'None of us can do it alone': BBJ names Coakley top CFO for lifetime achievement
The recipient of this award is no surprise, according to another CFO and a previous honoree. The Business Journal is honoring Tim Coakley, chief financial officer of Blauer Manufacturing Co. Inc., with the 2025 F. Gorham Brigham Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is named after a distinguished Boston business leader, F. Gorham Brigham, its first recipient, who retired in 2005 and died at age 101 in 2016. Coakley, who knew Brigham well, said he's humbled by the comparison. 'For a guy like myself, who knew Gorham as much as I did, this honor means so much,' Coakley said in an interview. 'I've witnessed the person for whom the award is named.' Others agree that the comparison seems apt. Joe DiLorenzo, a former CFO with the Boston Celtics who is a vice president now with Eastern Bank, said that Coakley 'just wants to do the right thing." 'He has the great qualities that Gorham had. Tim is always asking 'how can I help?' I think that's a powerful testament of who he is,' said DiLorenzo, himself a 2016 recipient of the award. 'Tim is simply a good man.' Brigham held financial leadership roles, including as senior vice president of Citizens Bank. He helped found the Treasurers Club of Boston, and served as a volunteer and leader with numerous community organizations such as the Carroll School in Lincoln and the Salvation Army. Coakley said that Brigham "had a way of understanding other people, of taking the time to get to know them and their needs, and that resonates with me deeply.' 'That's one of the things I learned most from him,' Coakley said. Coakley helps lead an 89-year-old, family-owned business, headquartered in Boston's Fenway neighborhood, that makes uniforms and accessories for police, firefighters and other emergency responders. He's worked as the Blauer CFO since 2013, but his contributions to Boston's business community go back even further. Coakley previously served as CFO for Agfa Corp., an international imaging company, as well as its medical division, based in Wilmington. He also held a similar role at Island Oasis, a beverage business in Walpole. A graduate of Boston College, Coakley has been active in the Treasurers Club and the local chapter of Financial Executives International, and has served as president of each. He also serves as the board treasurer of the Fenway Community Development Corp., a nonprofit working to provide affordable housing and preserve the vitality of one of Boston's most diverse neighborhoods. He sees his participation in such groups — and in his company and his profession — as a way of giving back. 'It really comes down to community,' he said. 'How are you going to act as a member of the various communities you're part of? How are you going to be an active contributor? None of us can do it alone.' One of Coakley's new communities is the small group of recipients of the Brigham Lifetime Achievement Award. 'I feel honored to be part of this remarkably accomplished group of people, including the award's namesake,' he said. 'Frankly, I'm just trying to carry on some of the things I've learned and admired in them.'

Quay Celtic the standout performers as Louth's other top-flight sides all lose
QUAY CELTIC 4 Luke Gorham was the hero of this important Premier Division victory for Quay Celtic, scoring a hat-trick in this away engagement against Albion Rovers who finished the game with 10 men. Not only was Gorham involved in all four goals, but he was also central to the turning point in the game as in scoring the opening goal he was involved in the incident which saw Albion's Ryan Levins shown a straight red card. The final scoreline doesn't tell the tale of the game as Albion started off brightly and hit the post. Dylan Quinn intercepted a pass and his curling shot beat keeper Eddie Maguire, only to roll along the goal-line, allowing Maguire to gather the ball. The key moment arrived when a long clearance from the visitors bounced into the path of Gorham who was through on goal. Levins came across to make a tackle, but it was slightly mis-timed and he took out Gorham, leading to a free kick outside the box and a straight red for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. From the resultant free kick Gorham opened the scoring to compound Albion's misery. With the two previous meetings between the teams, both at Clancy Park, having resulted in 7-0 and 5-0 wins for the Dundalk side, another trouncing was possibly on the cards. Albion were looking to keep things tight for the remainder of the first half, but two defensive errors gifted Gorham and Quay two further goals in a four-minute period. On 36 minutes Danann Killeen intercepted a loose pass and put through Gorham to make it 2-0. Then Gorham benefited from another error to complete his hat-trick and send Quay in 3-0 ahead at the break. In the other two fixtures between the teams Albion had registered a total of two, maybe three, shots. But after falling three goals behind on Thursday night they easily had enough chances to snatch a draw or even win. Just before half-time Maguire pulled off a fine point-blank save to deny Jamie Donagh. Maguire then tipped a Dylan Myles header onto the crossbar and Quay scrambled the ball away. ADVERTISEMENT However, full-back Oisin McCumiskey all but wrapped up the points when he notched Quay's fourth goal three minutes into the second half. Assisting for that goal was man-of-the-match Gorham. Mid-way through the half Donagh hit the bottom of the post for Albion and from the rebound