Samay Raina cracks jokes outside Supreme Court amid disability remark row: ‘I support Mohak Mangal'

Comedian Samay Raina, known for his sharp humour, found himself at the centre of controversy after his online show India's Got Latent was accused of mocking people with disabilities. What started as a typical episode filled with light-hearted banter quickly escalated into a nationwide backlash, triggering FIRs, court proceedings, and even discussions in Parliament. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Samay's trademark wit was on full display outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, with several of his remarks now going viral across social media. Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar ">Samay, along with fellow comedians Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar (also known as Sonali Aditya Desai), and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar, appeared before the Supreme Court to submit a written apology related to the case. As paparazzi surrounded him outside the court in hopes of getting a statement, Samay smiled and replied, 'Wahin kahenge na, aapko thodhi kahenge' (Whatever I have to say, I'll say in court, not to you). The clip has since been widely shared online, earning praise for his humour even amid legal troubles. In another video, when asked by a ANI reporter if he had anything to say about the allegations, Samay simply responded, 'I support Mohak Mangal.' Mangal had recently accused news agency ANI of blackmail and extortion, alleging that they demanded over ₹ 40 lakh from him after issuing copyright strikes on his videos. According to Mangal, an ANI representative contacted him to settle the matter financially. ANI, however, claims Mangal openly admitted to using their copyrighted material for profit and went on to release a video that the agency has described as 'defamatory' and 'an attempt to discredit' them, reported Bar and Bench. Earlier this year, Samay and influencer Ranveer Allahbadia were booked by police in both Maharashtra and Assam over comments made on India's Got Latent that were deemed offensive. Samay also appeared before the National Commission for Women and submitted a written apology for remarks from the show considered disrespectful to women.

Five social media influencers, including Samay Raina, appear before Supreme Court over remarks ‘ridiculing' disabled

India's Got Latent host Samay Raina and four other social media influencers appeared before the Supreme Court on Tuesday over a case regarding mocking disabled people. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi noted the presence of social media influencers and instructed them to submit their responses to the petition. Additionally, the bench asked them to appear again in person on the next hearing date of the case. Apart from Samay, the SC summoned Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, also known as Sonali Aditya Desai, and Nishant Jagdsish Tanwar. The top court, however, granted Sonali Thakkar permission to appear virtually at the next hearing because of a health issue. The bench stated that social media influencers must file their replies within two weeks, and no further extension will be granted. It also warned that their absence at the next hearing will be taken seriously. The Supreme Court instructed Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre, to draft social media guidelines that balance freedom of speech and expression with the rights and responsibilities of others. It stated that one person's freedom should not infringe on the rights of others and highlighted that the most challenging aspect is the enforceability of these guidelines. On May 5, the Supreme Court instructed five social media influencers to appear before it or face coercive measures, following a plea that accused them of ridiculing individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare disorder, as well as others with disabilities, on their show. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh instructed the Commissioner of Police of Mumbai that Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakar and Nishant Jagdsish Tanwar appear before the top court. The SC's order came after M/s Cure SMA Foundation filed a petition seeking to prevent the broadcast of derogatory and denigrating content on digital media targeting persons with disabilities. The petition also called for the development of guidelines to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in relation to online content broadcasting.

YouTuber Samay Raina appears before NCW months after repeated summons over remarks on 'India's Got Latent'

The NCW had issued Raina a notice following public outrage over remarks by participants and hosts that were perceived to be derogatory towards women. His appearance before the panel follows repeated summonses issued since February. Raina and others did not attend the original hearing on February 17, citing travel and security-related constraints. The NCW later rescheduled the hearing, giving them time to return to India and appear in person. The controversy erupted after clips from India's Got Latent, a comedy-based YouTube talent show, went viral earlier this year, leading to a backlash for allegedly making light of rape and objectifying women. Following this, an FIR was lodged by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell and the NCW took suo motu cognisance of the issue. The YouTube series was taken down in February, and Raina issued a public apology, saying he regretted any unintended harm caused. In the weeks that followed, Raina announced a temporary break and later launched an international comedy tour, a reason he cited for his non-appearance before the commission.

India's Got Latent row: Comedian Samay Raina appears in SC; court asks him, others to file response

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday recorded the appearance of five social media influencers, including India's Got Latent host Samay Raina, in a case alleging they "ridiculed" individuals with disabilities, including those with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), during the comedy show. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked all the influencers to file their responses to the petition within two weeks, cautioning that no further extensions would be granted. The top court also made it clear that their in-person appearance at the next hearing is mandatory and failure to comply would be "viewed seriously". An exception was granted to influencer Sonali Thakkar, also known as Sonali Aditya Desai, who was allowed to appear virtually at the next hearing due to a physical condition. The bench further directed Attorney General R Venkataramani to work on formulating social media guidelines that strike a balance between the right to freedom of speech and expression and the rights and dignity of others. The court underlined that while freedom of expression is fundamental, it cannot come at the cost of violating others' rights. It also noted the challenge of enforcing such guidelines. The case stems from a plea filed earlier this year, alleging that the influencers mocked persons suffering from disabilities, particularly those with SMA, during an episode of their online show. On May 5, the Supreme Court had directed them to appear in person or face coercive action.
