Fans Theorize Chappell Roan Is Filming 'The Subway' Music Video

Could Chappell Roan's unreleased track, 'The Subway,' finally be on its way to an official drop? Fans certainly think so after the Grammy winner was spotted filming a mystery music video in New York City on July 7. According to fan-captured footage posted on social media, Chappell is serving big Rapunzel vibes with an extremely long version of her signature red locks as they hang down the side of a fire escape. And, in true Chappell fashion, she's seen wearing a bra and mini skirt made out of hair to match. While the audio of the original clip is covered up with her song 'Pink Pony Club,' lip readers think she might be singing a line from the new track: 'It's never over / 'Til I don't look for you on the staircase.' Members of the Pink Pony Club also pointed out that she's perched upon a fire escape with stairs trickling down the streets of New York, which could allude to those very lyrics. 'YOU HEARD THE SONG? IT WAS THE SUBWAY? 😭' one fan wrote on TikTok, in an attempt to confirm the news. The original poster simply responded with, 'Yes,' and added that she was filming right outside of Little Italy in Manhattan. She first debuted the song during her historic set at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York in June 2024. Of course, she was decked out in drag inspired by the Statue of Liberty and wore a taxi-themed outfit in the spirit of the city. The song has quickly become a fan favorite despite not being officially released, as she has performed it during festivals like Lollapalooza and Primavera Sound. As for why we haven't gotten a studio recording of 'The Subway,' Chappell opened up about the process during an interview on Bowen Yang and Matt Rodgers' Las Culturistas in April. According to the artist, she struggled with laying down the track in a way that felt right. 'I've been banging my head against the wall with 'The Subway' can work live, certain things can work live, and they do not work in the studio,' she admitted. Based on these clips, we can only hope that she nailed the song. @ Chappell, we're ready to pre-save to our playlists!

Olivia Rodrigo Owned the Governors Ball Stage With Her First U.S. Headlining Set

In case you were curious, Olivia Rodrigo casually made a major milestone in her career at New York's very own Governors Ball Music Festival this weekend. While O-Rod has graced the stage for crowds at Glastonbury in the U.K. and Lollapalooza in South America, her main stage gig at Gov Ball marked her very first headlining performance at a U.S. festival. (And, before you clock me, she did play Austin City Limits in 2021, but it wasn't a headlining performance. Moving on!) You don't need me to give you a TL;DR on Olivia—she's one of the biggest Grammy-winning singer-songwriters who blew up with a heart-wrenching account of getting her driver's license. Since her Disney exit and mainstream debut, Olivia's snarky and honest songwriting prowess has transcended generations. She's made fans of everyone from Avril Lavigne to Billie Eilish, and she's one of the only Gen Z girlies who can bring in a massive crowd of angsty teens who grew up in the social media age, 26-year-old teenagers on the edge of another crash out, and millennials who desperately crave the good 'ol days of pop punk. Even with thunderstorm warnings and weather delays that pushed her set back by an hour, the proof was in the pudding at Flushing Meadows Corona Park during her headlining set at Gov Ball on Saturday, June 7. This marked my first time seeing the star live, and it definitely exceeded any and all expectations I once had. When it comes to attending Olivia's shows, I've had 'almost' situations too many times, and to be fair, tickets for both her SOUR and GUTS tours sold out instantly. So, I was just happy to be one of the thousands there to catch her Gov Ball gig. She kicked things off with her deep cut-turned-fan favorite 'Obsessed,' and without hesitation, everyone in my section—especially my Cosmo girls—screamed all the words back at her. Once she flew through her guitar solo and too hot to handle camera angles, she declared it was 'time to party'...and proceeded to play two of the most heartwrenching tracks of her career, 'Drivers License' and 'Traitor.' Of course, a standout moment was when she casually brought out The Talking Heads' David Byrne, another musical legend who has influenced artists from Lorde to Miley Cyrus, as a special guest. The duo performed the band's 1983 hit, 'Burning Down the House,' as they skipped around the stage and playfully danced with one another in matching red outfits. It was a moment of one iconic rockstar passing the baton to another, and, above all else, it reminded me that Olivia's music taste is truly top-tier. If the Grammy winner has mastered anything aside from her songwriting chops and live vocals, it's commanding a crowd. We were all wrapped around her finger for the 1.5-hour set. Whether she's belting to 'Favorite Crime' or letting loose on 'Get Him Back!' she doesn't miss a beat. She's in the moment, feeling every emotion, and radiating off the crowd's reactions—and trust me, we felt it, too. Shedding tears during her ballads and releasing all our grievances by screaming at the top of our lungs to 'All-American Bitch' almost felt like a form of therapy. Most child stars embark on a tumultuous journey out of their innocent images so they can burst through the box they're inevitably placed in. As a woman, it's a more layered experience because once they break out of that box, they're placed into another. Olivia crossed over at 17 and made a name for herself with the intimate intricacies of her lyrics, but she got ahead of becoming known only as that 'little Mexican girl that be crying.' (For the record, she's actually Filipino-American.) It's a rarity that someone's debut single becomes an instant classic, and 'Drivers License' did just that. In a couple of decades, SOUR will be seen in a similar vein as Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill and Carole King's Tapestry, if not already. Our kids and grandkids will know Olivia Rodrigo's name and associate her with the highs and lows of their own stories as they put her records on. Her ability to embrace messiness and channel her angst into tracks like 'Jealousy Jealousy' and 'Love Is Embarassing' harnesses the human experience by scratching a certain itch in our minds—particularly that of young women trying to find their place in the world. Undoubtedly, she's found hers with nearly 46 million monthly listeners on Spotify and Billboard chart toppers that solidified her as a Main Pop Girl—but the crowd at Gov Ball proved that she's a bona fide rock star.

