Kane Bags Double as Bayern Tame Flamengo to Set Up PSG Clash

Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich tamed Flamengo 4-2 in a tense affair at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday to set up a much-anticipated all-European quarter-final against Paris St Germain at the Club World Cup. Erick Pulgar's own goal opened the scoring for Bayern and Leon Goretzka was also on target for the German side, while Flamengo, who were defensively naive, twice reduced the deficit through Gerson and Jorginho. Backed by a raucous crowd, Flamengo played with aggression, but Bayern converted all their shots on target and reaped the rewards of a fast start, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes. "It was tough. We were playing against a really good side in difficult conditions, it was really hot," Kane said. "I thought we played well for large spells but every time we got away they clawed their way back and made it difficult. The fourth goal was important to ease the nerves and from there we managed it well." Earlier on Sunday, Champions League winners PSG sent a brutal reminder of their firepower when they cruised past Inter Miami 4-0, taking their foot off the pedal after the break in what could have turned into a humiliation for Lionel Messi's MLS team. Bayern got off to a flying start, opening the scoring in the sixth minute when Pulgar deflected a corner kick into his own net. Three minutes later, Kane doubled the advantage with a low shot that went in off the post. Flamengo got into something of a groove and went close in the 15th minute, only for Manuel Neuer to save Luiz Araujo's effort from point-blank range. Shortly after the cooling break, the Brazilian side pulled one back as Gerson fired a missile that went in off the underside of the bar, triggering a deafening roar from the crowd. Bayern, however, restored their two-goal lead before the interval when Goretzka, capitalizing on the space left by the Flamengo defense, whipped a shot from outside the box past keeper Agustin Rossi. Tempers flared after a poor challenge by Pulgar on Kane as Flamengo struggled to contain their frustration. Filipe Luis's side pulled one back again 10 minutes into the second half, Jorginho sending Neuer the wrong way after they were awarded a penalty for a Michael Olise handball. The momentum had swung and Flamengo threatened with quick breaks, but Bayern held firm before finding the back of the net once more through Kane, who beat Rossi with another clinical low shot in the 73rd minute.

Harry Kane scores double - including brilliant long-range strike - as Bayern Munich win six-goal thriller against Flamengo to reach Club World Cup quarter-finals

Harry Kane scored two goals as Bayern Munich beat Flamengo 4-2 on Sunday to book a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup. His first was a superb left-footed strike from long range, which put his side 2-0 up in the ninth minute after an Erick Pulgar own goal had given Bayern an early lead. Kane then bagged again in the second half, this time with his right foot, after Leon Goretzka had also found the net. Flamengo twice pulled goals back to close to within one of Bayern, first through Gerson and then courtesy of a penalty kick converted by former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho. But the German champions rarely looked in danger. Bayern will now face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals, after the Champions League winners thrashed Inter Miami 4-0 earlier on Sunday. 💥 Brilliant from Kane! The England captain collected the ball on the turn midway inside the Flamengo half. He then rode what appeared to be foul by a Flamengo player before smashing home a low shot from 23 yards. Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka prepared for next challenge, even if it's not in Germany

Leon Goretzka has logged more than 1,300 minutes in ten consecutive Bundesliga seasons. The last seven campaigns have occurred at Bayern Munich, winning six Meisterschalen and the coveted Champions League final in 2020. Unfortunately, Goretzka's consistency and efforts have not always been appreciated by the decision makers at Säbener Straße. Goretzka knows that he could be transferred at any moment, although his €13M salary and desire to stay in Munich is a high barrier for potential suitors. Advertisement With his contract expiring in 2026 at the age of 31, Goretzka understands that he may not be able to finish out his career in the Bundesliga. 'Physically, I don't feel at all like I'm approaching the end of my career,' said Goretzka (via @iMiaSanMia). 'In fact, I feel fitter than ever before. I hopefully still have a few years ahead of me, so I wouldn't rule [a move abroad] out. But it's not an urgent topic.' Goretzka's relentless work ethic has endeared him to the Bayern faithful. If this is his last year with the club, he wants to go out with a bang and another trophy (or three). Leon Goretzka ‘very happy' at Bayern Munich

Just last summer it looked as though Leon Goretzka had no future at Bayern Munich after falling out of favour when he wasn't even named in the matchday squad, but the 30-year-old has since returned to top form and has earned the trust of Vincent Kompany. Speaking ahead of Bayern Munich's FIFA Club World Cup game against Benfica, Goretzka discussed his future at the Rekordmeister in the mixed zone. Advertisement 'I'm very happy to be at Bayern,' he told journalists in Charlotte, as quoted by Kerry Hau. On his position last summer, Goretzka added: 'That was discussed sufficiently. It started off difficult for me but somewhere in the middle of the first half of the season, I was needed again.' Following the appointment of Kompany, Goretzka felt immediate trust. 'To be honest, I had the feeling from the start that I was highly valued by the coach, and it's stayed that way. The coach is the most important person in the club for me.' On his performances and future, Goretzka added: 'I think I managed to help the team last year and I'm confident I can do the same next season.' GGFN | Daniel Pinder

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka responds to Manchester United transfer rumours

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has made it clear he intends to stay at the club, while addressing rumours of a potential move to Manchester United. United are aiming for a squad overhaul this summer as they try to reshape the squad to suit Ruben Amorim and his football philosophy. Advertisement So far, United's primary focus has been on bolstering the attacking department after a goal-shy 2024/25 campaign. The Red Devils have already announced the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers while a deal for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo is believed to be close to completion. United are also in the market for a striker, with the likes of Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP), Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig) and Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace), among the players mentioned to be on the club's radar. But, United's ambitions don't end there and there have been suggestions that a midfield signing is also on the cards, although this is likely dependent on player sales. Christian Eriksen is expected to officially leave the club at the end of the month when his contract expires, while Casemiro has once again attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League. Advertisement United already had a pressing need for midfield reinforcements even with Eriksen and Casemiro still on the books, but that urgency will only intensify if both players depart. According to German journalist Christian Falk, there have been 'rumours' that United are eyeing Goretzka. Goretzka has been linked to United at various stages of his career over the years but needless to say, a transfer has never materialised. At the start of Vincent Kompany's reign at Bayern, it seemed Goretzka's time at the club was coming to an end, with limited minutes on the pitch. However, he has since regained the manager's confidence and is now featuring more regularly. He made 40 appearances last term across all competitions. Advertisement On Monday, Falk spoke to the 30-year-old and directly asked him about rumours that United want him. He answered, 'I'm very focused on the tournament [Club World Cup] here and am happy to be at Bayern.' 'I want to help the team next season as well.' Goretzka's comments make it clear he isn't considering a move to Old Trafford. Likewise, there's been little to suggest United are seriously pursuing him, with other midfield targets currently taking priority.
