Allianz and p-hailing platforms unite for rider safety

ONE of Malaysia's leading protection solutions company – Allianz Malaysia Berhad (Allianz Malaysia), has partnered with the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and leading p-hailing platforms – foodpanda Malaysia, Lalamove Malaysia and Grab Malaysia – to emphasise the importance of rider safety in Malaysia's rapidly expanding industry. The initiative underscores the shared responsibility of all stakeholders, including government agencies, corporations, p-hailing riders and the public, to protect and support the well-being of these gig workers. Industry stakeholders convened at the recent Allianz Malaysia Media Forum 2025, to explore collaborative strategies for a safer delivery ecosystem. The forum featured a panel discussion with representatives from the p-hailing platforms, exchanging valuable insights on the current challenges in the p-hailing sector and discussing collective efforts to enhance rider safety. The forum also highlighted the crucial role of p-hailing riders in society, who serve as the backbone of the country's growing delivery economy, ensuring seamless access to everyday needs while helping small businesses expand their reach. Many riders are the sole breadwinners for their families, bravely facing daily road risks to support their loved ones. MIROS Human Factors and Road User Behavioural Centre director Azhar Hamzah revealed that nearly 70% of road fatalities involve motorcyclists, with over 4,000 deaths in 2023/24 – equating to 12 deaths daily. For every fatality, there may be around 50 injuries, many leading to permanent disabilities, imposing a substantial economic and social burden on families. Hamzah emphasised that the mission of MIROS is to ensure safe roads for all. 'Through our research, we aim to uncover the risks and challenges faced by road users and identify potential solutions to enhance rider safety and support their families' livelihoods. 'Together, we can transform insights into impactful actions.' Riders face adverse conditions such as rain, haze and prolonged heat exposure. The inherent instability of two-wheeled motorcycles, combined with the lack of physical protection, makes riders' extremities – fingers, elbows, knees, and head – highly vulnerable. Additionally, the practice of 'lane filtering' and sharing roads with larger vehicles often puts riders in precarious positions, frequently in other drivers' blind spots. Recognising their contribution, p-hailing platforms have implemented various safety initiatives. These include onboarding programmes for defensive driving, insurance coverage even when not on duty, in-app safety features with 24/7 support and telematics systems to monitor rider behaviour and map accident hotspots. Allianz Malaysia chief executive officer Sean Wang said, 'We believe that rider safety is a shared duty. 'We are committed to providing insurance solutions and actively contributing to community well-being. 'Our efforts extend beyond profit as we strive to support initiatives that enhance safety for all road users,' he added. Aligned with its commitment, Allianz Malaysia plans to organise two training programmes in a strategic partnership with the Road Safety Marshal Club to improve rider safety. The first programme will focus on rider safety training and road emergency survival, complementing the existing efforts of p-hailing companies, equipping riders with essential skills to navigate roads safely. The second programme will target students from public and private universities, fostering a culture of safety awareness among the younger generation. Wang further commented, 'This collaboration is a testament to our dedication to safeguarding road users and improving road safety knowledge. 'By empowering riders and educating students, we hope to create a safer environment for everyone on the road.'

Grab Malaysia bans Neta EVs over safety concerns after crash test fail
KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 — Grab Malaysia has recently added Neta models to its Rejected Car Models list. The Chinese EV maker has released two models in Malaysia so far, including Neta V and Neta X. In general, Grab Malaysia accepts all car models under 14 years old for the use of its e-hailing service, while pick-up trucks are also accepted in East Malaysia. However, there are certain models that the company will not accept at all, and these models fall under the Rejected Car Models list. Banned due to safety concerns We have since confirmed the addition of Neta models to the list. Here's a statement that the company has sent to in regard to why the company decided to ban EVs from Neta: 'The decision was made based on safety considerations, as Neta models received zero stars in the Asean NCAP crash test. While previous APAD guidelines required vehicles to achieve a minimum of three stars in the Asean NCAP crash test, this requirement has been removed in the latest guidelines. However, Grab has made a business decision to uphold this standard to ensure the safety of our passengers and driver-partners. Grab remains committed to maintaining high safety standards for all vehicles used on our platform, as part of our ongoing efforts to provide a safe and reliable service for everyone.' — Grab Malaysia While Grab Malaysia did not reveal when exactly the company added Neta models to its Rejected Car Models list, we believe the addition was fairly recent. According to the last archived data on 22 May 2025 by the Internet Wayback Machine, Neta's name was not yet listed. There are only a handful of Neta EVs on our roads According to JPJ's registration data, 298 units of Neta V have been registered with the department up until 31 May 2025. As for Neta X, 59 units have been registered with JPJ within the same period. Neta V was first introduced in our market during the Malaysia Autoshow 2023. However, the car was only officially launched a few months later with a price tag of RM100,000. At Malaysia Autoshow 2024, the distributor of Neta in Malaysia, Intro Synergy, previewed the Neta X in our market for the first time. The electric SUV was then officially launched in July that year with a starting price of RM119,888. At the moment, Neta's future in Malaysia seemed rather uncertain. In early June, Intro Synergy announced that it would be going through a restructuring process. Despite that, the company assures that all service centres will continue to be operational and all warranties will continue to be honoured. In the same announcement, Intro Synergy also said that it is planning to switch to the direct-to-consumer business model. Several days later, it was then revealed that Hozon Auto, which is the company behind Neta, has begun the bankruptcy restructuring process. It is not yet known how long this process will take, but Hozon Auto is confident enough that it will be able to recover and has already been aiming to launch three global models by 2027. — SoyaCincau

Proton, Grab Malaysia expand partnership with more car models and e-hailing perks
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd and Grab Malaysia have expanded their partnership to offer more car models, including the Proton S70 and X-Series, with added benefits for Grab drivers. In a statement, Proton said the partnership builds on the success of the 'Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners' campaign launched in November 2024, which has so far generated 220 leads and resulted in 148 Proton Saga registrations. The continued collaboration underscores the strong demand for Proton's models in the e-hailing segment and reinforces the shared goal of modernising Malaysia's ride-hailing with affordable and reliable cars. Driver-partners can now choose from a wider range of Proton models, including GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) options. The partnership also offers up to RM13,000 in cash rebates, a 5% service discount for two years or 40,000 km, and RM500 in fuel support to ease initial ownership costs. 'Our strengthened partnership with Grab Malaysia marks a crucial step in empowering the e-hailing sector. Proton is thrilled to make our S70 and premium X-series models more accessible to Grab drivers. 'For gig workers, this comprehensive programme extends beyond exclusive benefits to assurance of driving Proton cars. Its reliability and affordable maintenance costs are important factors for those who use cars as their primary working tools,' Proton Edar deputy director sales, Ong Chee Wooi said. Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia's director of country operations and mobility, Rashid Shukor, said this collaboration made it easier for its driver-partners to access vehicles, enabling them to earn and support their families while meeting the growing demand for rides. 'With the expansion of our partnership – now extending to the S70 and premium X-series models —drivers now have the chance to elevate their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and cater to an even broader consumer base. We look forward to continuing this journey together to build a future where opportunities are accessible to all."
