Wild One: Hannie Day – Lucy In London
Friendship, forlorness, and the independent spirit embrace each other in Hannie Day's heartfelt new video for 'Lucy In London', achieving Wild One status this week with it's refined camcorder aesthetic and charming DIY ingenuity.
Directed by Grace Pink, the music video was shot on a shoestring budget with the help of friends (including the famous Lucy herself!) and some of Grace's fellow RMIT media studies peers. 'I think we were all a little surprised at how profesh the whole thing turned out!' says Hannie. 'None of us were experts really so the process was kind of chaos. We shot a lot of it in an empty apartment four floors above Lucy's place so there was lots of squishing into the elevator with lamps and cameras and mirrors.'
'Although the day of the shoot was a bit of an unprepared mess, the editing process was super meticulous' says Grace. 'I spent weeks making drafts and sending different versions back and forth to Hannie. At this point I've listened to this song more times than I can count!'
Shot on several different camera formats, including some vintage digital video, 'Lucy In London' is filled with a variety of offbeat vignettes. 'With the project I really just wanted to make something fun and almost a bit weird, with lots of cuts to B-roll and quirky transitions' explains Grace. 'We really didn't plan on using the camcorder much but it added such a lovely nostalgic tone to the video and was perfect for getting candid shots of us all hanging out - which I think adds to the ambience of genuine friendship that you can feel throughout the video!'
'...it felt ecstatic watching the video back for the first time, realising we had made something truly impressive and beautiful together' recalls Hannie. 'At one point I tried to make the crew some lunch downstairs and forgot about it, only to return to completely inedible spaghetti. But honestly I think that is what made it so much fun. We were all fumbling through this process together.'
