Ludhiana: Man held for drugging, raping teen neighbour
The Jamalpur police arrested a 38-year-old man for drugging and raping a 15-year-old neighbour after offering her lift in his car in Mundian Kalan. After sexually assaulting the girl the accused fled from the village, dropping her in a vacant plot near Government School in Mundian. When she did not return till evening she started looking for her. After sometime the girl was found unconscious in a vacant plot near Government School. When enquired, the girl stated that the accused offered her lift to her school in his Toyota Innova vehicle, which she accepted. The victim added that the accused offered her cold drink laced with the sedatives. After she lost her conscious the accused took her to an isolated place and raped her. Later, he fled, dropping her near the Government School. Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP, city 4) Mandeep Singh stated that soon after receiving a complaint the Jamalpur Police lodged an FIR against the accused under section 64 (Rape) of BNS and section 6 of protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) act. The police arrested the accused.

Ludhiana district logs third Covid death, SOPs missing during bypoll
While the district on Thursday recorded third death due to COVID-19, the seriousness of the situation appeared to be lost on the officials at polling stations as the arrangement for masks were sparse with no enforcement. An 82-year-old, who had tested positive for Covid on Tuesday succumbed to the infection. According to health officials, the man was admitted to the hospital for a heart attack and suffered from a serious lung ailment and was found positive only later upon testing. A doctor confirmed that he was being treated for heart attack only. District election officer-cum-deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain had on Tuesday announced that comprehensive arrangements for masks, sanitisers, and other essential supplies will be ensured at all 194 polling stations for the Ludhiana West bypoll. 'We haven't received any such instruction from the higher ups to ensure that everyone is masked up. We do have masks, but those are kept inside. We aren't using them,' said the booth-level officer (BLO) Haresh Kumar at the booth at the Government School in PAU campus. Bottles of sanitisers were kept on the tables with the EVMs and the staff said they all had masks, but none of them were wearing any. The BLOs at the model booth at BVM School in Kitchlu Nagar also denied getting any instruction to ensure masks or other SOPs for COVID-19. BLOs at the Government Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Khurd, said that while they sanitisers they didn't get any masks. Returning officer Rupinder Pal Singh, when approached, didn't respond to calls. The district has seen an uptick in COVID-19 cases since Monday. Of the 61 cases reported so far since last month, 24 have been reported only since Monday. The district health department, after the cases saw an uptick on Monday, issued an advisory calling for people to ensure they wear masks in crowded places. One positive case, a 51-year-old man, was confirmed in the district on Thursday also. He is hospitalised but reported to be stable. Of the total 61 cases reported so far, only 30 are positive at present. Of these, only four are hospitalised, while 26 are in home isolation and 28 have recovered so far. As many as two people, one 40-year-old man and another 69-year-old woman, both suffering from comorbid conditions, had died of the infection late May. Most of the people reported so far, however, have been vaccinated for the disease.

Minister launches enhanced midday meals scheme
Singarayakonda: Social welfare minister Dr Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy announced that the coalition government is giving top priority to education while launching the midday meal scheme with fine quality fortified rice at the Government School in Mulaguntapadu of Singarayakonda mandal on Thursday. Speaking at the programme, Dr Swamy emphasised the coalition government's commitment to providing quality education along with nutritious food to underprivileged students. He criticised the previous government for making false promises about providing fine rice meals, stating they had dashed the hopes of the poor. He praised Education Minister Nara Lokesh for introducing new reforms in the education system that have improved pass percentages in government schools. He highlighted that they started to distribute textbooks before the start of the academic year and that government schools now offer facilities comparable to private institutions. He said that the coalition government has extended the midday meal scheme beyond primary and high schools to include junior colleges as well. Dr Swamy announced that the Thalliki Vandanam scheme has been implemented as promised. He said that under the Shining Stars Awards programme, the government is encouraging talented students by providing prize money of Rs 20,000 to outstanding performers, aimed at fostering determination and achievement among students. At the programme held in Ongole, the district joint collector Ronanki Gopala Krishna, mayor Gangada Sujatha, and other officials launched the enhanced midday meals programme at the DRRM High School. They also participated in the distribution of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna Vidyarthi Mitra kits to the students.

Mohali Meritorious School excels in PSEB Class 12 results, 11 students on merit list
The Government Meritorious School, Sector 70, Mohali, has achieved a milestone in the Class 12 results declared Wednesday by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB). A total of 11 students from the school have secured places on the state merit list, marking a record performance for the district. Remarkably, no other government or private school in Mohali finds a slot on the merit list. Topping the district chart is Mehak Sharma, a Non-Medical stream student from Takhatgarh village in Ropar district, who scored 497 out of 500, earning third rank across Punjab. She secured 99 marks each in Punjabi, English, and Chemistry, and a perfect 100 in Physics and Mathematics. Mehak's father, a postman at Bharatgarh Post Office, expressed pride in her achievement. 'Our daughter has brought glory to the entire village of Takhatgarh. Her brother is in the Indian Navy, and Mehak dreams of joining the NDA,' he told The Indian Express. Joining her on the merit list is Bhavana, a Non-Medical student from Tibba Nangal village, Ropar. Her father, Har Vilas, an LIC agent, said she had shown exceptional performance, especially in Physics. Mahakpreet Kaur from Bhaini Sahib village in Ludhiana also made an impact with 100 marks in Maths and English, and 99 in Punjabi. Her father, a professional photographer, said: 'She is the eldest daughter in the family, and we believe she will make the country proud.' Principal applauds team effort Principal Ritu Sharma credited the success to collective dedication. 'Having 11 students on the state merit list reflects the hard work of our staff, students, and the unwavering support from parents. They trusted our academic guidance completely.' She also highlighted that 28 students from the school had qualified for JEE Mains last year, proving the institution's academic excellence. BISP beneficiaries protest over illegal cuts

Photo: express Women staged a protest in a government school situated in New Karachi, over alleged deductions from payments being distributed under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). They accused the staff of bribery and harassment. On receiving reports of the protest, officers from Bilal Colony police and other officials reached the scene. According to a statement, issued by SSP Central Zeeshan Shafiq Siddiqui, authorities received information about alleged deductions from BISP payments at the New Karachi Government School. The affected women staged a protest inside the school, accusing the staff of taking bribes and harassing them. It was alleged that the staff was deducting amounts ranging from Rs2,000 to over Rs3,000 from different individuals. Besides the deductions, women also alleged, they were being harassed inside the school premises. SSP Central stated that police are currently gathering more information and conducting further investigation into the allegations made by the women. DSP New Karachi was present at the site along with police personnel, while district administration officials were also present at the school. When contacted, SHO Bilal Colony Nasir Khan confirmed that the police recorded statements of the affected women regarding the allegations of deductions at the government school located in New Karachi's Sector 5-E. Senior officers have been informed, and further legal action will be taken based on their directives. Video statements of women, who had gone to collect their BISP payments, have also gone viral on social media. In the videos, women allege that they were harassed, money was allegedly deducted, bribes were demanded, and they were called into separate rooms, among other accusations. Some women also stated that they had been visiting the centre for several days to collect their payments but were still not paid.