James Tester fired a shot just wide. Soon after, Conor McQuillan volleyed a shot towards the bottom corner from around the penalty spot, but miraculously Maguire got down to tip the ball around the post. Then Maguire came off his line to deal with a corner kick and palmed it to Dylan Myles who deftly lobbed over the keeper. However the ball then bounced up and onto the crossbar. While Quay deserved their win, Albion were left wondering when the tide will turn on their fortunes as they sit bottom of the table, four points from safety. Albion: Nathan Dunne Barnett, Ryan Levins, Kevin McCann, Oran Kinch (Jamie Kirwan 46), Dylan Myles, Darren McCann (Ross Kinch 71), James Tester (Dylan Kirwan 58), Ciaran McCann, Jamie Donagh (Conor McQuillan 58), Dylan Quinn, JJ Moore (Cian Towey 72). Quay: Eddie Maguire, Oisin McCumiskey, Blake Stephens (Graham Stephens 60), Nnandi Nnaji, Mark Traynor (Aaron Casey 60), Danann Killeen (Pauric Lee 78), Adam McKenna, Adam Finnegan, Taylor Murphy (Cillian Lavery 67), Luke Gorham (Ronan Cunningham 78), Kevin Teather. GLENMUIR 1 DULEEK 2 A narrow win for Duleek over Glenmuir sees the Tollstone sit atop the Premier Division table. It's a position they haven't really been accustomed to since the ill-fated 2013 season, during which a clerical error cost them the league title. On Thursday night last at Glenmuir Park, it was a Dylan O'Boyle brace that gave Duleek all three points as he took his individual total to 15 goals in all competitions. There's still a long way to go and Duleek certainly won't be talking about league titles, but they are firmly in the mix. However the picture is not so good for the Dundalk outfit who haven't fully recovered from losing their opening four games, including a thrashing at the hands of Duleek. Glenmuir then went on a three-match unbeaten run, with two wins and a draw, but more recently they have picked up one win and a draw in four games and they were left to rue the chances they had in the closing stages to salvage a draw against Duleek. Chris Stewart's side played a very direct style of football, but Duleek's defence held firm in the early exchanges. The visitors came more into the game after that and played patiently as they tried to create chances. With 21 minutes on the clock Sean O'Halloran picked out O'Boyle on the edge of the box. The Glenmuir defenders were guilty of stepping back from the midfielder and he brilliantly curled a shot past Daniel Shields. Glens responded positively, though, and Daire Moore was twice called into action, making two fine saves down to his left. The visitors scored early in the second half as a Mattie Noone corner fell kindly for O'Boyle who poked the ball over the line. Duleek looked fairly comfortable at 2-0, but Edgar Bitainis was causing havoc with his long-range throw-ins and one such delivery in the 65th minute unsettled the Duleek defence and Michael Adegboyega flicked the ball into the path of Greg Shannon who smashed a shot home. Bitainis proved to be a real platform for attack, but Glens couldn't capitalise and Sean Kennedy put in a big performance at the back as soaked up late pressure. Glenmuir, though, should have had a leveller late on when another throw into the box caused yet another mix-up and a shot at the back post skewed wide. Glenmuir: Dan Shields, Tiarnan Rogers, Stefan Wesley, Kyle Murphy, Edgar Bitainis, Conor McMahon, Dan Brogan (Niall O'Connor 85), Michael Adegboyega, Greg Shannon (Joe Byrne 90 +3), Ryan McDonnell, Ciaran Walsh (Victor Ihemeje 57). Duleek: Daire Moore, Sean Kennedy, James Traynor, Craig Moore, Ben Boyce, Jamie McCarthy, Sean O'Halloran, Matthew Noone, Dylan O'Boyle (Tom Reilly 73), Josh O'Reilly (Karl Dyas 86), Bobby Brady. PARKVILLA 9 BELLURGAN UNITED 0 It proved to be a calamitous weekend for Peninsula outfit Bellurgan United. Deposed as leaders of the Premier Division when Duleek edged out Glenmuir the night before, they travelled to play third-in-the-table Parkvilla on Friday night and crashed to a resounding defeat following an utter collapse in the second half. This was in the wake of losing their most experienced and probably most valuable player Ray Finnegan, who received his marching orders just after half-time after picking up a second yellow card. This became a double whammy as Parkvilla immediately increased their advantage to three goals, having opened the scoring after just 10 minutes. After the sending-off the Louth side just fell to pieces as they were hit with an avalanche of goals. Within four minutes Parkvilla nabbed another, and they tacked on two more in the space of three minutes. The shell-shocked visitors managed to hold out for 10 minutes before Parkvilla scored again, and then in another short burst the Meath side scored twice more in the closing 10 minutes. This was a chastening experience for Bellurgan, but for Parkvilla, who have been strong contenders for the title over the last number of years, it marked them as genuine challengers as they trail leaders Duleek by five points but have two games in hand. Bellurgan: Niall Brady, Sean McEvoy, Gavin Gregory, Ray Finnegan, Stephen Finnegan (Emmet Rogan 35), Danny O'Connor, Deane Browne (Luke Higgins 75), Ross Hynes (Connor Dorris 75), Adam Roddy, Tadhg O'Connor, Danny McDonald (Cormac Renaghan 67). TORRO UNITED 0 QUAY CELTIC 3 Quay Celtic set up a mouth-watering Kilmessan Shield semi-final against arch rivals Trim Celtic this Thursday following this win over Division 1 opponents Torro United on Sunday morning. It's a busy period for Quay, having played on the Friday night, but they won't be