024. To combat this, CEO Todd Penegor, who joined the brand from Wendy's in mid-2024, is pushing the brand to focus on its core pizzas and to improve its market density through development. If the AI partnership is successful at raising tickets and transactions, or if it lowers the cost of customer service for the brand, it could help Papa Johns focus on its core strategies. Papa Johns is one of many restaurant companies looking to cash in on the AI boom. Yum Brands recently signed a deal with Nvidia, a major AI developer, to build more analytics and AI tools. Wendy's is speeding up the deployment of drive-thru voice AI. And Hi Auto, a QSR-focused voice AI tech firm, recently announced a $15 million funding round to help it develop and deploy its AI tools.
