Qatar sets sights on 2036 Olympics Games by creating bid committee

The Qatar Olympic Committee on Wednesday announced the creation of a bid committee for the 2036 Olympics and Paralympic Games, confirming its intention to host the events that would come 14 years after it staged the World Cup. It's the latest attempt by the Middle Eastern country to host the Summer Games, after Doha was overlooked by the International Olympic Committee in favour of Brisbane for the 2032 Olympics. On two other occasions, Doha did not progress to the IOC's list of candidates. The Qatari committee said the country, which was criticized by human rights defenders ahead of the World Cup, 'has firmly established itself as a global hub for major international sporting events ... (and) has successfully hosted numerous world championships across multiple disciplines and invested in world-class infrastructure that reflects the country's long-term commitment to excellence and sustainability in sport.' 'The bid will reflect a unified national vision that builds on Qatar's track record, speaks to the potential of the region and upholds the enduring values of excellence, friendship and respect that define the Olympic and Paralympic movements,' the committee said. The committee didn't address when in 2036 it would propose to host the Games. The World Cup had to be held in November and December because of the extreme heat in the region. The IOC prefers the traditional July-August slot. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, will serve as bid committee chairman. Related Topics 2036 Olympics

Gout Gout at Commonwealth Games 2026: Australia's sprint sensation confirms plans for Glasgow CWG

Australia's teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout is set to to take part in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It was expected for Gout to prioritise the World Junior Athletics Championship in the United States (August 5-9), with the CWG running from July 23 to August 2. But it has been understood that the 17-year-old will plug in a race in Glasgow, ahead of the junior worlds. 'We need to wait for the full Commonwealth Games program to be released, but yes, we are planning that Gout will be available to run at an event in Glasgow before going on to the World Juniors in Eugene,' said Gout's manager James Templeton to Gout's move was welcomed by Australia's Glasgow 2026 chef de mission, Petria Thomas. 'It's very exciting when our best athletes publicly announce their intention to be at the Games. There is of course qualification processes that all of our athletes will need to go through, a lot can happen in the year leading into a Games,' Thomas told ABC Sport. Gout has been touted to be the next big thing in global athletics. He recently broke the Australian senior record in 200m and claimed the under-23 title in the same distance at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Australia given Commonwealth Games boots with Gout Gout intending to compete in Glasgow

Australia's chef de mission for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has expressed her excitement that athletes want to compete next year in Scotland following Gout Gout's announced intention to race. Gout had initially been expected to prioritise the August 5-9 world junior titles in the United States, where he wants to emulate the great Usain Bolt, who won the under-20 200-metre title back in 2002. But Gout is now set to contest the Commonwealth 100m event in Glasgow, before heading to the US for the 200m at the world juniors. Petria Thomas, Australia's Glasgow 2026 chef de mission, told ABC Sport: "It's very exciting when our best athletes publicly announce their intention to be at the Games." "There is of course qualification processes that all of our athletes will need to go through, a lot can happen in the year leading into a Games," Thomas said. "It's really exciting that the athletes are saying they want to compete in the Games and we're looking forward to having our best athletes possible on our team ready to go in a year's time." Gout is in line to do something Bolt never did by running as an individual at the Commonwealth Games. The Jamaican legend was part of his country's gold medal-winning 4x100m men's relay team at Glasgow 2014. Gout's participation will further boost Australia's hopes of again topping the medal tally, which it has done in eight of the last nine Games dating back to 1990. Glasgow's pared-down Games will feature 10 sports, nine less than in 2022 in Birmingham. Sports which Australia has traditionally dominated such as hockey, rugby sevens and diving have been axed from the games. But 82 per cent of the nation's medal events in Birmingham 2022 remain on the Glasgow program. Commonwealth Games Australia boss Craig Phillips told AAP that despite the condensed program, Australia still has ambitions to stay atop the medal tally in Scotland. "We have ambitions to remain top of the medal tally, which is a stated ambition of ours all the time," Phillips said. "We really think that our athletes can do that. What that number takes, it will take. "But we're pretty confident that we'll put our athletes in the best possible position to do that." ABC/AAP

Australia buoyed by Gout's Commonwealth Games signal

Commonwealth Games Australia boss Craig Phillips is thrilled the biggest rising star in Australian sport will be part of the team that is set to yet again top the medal tally in Glasgow. One year out from the 2026 Games - to be staged in Glasgow after Victoria's government reneged on hosting - teenaged sprint sensation Gout Gout's intent to participate has buoyed Australian officials. "Gout Gout's indicated he's coming, which is fantastic to see his interest in coming to the Games," Phillips said on Wednesday. "There's a bit to go obviously in terms of selection processes and all that, but he is an absolutely exciting young talent. "So to see him as part of our Commonwealth Games team alongside great athletes from across our sports is going to be fantastic." Gout had initially been expected to prioritise the August 5-9 world junior titles in the United States, where he wants to emulate the great Usain Bolt, who won the under-20 200m title back in 2002. But Gout is now set to contest the Commonwealth 100m event in Glasgow, before heading to the US for the 200m at the world juniors. "We know the 100 is early enough in the program that he can do both the Commonwealth Games and then the juniors coming in soon thereafter." Phillips said. Gout is in line to do something Bolt never did by running as an individual at the Commonwealth Games. The Jamaican legend was part of his country's gold medal-winning 4x100m men's relay team at Glasgow 2014. Gout's participation will further boost Australia's hopes of again topping the medal tally, which they have done in eight of the last nine Games dating back to 1990. But 82 per cent of the nation's medal events in Birmingham remain on the Glasgow program. "We have ambitions to remain top of the medal tally, which is a stated ambition of ours all the time," Phillips said. "We really think that our athletes can do that.
