(Shutterstock) The victims, identified as Rahul Kumar, Tuntun and Munna, all migrant workers from Bihar, sustained injuries and were rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16. According to the statement of complainant Rahul Kumar, 25, who works at the market, the incident occurred around 9 pm on July 24 near Booth Number 12. Rahul, along with his friends Tuntun and Munna, was discussing the disappearance of Tuntun's mobile phone. They suspected that another worker, also named Rahul, who resides in the same market area, might have stolen it. While they were talking, Rahul (accused) and his associate Veerpal arrived at the spot. When confronted about the suspicion, Rahul lost his temper, began hurling abuses and shouted at Veerpal to 'teach them a lesson', the complainant alleged. As the victims tried to leave the area to avoid any confrontation, Rahul and Veerpal allegedly blocked their way. Veerpal reportedly grabbed complainant Rahul by both hands, while accused Rahul pulled out a knife from his right hand and attacked him on the back. When Tuntun and Munna tried to intervene and escape, Rahul allegedly stabbed Tuntun on his left waist and slashed Munna on his nose, injuring all three victims. The assailants fled the scene immediately, taking the weapon with them. Soon after, a police patrol reached the spot and rushed the injured victims to GMSH, Sector 16, for treatment. A case under Sections 118 (1), 126(2) and 3(5) of BNS and Sections 25- 54-59 of the Arms Act was registered at the Sector 26 police station. Since the attack, police have arrested Rahul, who has been sent to judicial custody.

Efforts on to reopen GMSH-16 drug de-addiction centre closed for 5 years

The Chandigarh administration has once again initiated efforts to reopen the drug de-addiction centre at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, which has remained closed for the last five years. The health department has been asked to make arrangements, but due to a shortage of psychiatrists, the centre is yet to become operational. According to Dr Suman Singh, Director of Health Services, a proposal has already been sent to the administration for the recruitment of two psychiatrists. She mentioned that the department currently has only two psychiatrists who are already overloaded with patient cases, making it impossible to run the de-addiction centre with the existing staff. Therefore, additional dedicated staff is essential. This de-addiction centre at GMSH was first opened around 10 years ago but had to be shut during the Covid-19 pandemic when the facility was converted into a Covid care centre. Since then, the lack of psychiatrists and other staff has prevented its reopening. The facility is equipped with 10 beds, but to operate efficiently, it requires 24×7 staff, including psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. As only two psychiatrists are available for all psychiatric and addiction cases, managing the high patient load from the entire region is a challenge. Drug and alcohol abuse remain a major issue in this region, contributing to the rising number of addiction patients. Despite the rising numbers, PGI remains the only public institution offering full-scale addiction treatment, while GMCH-32 and GMSH-16 offer basic psychiatric services. In 2023, PGI's Drug De-addiction and Treatment Centre recorded 36,683 OPD visits, 12,570 from Chandigarh and 24,112 from neighbouring states. Approximately 246 patients were admitted for inpatient treatment, with a significant number from Punjab. In Punjab, the highest use is of opioids, with synthetic drugs now also being used more frequently. Subodh B N, Additional Professor, Department of Psychiatry, PGI, says that a decade ago, 80 per cent of cases were of alcohol dependency. Still, now the percentage is 50, as the use of opioids and cannabis has increased, with PGI offering patients Opioid Substitution Therapy. Doctors stress that without dedicated staff and proper infrastructure, the situation will continue to push patients toward unregulated private de-addiction centres, especially in Punjab. Reopening GMSH's de-addiction centre remains a critical need, but hiring qualified professionals continues to be a major hurdle.

TNEB cuts annual losses to Rs 800 crore, reports Rs 70,000 crore revenue

VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has significantly reduced its annual losses to Rs 800 crore, down from previous years, says Managing Director J Radhakrishnan announced on Thursday. The board reported a revenue of Rs 70,000 crore this fiscal, aided by a Rs 17,000 crore subsidy from the state government and an additional Rs 17,000 crore allocated to offset losses. "Prudent financial management and government support have helped curtail losses," Radhakrishnan said during an inspection of the upcoming Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Vellore, slated for inauguration by Chief Minister MK Stalin on June 25. He also confirmed that power connections and transformer setups for the Rs 150-crore hospital will be operational by inauguration day, with backup generator facilities in place. Additionally, a 230-kilowatt substation at Adukkamparai Government Hospital will be functional within three months. To prevent monsoon-related outages, TNEB plans to install three new substations in Vellore region, which currently requires 1,257 MW. Tamil Nadu's total power capacity stands at 14,800 MW, with the 1,320 MW Udangudi plant set for launch soon. The state leads nationally in wind and hydro power generation, with over 20,000 renewable energy sources, he added. TNEB has sought approval to install smart metres for 1.42 crore consumers, aligning with national initiatives. Radhakrishnan assured no tariff hikes for domestic users, citing CM Stalin's directive. The board will also address staff shortages through government-approved recruitment. "Agricultural and industrial growth owes much to uninterrupted power supply, propelling TN to India's second-largest industrial hub," he added. With pending projects now funded, TNEB aims to expedite pending works. Collector VR Subbulakshmi and senior officials accompanied the MD during the review.
