Two charged with murder after deadly wedding shooting in southern France, bride killed and groom wounded
MARSEILLE, June 27 — Two men have been charged with murder as part of a criminal gang after a 27-year-old bride was shot dead at a wedding party in southeastern France, prosecutors said. Gunmen opened fire last Sunday at a wedding celebration in Goult, a hilltop village overlooking lavender fields, in what sources said might have been drug-related score settling. Four masked men shot at several guests, including the newlyweds and the bride's 13-year-old nephew, in a car park outside the village hall, Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said late Thursday. 'The assailants opened fire, fatally wounding the bride, who was hit several times near the carotid artery,' Bessone said. 'The shots also hit the groom, who had several wounds in the upper body,' he said, adding that the boy had a lung injury and was initially in critical condition. The groom's sister was also hit in the shoulder. One of the attackers was killed. He was 'shot in the back and head' and also 'hit by a vehicle during the attack,' said the prosecutor. His three accomplices fled on foot. Two of them were detained in a nearby town several hours later and the fourth is on the run. After 96 hours in police custody, the two suspects appeared before a magistrate on Thursday and charged with murder and attempted murder as part of an organised gang. They have been remanded in custody. The Marseille public prosecutor did not specify their motives. But a source close to the case said the 25-year-old groom was known to police for drug and organised crime offences. A bride has been shot dead by a masked assailant at her wedding in a village in south-east France. One of the attackers also died and three other people, including a 13-year-old child, were injured in the attack, which happened in the village of Goult, Luberon. The identity of the suspects is unknown, but police believe the incident may be drug-related. At about 4.30am on Sunday, the bride, 27, and the 25-year-old groom were leaving the wedding party when they were confronted by four masked assailants who opened fire. Restaurant owner Guillaume Molinas, 50, told AFP he feared that the tragedy would 'give the village a bad name', adding: 'The last major incident in the village was 125 years ago.' The French government has recently vowed to ramp up the fight against drug-related crime. Another shooting took place at about 6am on Sunday in the city of Avignon, in the same Vaucluse region. A man was shot dead in the Cap Sud shopping centre area, while a second person was injured and is in a serious condition.

Bride shot dead at wedding party in French village
A 27-year-old bride was shot to death as she left her wedding celebrations in a small French village in the early hours of Sunday. Authorities have not released the woman's name. Her husband, 25, and a 13-year-old child were also seriously wounded in the attack, which took place at 4.30 a.m. local time (10.30 p.m. ET Saturday), according to a statement from local prosecutor Florence Galtier, published Sunday. The couple were married on Saturday and celebrated with around 100 guests, before getting into a car to leave the venue in Goult, a village to the east of the city of Avignon in southeastern France. 'A vehicle pulled in behind them, blocking their way, with a number of hooded individuals on board,' the statement from the prosecutor said. 'These people then got out of the vehicle and started shooting in the direction of the victims, with what appear to be have been various different kinds of weapons,' it continues. One of the assailants died in the attack, while the rest fled the scene on foot, according to the statement, which adds that another wedding guest was also slightly injured. Prosecutors said autopsies are scheduled to be performed at the beginning of the week, and that they have launched an investigation on charges of murder committed by an organized criminal group and attempted murder as part of an organized criminal group. Local mayor Didier Perello told CNN affiliate BFMTV that the shooting is unprecedented. 'Goult is a quiet village, which has never experienced events of this type. Twenty-four hours later, we are still in shock (…), it is above all anger that drives us today,' he said. BFMTV also reported that a third person died overnight into Sunday in a separate shooting in Avignon, but it is not clear whether the two incidents are connected.

Goult's mayor Didier Perello said he believed the attack was "targeted", adding that he was "angry, revolted, in shock", in comments reported by the newspaper.
