Minor girl dies two days after wedding in Erode; man arrested

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Sathyamangalam taluk on Sunday (July 20, 2025) on charges of marrying a minor girl, who died two days after the wedding. The police said the accused Sakthivel, a daily-wage labourer from Thandampalayam village in Bhavanisagar, had allegedly lured the 17-year-old girl, a school dropout, and sexually assaulted her. He reportedly married her on July 15 and brought her to his residence. On the following day, the girl developed abdominal pain and was taken to the Government Hospital in Sathyamangalam. As her condition worsened, she was referred to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, where she died on July 17. Acting on a complaint filed by the girl's mother, the Punjai Puliyampatti police registered a case and conducted an inquiry. Initial investigations revealed that the girl had been given medication purchased from a local pharmacy to relieve her symptoms. The police booked Sakthivel under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. He was produced before a magistrate in Sathyamangalam and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigations are under way to determine the exact cause of the girl's death.

Govt. hospital in Alangudi gets NQAS, Kayakalp certification

The Government Hospital in Alangudi, Pudukkottai District, has been awarded the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) and Kayakalp certification for the year 2025-26. According to an official press release, as part of the NQAS assessment, a team of officials from Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Visakhapatnam inspected the hospital, and enquired about professional knowledge, service, cleanliness, and the performance of its 13 departments. NQAS was instituted by the National Health and Family Welfare Department in 2013 to promote quality healthcare services in government hospitals and primary health centres. The standards are vetted by the National Society for Quality in External Health Care Quality Association. Kayakalp, a national initiative by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, aimed at promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control in public healthcare facilities, has been rolled out in secondary and primary care facilities in Tamil Nadu through the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services and the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, respectively. M. Periyasamy, chief medical officer, said that these programmes had resulted in fewer hospital-acquired infections, early recovery, and discharge of patients in healthy conditions, indirectly improving the doctor-patient relationship.

CBI registers case in custodial death of temple guard in TN's Sivaganga

Chennai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against police personnel of Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu in connection with the "custodial" death of a private security guard employed at the Madapuram Temple in Thiruppuvanam. The CBI has taken over the case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with offences relating to custodial violence and deaths. On June 28, Ajith Kumar was picked up by a special police team in connection with an informal complaint about a jewel theft near the Badrakali Amman Temple. Despite there being no formal arrest or warrant, he was taken into custody and allegedly subjected to brutal torture during an unofficial interrogation. The following day, Ajith was brought to the Government Hospital in Madurai with multiple injuries and was declared dead on June 29. The autopsy revealed signs of severe physical assault, consistent with custodial torture. The incident triggered widespread protests across Tamil Nadu with civil society groups, human rights organisations, and political parties demanding immediate justice and accountability. The victim's family accused the police of attempting to cover up the incident by portraying the death as natural and alleged that there were efforts to cremate the body hastily without conducting a proper post-mortem examination. Public outrage and intervention by rights groups forced a second post-mortem examination under judicial supervision. The Madras High Court's Madurai Bench took serious note of the case and expressed concern over the repeated instances of custodial violence in the state. A CBI team from the Special Crime Branch in Delhi has begun preliminary investigations, including gathering evidence, reviewing medical reports, and identifying the officers involved. The agency is expected to pursue charges against multiple police officials and bring greater scrutiny to custodial practices in Tamil Nadu.