complaining as their return from the weekend was two victories, having scored seven times while keeping their own goal intact. The only down side was that Danann Killeen collected two yellow cards and was dismissed, which will see him miss the clash with Trim along with Nnandi Nnaji and Mark Traynor. The latter is growing in confidence since his elevation to the team, and the young defender created a personal landmark when scoring his first goal for the side. Traynor popped up at the back post to slot in a cross to put Quay ahead - that after the teams had taken a water break in the extremely warm conditions. The weather conditions resulted in a slow and laboured start by Quay, and after taking the lead they suffered a potentially serious setback, with Killeen seeing red. However, the visitors remained unruffled and Adam Finnegan sent Luke Gorham clear to round the Torro keeper and tap the ball into the net to make it 2-0 a couple of minutes from the interval Quay struck again shortly after the restart, with Adam McKenna grabbing their third goal. Quay: Pauric McConville, Oisin McCumiskey (Sean McArdle 78), Graham Stephens, Nnandi Nnaji, Mark Traynor, Danann Killeen, Adam McKenna, Adam Finnegan, Taylor Murphy (Blake Stephens 64), Luke Gorham (Pauric Lee 71), Kevin Teather (Cillian Lavery 64). ROCK CELTIC 0 CARRICK ROVERS 3 Rock Celtic slumped to a hugely disappointing defeat as expectations of another glorious Kilmessan Shield run were burned off in the heat at Sandy Lane on Friday night. Victors twice in a row and then defeated in the following year's decider, Rock's record in this competition is the best of any side in the competition. Hence hopes were high going into this semi-final, for which they had home advantage. Unfortunately this was a game where the team failed to do themselves justice, with probably only two of their players - Liam McDonnell and Niall Lennon - showing anything like the form that they are capable of. Whether or not it was a case that the occasion was just too big for them, the Seasiders simply never really got going and the champions won comfortably in the end to book their place in the final. Indeed, it took Rock some 77 minutes to even muster a shot in anger at the Carrick Rovers goal, and the tie had progressed into stoppage time when they managed their second attempt at the target. The performance was in such sharp contrast to the home side's recent games and how they played in the quarter-final victory against Parkvilla when they created so many scoring openings. Rock: Oran McEvoy, Francis Lynch (Josh Todd 76), Scott Rogers, Jack McKenna (D Mulligan 50), Liam McDonnell, Ronan Sands, Mark Leavy (Robbie Mackin 75), Paddy O'Connell (Ralph Tinsley 59), Gary Clarke, Niall Lennon, Alex O'Kane (Michael Dobilovics 59). WALSHESTOWN 2 JOHNSTOWN 5 Walshestown's hopes of reaching the Fitzsimons Cup semi-finals were dashed on Sunday as they were convincingly beaten at home to Johnstown. It was the third meeting of the teams this season in league and cup competitions and on all three occasions Johnstown have scored five goals. It's safe to say the Dunleer side will be sick of the sight of the Meath team, but the Rinkinstown outfit still have to travel to the MDL Grounds for an away league tie. There was a poor start from the hosts as they found themselves 2-0 down inside 25 minutes. The Navan team opened the scoring on 11 minutes before doubling their advantage midway through the half. However on the half-hour Evan Sullivan scored a fine solo effort to halve the deficit - the 28-year-old's first goal since the start of June. The visitors re-established their two-goal advantage on the 30-minute mark when Adam Cassidy was beaten by a well struck shot. The result was then effectively put beyond doubt on 43 minutes. Walshestown looked to be finishing the half brightly, but they were caught out just before the short whistle as Johnstown made it 4-1. The second half was more of a procession as chances were few and far between between. Johnstown were gifted a fifth goal with 22 minutes remaining. But just five minutes later second-half Walshestown sub James O'Neill powered a shot home to take some of the bad look off the scoreline. The Dunleer side will have a week's break now as they still have a Challenge Cup fixture to look forward to. They will be away to Premier Division outfit Quay Celtic in the second round with a date to be set. Meanwhile, Walshestown's fellow Division 1 outfit Ardee Celtic were given a walkover against Trim Town as the Meath side couldn't field in their Fitzsimons Cup last-16 game on Sunday. Ardee will now play the winners of Enfield Celtic v BJD Celtic in the quarter-final. Walshestown: Adam Cassidy, Keith Murray (Aidan McCormack 61), Tommy Tuite, Helder Mota, Ronan Geehan, Cathal O'Reilly (Patrik Tomko 46), Zach Levins (James O'Neill 61), John McEneaney (Ciaran Daly 85), Maratine Walsh, Brandon Sullivan, Evan Sullivan (Danann McMahon 61). Meanwhile, Blackbull have moved to within striking distance of the Division 2 pace-setters after Ken Wall's side were handed a 3-0 walkover on Sunday. The Drogheda team were due to host Bailieboro Celtic in Monasterboice, but the Cavan side forfeited the game and the Drogheda men have now picked up maximum points from four of their last five games ahead of a tricky clash at home to Parkvilla 2nds this coming Sunday. Duleek 2nds were also awarded a 3-0 walkover as Kells Celtic were unable to field on Friday. It was the first three points picked up by the Tollstone side in four games, although they have had back-to-back cup wins recently.