Olivia Rodrigo brings out David Byrne for live 'Burning Down the House' duet at Governors Ball

Olivia Rodrigo surprised audiences at the Governors Ball Music Festival on Saturday night with a special guest appearance by David Byrne. The former Talking Heads frontman joined Rodrigo on stage to perform a live rendition of the band's 1983 hit 'Burning Down the House.' Rodrigo and Byrne, both dressed in red, brought a dynamic presence to the stage. Rodrigo wore a red bra and shorts, while Byrne sported a white T-shirt with red overalls. They energetically danced and ran around, alternating lines of the track to the crowd's excitement. Rodrigo also performed other hit songs in her set, including "Obsessed", "Bad Idea, right?", and "So American". 'Burning Down the House' originally peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains the highest-charting single for Talking Heads. The song also received a Grammy nomination at the 26th annual awards. Earlier in the week, Talking Heads released a new music video for 'Psycho Killer,' featuring Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan, building on the band's legacy with fresh interpretations.

Pusha T Says Def Jam Tried to Censor Kendrick Lamar Verse On Upcoming Clipse Album Due To Drake Beef

After much anticipation, Pusha T and No Malice — collectively known as Clipse — finally announced that Let God Sort 'Em Out, their first album in 15 years, will arrive on July 11th. But when the press release was sent out last week, there was curiously no mention of Def Jam, who the duo had signed with last year for the project. Instead, distribution and marketing were attributed to JAY-Z's Roc Nation — and now Pusha T is opening up about why. In a new interview with GQ, the rapper claimed their relationship with Def Jam crumbled over Kendrick Lamar's verse on the song 'Chains & Whips.' Universal Music Group, the parent company of Def Jam, is also home to Drake (OVO Sound/Republic Records) and Lamar (pgLang/Interscope Records). Given last's summer highly publicized beef between Drake and Lamar — which resulted in Drake's filing a lawsuit against UMG — Pusha T said the label was hesitant on the idea of two of Drake's biggest enemies putting out a song together. 'They wanted me to ask Kendrick to censor his verse, which of course I was never doing,' he said. 'And then they wanted me to take the record off. And so, after a month of not doing it, Steve Gawley, the lawyer over there was like, 'We'll just drop the Clipse.' But that can't work because I'm still there [solo]. But [if] you let us all go… ' For those unaware, Pusha T outed Drake for having a 'secret' son in 2018 during their own contentious battle on the incendiary track 'The Story of Adidon,' while Lamar buried Drake with the proverbial nail in the coffin, 'Not Like Us,' last May. Def Jam ultimately decided to release Clipse and drop Pusha as a solo artist, Pusha said, allowing Clipse to search for another label home. A rep for Def Jam and UMG didn't immediately reply to request for comment. The move forced Clipse to push back the album's release date, which was originally supposed to be sometime in 2024. Still, Pusha T conceded the entire process was worth it: 'It felt good to even see how other labels were buying for the project.' In January, Drake filed an 81-page federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleging UMG 'approved, published and launched a campaign to create a viral hit out of a rap track that falsely accuses Drake of being a pedophile and calls for violent retribution against him.' The situation was only exacerbated by Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show performance of the song the following month, which drew in a record number of viewers. At one point during the performance, Lamar looked directly at the camera when he got to the lyrics, 'Say Drake, I hear you like 'em young…' a moment that will forever live in pop culture history. To add insult to injury, Lamar also swept the 2025 Grammy Awards' rap categories, with 'Not Like Us' taking home the trophies for best rap performance, best rap song, best music video, record and song of the year. UMG strongly denies all of Drake's allegations, calling the lawsuit 'frivolous,' 'reckless' and 'misguided.' The label argues that the lyrics in question are 'non-actionable opinion and rhetorical hyperbole' typical of rap battles—not statements of fact— and that taking them as literal defamation threatens free speech and artistic expression. UMG has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, asserting that Drake's claims are an attempt to simply salvage his image after sorely losing the public feud with Lamar. Drake's lawsuit remains active as of now Discovery is underway, and both sides are preparing to present evidence. UMG continues to seek dismissal, while Drake's legal team is focused on proving that UMG's actions went beyond standard music promotion and crossed into deliberate character assassination with real-world consequences. Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' Passes 1 Billion Spotify Streams

Rick Astley's 1987 hit song 'Never Gonna Give You Up' has passed 1 billion streams on Spotify — 38 years after the song debuted. The feat is even more noteworthy given that the song was released more than 20 years before Spotify launched. 'Thanks to streaming platforms, a whole new generation has been able to discover music like mine. Reaching 1 billion streams is something I never dreamed of and to everyone who's ever listened, thank you.' The song became a hit upon its initial release, reaching No. 1 on more than 20 international charts, including spending five weeks at the top of the charts in the U.K. and two weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. However, the tune reached a new generation in later years thanks to the Rickrolling phenomenon, which went viral circa 2007. A brief explainer, if you have somehow managed to avoid this until now: Rickrolling is a joke played online on unsuspecting folks who click on a hyperlink about anything unrelated to Astley only to be taken to the music video for the song. 'Never Gonna Give You Up' was certified platinum in the U.K. in 2020 and went double platinum three years later; it was certified five times platinum in the U.S. Meanwhile, the video has been watched 1.6 billion times on YouTube. Astley had a string of other hits in the late '80s, including 'Together Forever,' 'It Would Take a Strong Strong Man' and 'She Wants to Dance With Me.' He retired from the music business in 1993 to spend time with family but mounted a comeback in 2016 with the album 50, which hit No. 1 in the U.K. He performed at the Glastonbury Festival in 2023 as well as other venues around the world. In 2024, he released a memoir, Never: The Autobiography. Watch the music video for 'Never Gonna Give You Up' below.
