81 trees axed for constructing college auditorium in Kalaburagi
As many as 81 trees were felled on the Government First Grade College (autonomous) premises for the construction of a proposed auditorium building in Kalaburagi city on Monday. These trees were located in the two-acre area behind the college building and were razed within a few hours. This comes just 10 days after the Forest Department had launched 'Hasiru Patha-Karnataka' and 'Hasiru Hejje Kalaburagi' programme in Kalaburagi city, with an aim to plant three crore saplings across the State in a year and to plant 28 lakh saplings in Kalyana Karnataka region for increasing the forest and green cover patch. Sachin Avati, assistant manager at RITES Ltd., said that the land has been earmarked for constructing a 1,500-capacity auditorium under the SCP/TSP scheme and under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) at an estimated cost of ₹13.2 crore. Forest officials T.N. Monappa and Ramesh told The Hindu that college authorities have sought permission for cutting the trees for the auditorium. Initially, the department had suggested to the college authorities to identify alternative land for the project. 'Of the 81 trees marked, we are trying to relocate those that have been there for two to three years, while the bigger trees older than 10 years have to be axed as they require specialised equipment for relocation,' Mr. Monappa said. Principal Savita Tiwari said that the removal of trees was an unavoidable aspect for the construction of the auditorium. However, expressing dissatisfaction with the decision of cutting down trees on such a large area, Dr. Tiwari said that a mini garden has been established in the college and more trees will be planted in the coming days.

Investigators seized a total of 39 kg of gold bars and jewellery stolen from the bank. They also recovered ₹1.16 crore cash deposited in Majestic Pride Casino in Goa, that was obtained after melting gold and selling it. Vijayakumar Mohanrao Miriyala (41), former manager of the Managuli Canara Bank branch, now posted in another branch; Chandrashekar Kotilingam Nerella (38), and Sunil Narasimhalu Moka (40). Police had seized 10.5 kg of gold ornaments and melted gold bars worth an estimated ₹10.75 crore from them. Meticulous planning SP Laxman Nimbargi said that the accused had planned the heist meticulously after watching films and web series. 'They had watched several hours of videos on Youtube about breaking locks, disabling CCTV cameras and melting gold. They were also influenced by depictions of how gangs escaped after committing theft in films and series. That is why they used a railway truck to lift two-wheelers so that their tracks were covered,' the SP said. The prime accused had picked his team carefully, including those expert in CCTV maintenance, high-mast lamp repair, locksmiths, and electronics. They had also left ragdolls and vermilion to divert the attention of the police and make it look like a gang from Tamil Nadu or Mangaluru had committed the theft, Mr. Nimbargi said. Mr. Rathod said Mr. Marihal was retiring at the end of July and that the successful resolution of the investigation was Mr. Marihal's retirement gift to Vijayapura district. Heist engineered by former manager Canara Bank officials had complained that a gang of unidentified thieves had broken in to a branch at Managuli on the evening of May 23, 2025 by cutting the bars and bending the grills of the safe locker. They had stolen 58.9 kg of gold and ₹5.2 lakh in cash. They had also taken away Digital Video Recorder from the CCTVs, the complaint said. The bank, however, changed their complaint later to say around 40 kg of gold was recovered. Investigation revealed that the bank manager had engineered the entire episode. The gang had used duplicate keys to enter the bank, but had cut the bars only to derail the investigation. 'They waited for the manager to get transferred, and changed the date of the offence after RCB lost an IPL match. They chose the next date, after relying on weather forecasts by a mobile app that said it would rain in Managuli that evening. But it did not rain,' a police officer said.

22 die due to heart-attack-related problems in 40 days in Karnataka's Hassan, panel to probe cause formed
Heart-attack related deaths have become a big source of worry in Karnataka's Hassan district, with the number of deaths surging to 22 in just 40 days. Five of the 22 dead were between 19 and 25 years old, while as many as eight were aged between 25 and 45. (Representational) The age category of the majority of the victims has raised concerns even more, with most deaths occurring in young or middle-aged people. The surge has pointed the authorities to an emerging health crisis in the region. Five of the 22 dead were between 19 and 25 years old, while as many as eight were aged between 25 and 45. Only a few of the people who have been reported dead due to heart-attack-related issues were aged above 60. The cardiac problems disproportionately emerging in the younger population in the region have rattled both the medical community and the general public. According to a report by the news agency ANI, four deaths were reported just on June 30. The victims on that day have been identified as Lepakshi, a 50-year-old homemaker from JP Nagar in Belur; Professor Muttayya, a 58-year-old English lecturer at the Government First Grade College in Holenarasipura; Kumar, a 57-year-old D-Group employee from Channarayapatna; and Satyanarayana Rao, a 63-year-old resident of Rangolihalli colony. While Lepakshi collapsed after complaining of fatigue, Muttayya died of a sudden heart attack while having tea. Kumar passed away after being hospitalised with chest pain the previous day, and Rao succumbed after a sudden collapse. What do the authorities say about the sudden rise of heart-attack-related deaths in Hassan? Hassan deputy commissioner KS Lathakumari has formed a committee of six members, including the district health officer, the director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, and cardiologists. The committee has been given a week to submit the report. The decision to form the panel was taken on June 30 at a meeting chaired by Lathakumari with the officials of the department of health and family welfare and the department of medical education. According to the director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Rajanna B, while the deaths are suspected to be cardiac-related, no definitive diagnosis has been made, except for two cases in the hospital. "Most deaths occurred at home or while doing routine chores, only 2 of them occurred in the institution... None of these have undergone any postmortem, so it is difficult to tell the reason for death, because only 40% of the chest pain cases occur due to sudden cardiac arrest. A committee was formed yesterday after a meeting with deputy commissioner Lathakumari. We will do a survey on all these deaths and take technical data," Rajanna was quoted as saying by ANI.