These Ontario bakers have (unofficially) taken the biggest Nanaimo bar crown from B.C.
In the kitchen of Northwest Fudge Factory in Levack, Ont., a group of five children spent the better part of a day last month mixing hundreds of kilograms of butter, sugar, chocolate and graham crackers before carefully spreading distinct layers on top of each other. The result was a 544-kilogram Nanaimo bar that they claimed was the largest ever made. The group snatched an unofficial record set just weeks earlier, when culinary arts students at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo created a confection weighing just 45 kilograms less. The fudge factory says they received some biting messages from the dessert's namesake community after announcing the feat. Discover the best of B.C.'s recipes, restaurants and wine. The same group of Ontario kids already holds the current Guinness World Record for the largest Nanaimo bar after they baked a 240-kilogram bar back in 2020. Chantelle Gorham, one of the owners of the fudge factory, says she chose not to go through the process of recording the latest endeavour in the Guinness record books because they want Nanaimo residents to claim it. 'We understand that the Nanaimo bar is near and dear to Nanaimo, B.C., and this is something they should be very proud of,' said Gorham, whose kids were part of the Ontario baking team. The Nanaimo students didn't follow the Guinness verification process either, instead relying on validation through the Baking Association of Canada and the Culinary Association of Canada. After hearing about 'nasty emails' being sent to the Ontario fudge factory, Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said he felt a 'certain disappointment.' 'That kind of negative reaction doesn't reflect the vast majority of the citizens here in Nanaimo,' Krog said. 'But it has provided an encouragement for future competition, which is healthy and good for everybody.' The negativity isn't dulling the excitement in the Greater Sudbury area over the dessert, which was cut into 2,400 half-pound pieces and sold in the community on Canada Day as a fundraiser for three charities supporting youth. Ten-year-old Austin Kurtis and 15-year-old Ella Kurtis, who were part of the baking team, said people came out in droves to buy the squares, leaving no leftovers behind. 'We would sell three pieces to one individual and they'd come back maybe 20 minutes later buying five more,' Ella said. 'People really liked it,' Austin added. 'I think we did a good job.' While the fudge factory doesn't plan to go after the record in the future, Gorham said she might make another megasized bar for a future Canada Day to satisfy the community's 'sweet tooth.' 'Sudbury really loves Nanaimo bars, so you never know,' she said.

Byredo founder Ben Gorham's exit marks a familiar pattern in beauty M&A
Ben Gorham, the founder and creative force behind Swedish fragrance label Byredo, is stepping away from the brand nearly two decades after its inception and three years after selling a majority stake to Spanish conglomerate Puig, reported Cosmetics Business. Founded in 2006, Byredo evolved from a niche fragrance label into a full-fledged lifestyle brand spanning beauty, fashion, and homeware. Known for its minimalist packaging and distinctive scent names, the brand attracted Puig, which acquired a majority stake in 2022 at a reported 1bn euro valuation. Gorham stayed on as Chief Creative Officer under a transitional agreement that ended this June. The move reflects a growing trend: creative founders departing once their brands are absorbed by global players. While Puig has emphasised its commitment to preserving brand DNA, as seen in its stewardship of Charlotte Tilbury and Dries Van Noten, founder exits inevitably shift a brand's creative direction toward commercial scale. Analysts note that Gorham's exit follows a familiar post-acquisition cadence. Conglomerate ownership offers growth infrastructure but can also dilute founder-led vision. As valuations peak, we often see founders stepping aside, signalling the end of the artisanal phase and the beginning of corporate brand building. Puig's Chairman and CEO Marc Puig praised Gorham's role in establishing Byredo's distinctive identity, vowing to uphold the brand's ethos while unlocking further growth. However, as Puig consolidates its portfolio with an eye toward eventual IPO readiness, questions remain about how much of Byredo's avant-garde edge will remain intact.
